Episode #23: Duck Foot Brewing Co.

Quack!  Quack!  Just a bunch of drunk birds in this episode. Okay, we’re not dunk, just a little tipsy.  We interview Duck Foot Brewing Co. in episode 23.

Interview:

While Duck Foot is starting to be known as the San Diego “gluten-free” brewery, that is not exactly true.  We interview owner Matt DelVecchio, owner Brett Goldstock, and head brewer Derek Wasak.  The team explains what “gluten-reduced” beers are and why the are being brewed at Duck Foot.  We talk a little about how two guys from New York and one guy from Boston can somehow work in the same business and not kill each other.  My opinion is that now they are all living in San Diego and this city is rubbing off on them.  We ask why did they open a brewery in the crowded Beeramar area of San Diego.  Derek talks about brewing in a time where you may not be able to get hops and grains that you want as a new brewery.  And we were surprised how fast Duck Foot went from opening to distribution in such a short time.

This episode was a fun one!  Fresh off our interview with Brian Beagle of Sore Eye Sports, our new co-host helps with this big interview.  Brian and Greg interview one of San Diego’s (and possibly the worlds) biggest and most successful homebrew clubs, QUAFF.

Interview:

We interview the current President of QUAFF, Larry Stein.  Larry is not only in charge of QUAFF but also owns two restaurants in San Diego, The Ugly Dog Pub near San Diego State and Steins Neighborhood Pub in Tierrasanta.  We talk to Larry about the history of QUAFF and some of the success the club and its Alumni have had.  You might be surprised which professional brewers in San Diego and outside San Diego were/are QUAFF members.  We also have the pleasure of talking with Kelsey McNair of QUAFF and the future North Park Beer Co.  Kelsey is an award-winning homebrewer and will soon open up NP Beer Co in 2016.  But we are not done there, we also have Loren Miraglia of QUAFF and the National Homebrewers Conference.

Events Coming Up:

This episode was recorded at The Ugly Dog Pub.

Episode 21 is not to be missed!  We reveal not one, but TWO major announcements regarding San Diego BeerTalk Radio’s future.  We interview Brian Beagle from Sore Eye Sports, he might have something to do with at least one of these announcements.

Interview:

Brian talks about his involvement in Sore Eye Spots and the Sore Eye Cup Awards.  Please vote for your favorite, regularly-brewed San Diego craft beer!  We talk about Brian’s history including his homebrewing passion and drink one of his award-winning homebrewed beers, Chinout Stout.  We also chat about the San Diego International Beer Festival at the Del Mar Fair and the 44 medals San Diego Breweries won.  AleSmith won 2015 Champion Brewery for winning four gold medals.  We just happen to have the Hall of Fame Imperial .394 Pale Ale from Alesmith too.  RIP Tony Gwynn!  There are now 109 breweries in San Diego and unfortunately Stone South Park closes its doors.  There’s also plenty of craft beer talk between the two of us.  And of course the two big announcements, listen all the way until the end!

This episode was recorded at the great 57 Degrees Wine & Craft Beer Bar!

Episode #20: Kilowatt Brewing

This week talk to an electrifying brewery, Kilowatt Brewing.  We interviewed Head Brewer and Co-Owner Chris Calva and Co-Owner Steve Kozyk.

Interview:

Yes, Kilowatt Brewing has a bar that has a colorful display under it and plays videos for a cool, colorful effect.  We talk about the creation of Kilowatt Brewing, originally named Illumination Brewing.  Kilowatt originally was going to open up in the Inland Empire area of California until the lease fell through.  With connections in San Diego, Kilowatt ended up in Kearny Mesa.  In the show they discuss their brewing philosophy and how they decide to survive in a city with 107 breweries.

Part of their brewing process is brewing “gluten reduced” beers.  Also, some of their beers are blended, two types of beers put together for a different beer experience.  Speaking of brewing, Kilowatt is a nano-brewery and Steve is planning with fellow nano-brewer Alex from Intergalactic to create a San Diego nano-brewery association.  And of course we talk about hops, the hop shortage, and hop contracts.

Episode #19: The Brew Project

TheBrewProject

(NSFW)

We are back after a short vacation.  We interview Beau Schmitt from The Brew Project (formally San Diego Brew Project.)  My co-hosts for this episode are Jim Crute (Lightning Brewery) and John Gio (craft beer aficionado).

Interview:

We discuss The Brew Project and its roots.  Where it started and where it’s going.  We sat down at the Quad Alehouse for a short and sweet show.  We talk about the Quad Alehouse and how that came about as well as the new and upcoming The Brew Project [House], a bar and restaurant with an all San Diego tap list.  That’s right, no Temecula, no San Clemente, no Orange County.  Beau talks about his gateways beers and his love for everything San Diego craft beer.

As for current events, we’d like to congratulate a few San Diego BeerTalk guests.  Kings of the Craft has successfully released two episodes of their six-episode documentary about San Diego craft beer.  Also, Reckless Brewing has opened their doors and I might have had too much fun on opening night.  We also discuss some of the awesome sour beers now flowing at Cellar 3 from Green Flash Brewing.  And last but not least we talk about the three week mayhem that will be Societe 3, their 3rd Anniversary party.  From June 12th to July 3rd, there will be events and special beer deals going on.  You can buy their 3rd Anniversary glass for more deals and bring your 1st and 2nd Anniversary glasses for some even better deals.  All we can say is, “Wow!”
