Episode #128: Thr3e Punk Ales

(NSFW)

Even though our guest this show has been on the show twice before, this is the first time we’ve interviewed them at their brewery.  That’s right, Thr3e Punk Ales is finally open!  After a few years of contract brewing with Finest Made Ales (formerly Butcher’s Brewing) and delays from the city and other organizations like ABC and TTB, you can finally buy a pint.  Go find them down on Third Ave. in Downtown Chula Vista.

Interview

We are joined by Steve Garcia, Kevin Lewis, and Ivan Moldanado.  Since our friends over at Three B Zine did an interview with them already, we wanted to go another route.  We do ask a few questions just to break the ice.  After the questions, we get into a few games we have and the news.  We start the show with wondering how they are punk.  Since that seemed to not go anywhere, the actual first question is how they got into brewing and craft beer.  Brian ordered us some pizza from La Bella Pizza, so we take a quick break to eat.  After the break, we ask if they thought about any other location than Chula Vista.

Games!

Brian’s game:  Answer in Rhyme, answer the question by using rhymes.

  • This is the fastest craft brewery packaging.
  • This is the brewery that purchased Alpine.
  • This brewery is on Morena Blvd., near Costco, and features a giant, lighted, bright orange sign.
  • We did a lot more with the money than just flying an airplane about this brewery.
  • The brewery recently released the official beer of San Diego.

Episode #127: Birthday Princess (San Diego Bacon Fest 2017)

(NSFW)

It’s that time of the year again, San Diego Bacon Fest is upon us!  We are back at the festival, recording LIVE!  You get all the usual live shenanigans during this recording, high fives, surprise people on the mic, and random segues.  Luckily though, we have some great interviews with a few breweries and drink some really cool beers.  We start the show with the news.

After the news, we come back with a random interview.  Jeff from Brass Shots comes on and shows us his products.  While not made from actually used ammo, these shot glasses are machined to look like the casings for .45 ACP rounds.  After another break, we get into our brewery interviews.  We are joined by Dylan Brown and Dan Hacker from Alpine Beer Co., Brian Mitchell from Pariah Brewing, and super fan Matthew Garcia, aka therealmatatat in social media.  We ask about what’s up with Alpine and their Brewpub, ask what’s new at Pariah, and wonder why Matt is always in San Diego.

The next interview is Corey Esoldi from Bitter Brothers Brewery.  We wonder how their relationship is with Stone Distributing Co. as well as what events are coming up.  Bitter Brothers just started canning their beers, so we ask what is currently being canned.  During the interview, a few lively women showed up to give their opinion of Bacon Fest.  We are also joined by the Birthday Princess, it’s a guy.  We let him on to talk about Bacon Fest too.  Eventually, we are also joined by Travis Hudson who shows up a little late to the festival.  Travis breaks some new news that we did not know about.  Ballast Point is changing their packaging.  We do finally end the interview with Corey while we talk about the price of hops, the price of pints, and why we don’t see hop experimental numbers anymore.  We have one last break and close out the show.

In the News!

  • Modern Times is opening a brewery and tasting room in Portland, Oregon.  While it is exciting for MT to open this new location a few years earlier than expected, it is because The Commons Brewery will be leaving this location and may (or may not) remain brewing.  More information can be found in this article.
  • Derek Gallanosa, currently at Abnormal Beer Co. will be leaving Abnormal and starting a new brewery in Northern California.  We hate to lose him and his creativity, but he will be training his replacement.  More information can be found here and here.
  • Nick Ceniceros is no longer with 32 North Brewing.  We do not know what is next for him, but we are sure he will do good things.  No news article about it, just social media.

Episode #126: Green Flash Treasure Chest Brewers’ Q&A

(NSFW)

Our normal show did not happen due to some last minute scheduling changes.  Also, Greg flew to St. Louis for five days for a little R&R and to start the new St. Louis BeerTalk Radio.  More news on that in a few weeks.  This week we have the Brewers’ Q&A session that was held at the Green Flash Treasure Chest Festival.  Brian was the moderator and is joined (from right to left in the photo) Kevin Barnes, Head Brewer at Green Flash, Erik Jensen, Brewmaster at Green Flash, and Pat Korn, Barrelmaster of Cellar 3.  Beagle asked these three brewers what it is like working for Green Flash and what it’s like during a typical day.  We also learn about how the beer gets from Mira Mesa to Poway.  At the end, a few audience members get to ask questions.

Episode #125: Barons Market

(NSFW)

Our first grocery store is our focus on this week’s show.  We are joined by Jeff Slankard, the Beer and Wine Director, and Rachel Shemirani, the Vice President of Marketing of Barons Market.  Barons is a smaller grocery store that focuses on organic food and over the years has made it a mission to have available to their customers some of the best craft beer they can.  You’ll hear that they do have the “crafty” brands, but we hope to change their mind and switch to real craft beer.

Interview

We wonder, per usual, what is Jeff’s introduction into craft beer.  Since Jeff has been a beer buyer for 30 years, we ask how the trends in beer buying have changed in the last 20 years.  Rachel also chimes in and talks about what she has seen since she has been working there.  We go through the years before Stone and after Stone.  We tackle the shelf space issue, especially now that there are so many breweries wanting to be on the shelf.  From there the conversation moves into how cans are playing a role as compared to the good ol’ bomber.  Next up is the talk about independent beer and if they are seeing any feedback from their customers.

After a break, we come back and wonder what it takes for a brewery to get into Barons.  That moves into a conversation about label art and what they think works and does not work.  I wonder what do they think is off-putting when a sales person comes in.  We then get into who they carry and what seems to sell the best.  After a short conversation about the #SummerVibes Mosaic Unfiltered IPL, we get back to the guests (again) and ask how they are different from other grocery stores in regards to their beer selection.  We talk a little about their favorite beers to drink and finalize the show up with their beer and food pairings at ALL of their stores.

In the News!

  • New Brewery Alert! Circle 9 Brewing is officially open. 7292 Opportunity Rd. Ste. C, roughly 1 mile from Societe or Council.
  • Iron Fist Brewing hires former Offbeat Brewing owner Tom Garcia.  He will be brewing production manager at Vista.

Episode #124: Green Flash, Cellar 3, & Treasure Chest Festival

(NSFW)

We are back at Green Flash!  In Episode 41, we recorded at Cellar 3, this time we are at Green Flash’s Miramar location up in their conference room upstairs.  We are joined by Erik Jensen, the Brewmaster, and Dave Adams, the Director of Beer Education.  Please enjoy this show with one of San Diego’s oldest breweries.

Interview

Since this is the first time we’ve had Erik on the show, we do wonder what his introduction into craft beer was.  Dave chimes in as well but Erik takes this question away with a few stories he has from the past.  Eventually, we get to our second question and wonder what differentiates them from other breweries in Miramar.  Part of the conversation goes into “Best By” dates and having shelf stable beers, which means they do not care for hazy beers as much as other breweries do.  After talking about things like dissolved oxygen in beer, we take a break.

After the break, we come back with some rapid fire questions to speed things up.  Then we get into the Treasure Chest Festival and the homebrewing contest that will be part of the festival.  We open a four-month old beer from Green Flash and Dave goes back to the reasoning that controlling the D.O. in their beers is very important and how it is hard to tell the public that age is not the only factor when buying an IPA.  We go to wonder what the hardest beer is to make.  Then we spend some time on the IBU talk and how it really isn’t a good measurement for ordering a beer.

In the News!
