“We are family!”  Well, that’s the feel of our next interview, Iron Fist Brewing Co.  This brewery is owned by Greg and Eve Sieminski and their son Brandon is the head brewer.  We talk with Eve and Brandon this episode.

The Interview:

Eve and Brandon talk about the history of not just the brewery but also Vista as it was back then.  Indie Beer was quite different five years ago.  One big thing about Iron Fist is that it is a family business to its core.  While the brewery is family-owned, the employees feel very much like family as well.  We delve into their brewing system at Vista and their custom bottling line.  They also talk about opening in Barrio Logan and how it was not originally agreed upon as a viable spot.  Brandon talks more about his love for brewing and how he started when he was 18.  The big thing, as we’ve heard about from other brewers, is that cleaning your equipment is one of the biggest things you can do to be consistent.

We take a small break and come back talking about their types of beers.  One of their beers is one you do not see a lot of in San Diego, their Spice of Life, a Bière de Garde.  Moving on, we talk about customer service and customer feedback and what Iron Fist does with that feedback.  Brandon talks more about how their carbonate and filter their bottles and kegs.  We end with talking more about their involvement with homebrewer Ken Schmidt.

Pure Project is a little different from most breweries in San Diego.  They joined up with The Brewery Igniter program from H.G. Fenton.  In short The Brewery Igniter allows breweries to start their business while not having to worry about finding a location or building out the “back of the house.”  The brewery is responsible for the “front of the house,” building out the tasting room and putting in the beer lines.  However this allows the brewery to start with a little less capital and starts with new equipment.

The Interview:

We sit down with the partner Jesse Pine, partner Mat Robar, and brewer Winslow Sawyer.  Jesse moved with his wife to Costa Rica and found that craft beer was not huge there.  They went to a beer festival and saw the need for craft breweries in Costa Rica.  However due to the amount of money it would take to import what’s needed to brew and the lack of a proper waste water plant, it was not going to happen.  They knew craft beer was big in San Diego and found out about The Brewery Igniter program and things just fell into place.  Jesse talks more on how the relationship between TBI and PP came to be.

We move onto Winslow and he talks about how he came to be a brewer.  Starting up in Santa Cruz after college he joined Boulder Creek Brewery as an assistant brewer but soon became the head brewer.  Unfortunately that brewery had a huge fire that left him out of work.  His job search ended up in San Diego where he met Jesse and Mat.  His degree is Sustainable Agriculture so we eventually get into how that ties into brewing and how this helps with Pure Projects’ goal of using sustainable resources, giving back to the community with their 1% program, and making sure nothing goes to waste.

We dive into “Beeramar” and what it is like opening a place in a heavy populated part of San Diego’s beer scene.  Winslow talks about their beers, Kolsch, Gose, Coffee Stout on Nitro, Session Rye, IPA, Imperial Baltic Porter, Saison, and some funky beer.

In The News!

Thorn St. Brewing is expanding!  They are opening up another location in Barrio Logan and will be brewing there.  This allows them to keep up with the demand of their beers.  Story by the West Coaster.

Bitter Bothers Brewing is in their soft opening period.  Visit them in Bay Park at 4170 Morena Blvd.

A brewery that almost no one knows existed is opening up a tasting room after brewing for three years.  Kensington Brewing Company will open on January 23rd.  Article by SD Reader.

Episode #45: Live at Alpine Beer Company Pub

We were very lucky and somehow we convinced Alpine to let us record LIVE at their new Pub.  We get to interview six different Alpine/Green Flash people.

The Show:

We start the show with two guys who have been on the show before.  Dave Adams from Green Flash and Bobby Mathews from Alpine Beer Co.  We talk about their jobs at their respected companies.  We do get into breweries buyouts and the usual back and forth opinions it.  Talking about buyouts, of course Green Flash bought Alpine and we discuss the Green Flash & Alpine bottle controversy?  We also talk all about the opinion that the Green Flash-brewed Alpine beer is “not as good” as the previously Alpine-brewed beer.  Speaking of Green Flash-beer, let’s talk about Jolly Folly.  Dave and Bobby talk about how Jolly Folly was made, you think you know how it happened.

Next we move on to some segments we haven’t talked about on the show.  We are then joined by Shawn McIlhenney and Scott Holst.  Shawn is the head brewer and Scott is the assistant brewer.  Shawn also happens to be the son of the founder, Pat McIlhenney.  We talk with them about how the purchase of Alpine to Green Flash and how the new Pub has changed the brewery and given it more space.  Since we have two brewers on the show we talk about the brewing process.  We ask why Alpine beers seem to have a focus on flavors of hops and not only bitterness.  They talk about their new single-hop beer, Singled Out.

We thought this show was a little bit of a guy’s show so we are joined next by the Chef at the Pub, Jamie Holst and the tasting room manager, Natalie Davis.  We talk about their jobs with Alpine.  Get ready to get hungry, cause we are going to talk a lot of about the food at the Pub.  We also talk about the renovated tasting room now that the Pub has moved.

AB-InBev buys more breweries.  In the last week AB-InBev has purchased: (Each link to a story)

Four Peaks Brewing (Tempe, AZ)

Camden Town Brewery (London, England)

Breckenridge Brewing (Littleton, CO)

But here is where this gets even more interesting.  AB-InBev reportedly is giving incentives and bonuses to distribution partners for carrying 98% AB-InBev products in their portfolio.  The Wall Street Journal (article for paid subscribers) has reported this information about the possible program that could pay out $150 million to distributors for mainly carrying their products.  This has pushed one #IndieBeer brand, Deschutes from Grey Eagle Distributing out of St. Louis, MO.  Free tail Brewing out of San Antonio, TX has a good article about the overall picture.

Another big brand, Constellation Brands was featured on Jim Cramer’s money show.  The CEO Rob Sands was interviewed by Cramer.  Sands can’t even name the IPA that sitting on the shelf behind him. I made a mistake, Sands did mention the name Sculpin.  Thanks William for the correction.  Plus Cramer is basically throwing him softball questions the entire time.  If you want to see the video, here you go.

In good news plenty of breweries are opening and/or expanding.

We are joined this week with some SD BeerTalk alumni and beer friends.  Mike Shess from West Coaster and Derek Gallanosa from Abnormal Beer Co. and The Cork & Craft.

The Show:

We have our first show recorded from The Brew Project in Hillcrest.  Our main topic for this show is the West Coaster’s 15 in ’15, Best of SD Beer 2015.  We start though with talking about Derek and Abnormal Beer Co.  We just learned of their $1 Million expansion plans a few weeks ago, Derek delves into it a little more.  We also talk about Mike’s role in West Coaster and then eventually start talking about the Best 15 in ’15.  It helps that Abnormal was one of the winners.  Both guys are super knowledgable about #SDBeer and we just let them take the reins and talk while we power through this list.
