Episode #92: Thank You Cos!

The holidays are here and we thought it’s a perfect time to thank one of the nicest and most inspiring brewers in San Diego, Cosimo Sorrentino.  For those who did not hear he is leaving Monkey Paw Brewing and South Park Brew Co.  He has done what he wanted to for San Diego beer and wants to find a new city to go to and foster its beer culture.  So we just wanted to do a show where we say Thank You and wish Cos good luck on his future endeavors.

We learn that Cos has brewed over 200 recipes since joining Monkey Paw.  Cos talks about what he has done and how Nick Norton and Scott Blair will take over the responsibility of the breweries.  Beagle asks Cos what his favorite beers were to make and drink.  Since Cos will be here until February or so, he has some collaborations coming up.  There is a dinner at O’Brien’s Pub on January 22 and he will be brewing with Tom Nickel.  Next up is most on why Cos is leaving San Diego and what he thinks of the status of the industry is here.

We take a short break to eat some food and come back and talk “hazy” and “juicy” IPAs.  After opening some Societe beer, Cos talks about how he uses them as an example for anyone wanting to start their own brewery.  We also get into the differences in different types of sour beers.  That runs into a talk about how Societe treats their beers and how we go to places with good lines. It’s not guaranteed that the “craft beer bar” you go to actually cleans their lines regularly.  Eventually we are also joined by Jocobo Mendoza and Bill Batten as well.

In The News!

  • On December 1st, Barrio Logan brewery Border X was named the $5000 winner of the Startup Brewery Challenge. The biannual competition is staged by national craft beer website Brewbound.com and Craft Brew Alliance. The competition took place at Mission Bay’s Paradise Point resort during a Brewbound Session. Favela says the cash prize will roll into the brewery’s operating expenses, which includes next month’s upgrade from a three- to ten-barrel brewhouse. The brewery is also investing in bottling runs.  More on the story here.
  • ‘Bad Beer’ Battle Threatens to Pull Apart Boston’s Biggest Craft Brew Chain – Beginning Jan. 1, Craft Beer Cellars (Boston, MA) is being more proactive about defining the brands of beer allowed on their shelves. And the brands of beer that are not. Some CBC franchisees are not happy. There are 28 stores across 13 states in the CBC chain, and 11 more planned. A handful of franchise owners have said they plan to take action to protect their collective interests.  More on the story here.
  • The beer festival scene in San Diego – San Diego Beer Plexus had a lengthy conversation about how the scene has changed.  Both a brewer/owner and a festival organizer weighed in on the topic.  Two main topics, should a brewery donate or sell the beer to a festival AND can a festival make a profit while still donating some proceeds to charity?
