It’s San Diego Beer Week and we have a special treat for you, a second episode this week! We are joined by Jill Davidson, she is the Western Regional Sales Manager of Pizza Port and the Interim President of the San Diego Brewers Guild. We waste no time in getting into it this week when we crack open a can of Ponto SIPA to begin the show. Be sure to find all your San Diego Beer Week events here and plan your 10 days of awesomeness.
Like I said above, we do not hesitate to start the show and right away we start talking about how beers in San Diego are generally more expensive than in other parts of the country. That leads to location, location, location…and Pizza Port has some of the best locations around the county. We learn that Bressi Ranch is more than just their newest location, it handles a lot of production of their beer and their pizza dough. Eventually we get to a real question and ask Jill what the San Diego Brewers Guild does as it pertains the the Brewers Association definition of a craft brewery. Being a theme of this show, we trail off onto some more tangents talking about New Jersey and a few other topics. Almost on queue I spill a beer while pouring it so I leave to get some towels. This allows Brian to ask Jill more about the current job layoffs at Stone. There seems to have been a major fact that was left out of most media outlets when talking about this issue. Changing topics I bring up a concern about newer breweries expanding too fast and Jill gives her educated opinion on tasting rooms versus outside distribution. Brian asks Jill more about a brewery that has been expanding extremely fast, Modern Times.
We take a short break and come back to ask Jill about how important having knowledgeable staff at a craft beer bar, pub, or brewery. Jill allows us to segue into a question many people have, what is the difference between Pizza Port and Port Brewing. The conversation goes into talking about a few alumni that have made their way out of Pizza Port and gone onto big things. After opening up the Bine & Vine 5th Anniversary beer from El Segundo Brewing, we give Geoi some love. Trying to move the conversation back to Jill, I ask her about the challenges of opening a brewery in San Diego. I ask one last question about if a new brewery has to join the Guild and can you join while not having a brewery.

In The News!
- “Dr.” Bill Sysak just announced his intention to open Wild Barrel Brewing Company in San Marcos in Spring 2017. He has been working on this new project “over the last couple of years.” A lot more details are found here on this San Diego Union Tribune article.
- Barrel Harbor to open 2nd location in Miramar centered around gaming: Located at 8990 Miramar Road, the tasting room is in the center-interior of a commercial center with direct access to Beeramar’s main artery. The space is 6,600-square-feet on the inside, 900 square feet of which is devoted to a rentable, private mezzanine. The public-area is furnished with 15 custom-built tables that are designed specifically for table-top gaming, a unique angle that hasn’t yet been explored by local brewing companies. Looking to open sometime in November. More on this over at West Coaster.
- EPPIG Brewing is currently in soft opening and will be open on November 2nd.
