Episode #13: West Coaster Magazine, Part 2

West Coaster Magazine

(NSFW)

San Diego craft beer is not just about the breweries.  I interview Mike Shess from the West Coaster Magazine, who with his partner Ryan Lamb, single-handedly created the first magazine focusing solely on the craft beer scene in San Diego.  This 3-hour interview has been split into two parts so save your sanity.

Interview:

Even though we talked for 3 hours, we could have kept going for another two.  Lucky for you we decided to stop.  In part 2 we talk about some of the South Bay and Tijuana breweries.  We discuss the fact there is now over $600 million of economic impact to San Diego from the brewing industry.  This brings up the common question of will the “bubble” burst?  We talk about our best new breweries and I try to get Mike to tell me his worst breweries, but I end up calling out a certain brewery with no current home.  Is San Diego the best beer city?  Some Top 10 list says Yes and some say No.  Who the fuck cares???  I review the Reader On Tap festival and talk about the upcoming beer fests, Mission Valley Craft Beer & Food Festival and CityBeat Festival of Beers.  For some reason we talk about the artwork in the room where we record.  And finally, yes finally, we talk about what excites Mike and what get’s him out of bed.  Thank you so much for listening and please take Mike up on his offer, email him and mention the show, he will give you a treat.

You will hear the next part next week.

Interview:

Even though we talked for 3 hours, we could have kept going for another two.  Mike loves to talk beer and with the help of a few members from the San Diego Craft Brew Society, we talked about many interesting things.  We talk about the beginnings of the West Coaster and the beginnings of a few new breweries in San Diego.  The West Coaster has a list of breweries and we discuss about the 100th brewery in San Diego and why some don’t like the answer.  Mike talks about beer in media and how San Diego needs to do a better job of covering the craft.  Would the West Coaster sell out to a big magazine corporation like Conde Nast?  Best taco shop in San Diego?  And what the heck is “Dude, Where’s My Phone?”  Find out in part one of Episode 13.

Episode #12: Kings of the Craft

KingsoftheCraft

(NSFW)

Episode 12 is a little different from other episodes, we interview Eduardo Castro Fonseca and Steven Moyer from Kings of the Craft.  Kings of the Craft is a documentary that is going to air on KPBS starting on May 21st.

Interview:

We talk about the documentary and how it has come together, who is on the show, and how it grew from a school project to full fledged documentary.  We also talk about the KickStarter campaign that will start March 1st to help fund some of the work that has already been done on the show and the possibility of a second season.  At least one of the rewards for pledging on KickStarter will be Bullets2Bandages, a .50 caliber bullet that is turned into a bottle opener.  We also happen to talk about San Diego and how it has become THE best place for craft beer.  And that damn Super Bowl commercial comes back to life too, Eduardo and Steven talk about what they thought of the ad and if it was a good thing for craft beer or not.

Episode #11: Twisted Manzanita Ales & Spirits, Part 2

TwistedManzanitapodcast2

(NSFW)

Part two of our wonderful episode with Twisted Manzanita Ales & Spirits.  Greg interviews Nina Izadi, Daniel Cady, and Jake Pitman.  Daniel is the head brewer of Twisted Manzanita Ales, Jake is the head distiller of Twisted Manzanita Spirits, and Nina is in charge of marketing and well, she knows a lot about beer.

Interview:

Part two we talk about the collaboration of Alesmith and Mikkeller.  Alesmith is moving out of their current location into a bigger one and decided to sell the current location to Mikkeller.  But not only are they transferring the lease over, they “might” be helping Mikkellar brew beer at that location.  We also chat about how Twisted Manzanita uses barrels and regenerates them for new projects.

Bonus content!  We have a drink-off between Ballast Point’s Sculpin and Big Eye IPA.  Our friends at The Perfect Pour podcast made an very strong statement that no one likes Big Eye and that Ballast Point should just stop producing it.  So we decided to drink them side-by-side and see who the real winner is.  Some of us were surprised by the outcome.

Episode #11: Twisted Manzanita Ales & Spirits, Part 1

Beer and Spirits!

Beer and Spirits!

(NSFW)

We did it again, a very long (but informative) podcast.  After editing the show as one file, my audio program told me there is no way it could process the files properly.  Well, the answer was simple, let’s do a two-part show again.

Interview:

In part one we talk about how Twisted Manzanita got to this point and how Jake and Daniel became a part of Manzanita / Twisted Manzanita.  Of course we drink some current and new beers from Twisted Manzanita’s portfolio as well as a Rye Whiskey from Twisted Manzanita Spirits.  We get a few exclusives like the release dates of new beer and their plans for their fifth anniversary party.  We keep talking, so please stay tuned to part 2.
