Episode #19: The Brew Project

TheBrewProject

(NSFW)

We are back after a short vacation.  We interview Beau Schmitt from The Brew Project (formally San Diego Brew Project.)  My co-hosts for this episode are Jim Crute (Lightning Brewery) and John Gio (craft beer aficionado).

Interview:

We discuss The Brew Project and its roots.  Where it started and where it’s going.  We sat down at the Quad Alehouse for a short and sweet show.  We talk about the Quad Alehouse and how that came about as well as the new and upcoming The Brew Project [House], a bar and restaurant with an all San Diego tap list.  That’s right, no Temecula, no San Clemente, no Orange County.  Beau talks about his gateways beers and his love for everything San Diego craft beer.

As for current events, we’d like to congratulate a few San Diego BeerTalk guests.  Kings of the Craft has successfully released two episodes of their six-episode documentary about San Diego craft beer.  Also, Reckless Brewing has opened their doors and I might have had too much fun on opening night.  We also discuss some of the awesome sour beers now flowing at Cellar 3 from Green Flash Brewing.  And last but not least we talk about the three week mayhem that will be Societe 3, their 3rd Anniversary party.  From June 12th to July 3rd, there will be events and special beer deals going on.  You can buy their 3rd Anniversary glass for more deals and bring your 1st and 2nd Anniversary glasses for some even better deals.  All we can say is, “Wow!”

Episode #18: Dos Desperados Brewery

Happy Cinco de Mayo!  We talk to Steve from Dos Desperados in San Marcos.

Interview:

We talk to Steve about the brewery and its start.  Some leave their jobs to start a brewery, Steve waiting until he retired.  He also had some help from his wife Dora to push him out the door and find a hobby.  Luckily it seem his hobby is paying off, at least he is out of the house.  This family brewery is proof that all it takes is love, time, and maybe some luck.

We ask what is it like to have a brewery in North County?  Should North County do more to advertise for its breweries?  Do you brew what you love or what people want you to brew?  Can you make a drinkable beer with Habanero peppers?

Happy First Anniversary to Dos Desperados!

Episode #17: Coaster Bar & Grill

Dive bar?  Craft beer bar?  Or Both?  We talk with Darren Renna from the Coaster Bar and Grill in Mission Beach.  You can find Coaster Bar & Grill at 744 Ventura Place, San Diego, CA 92109.

Interview:

Daren talks about the history of the Coaster Bar and Grill (aka Coaster Saloon).  We talk about how the bar went from 10 taps to 20 taps to 32 taps to 52 taps currently.  Is it hard to fill 52 taps with good craft beer, or are breweries begging to be included on the list?  We talk about the fire and rebuilding the Coaster and how Darren’s family played an important role in not only rebuilding the Coaster Bar & Grill, but also the Coaster roller coaster and Belmont Park.  Is being by the beach a good thing or bad thing when it comes to craft beer and are bigger, newer bars that have opened up recently hurting business for the Coaster?  As usual, we ask Darren where he got his craft beer love and what was his gateway beer.

Episode #16: Banger Brewing & EC Craft Beer Invitational

BangerBrewing

(NSFW)

This week San Diego BeerTalk Radio turned into Las Vegas BeerTalk Radio.  I was in Las Vegas for a conference all week so I decided to reach out to a few breweries.  One of them had the time to talk to us.  Banger Brewing is a fairly new brewery in Las Vegas, about 1.5 years old.  They are in the heart of Old Las Vegas on Fremont Street.

Interview:

We talk with Eddie Quiogue one of the co-founders of Banger Brewing.  We talk about the start of the brewery and how five guys who knew each other making beer in their garage decided to open a brewery.  We discuss the Las Vegas craft beer scene and how Banger Brewing was accepted into the culture of craft beer and the culture of the Vegas scene.  Eddie talks about their beers and how they produce beers with many different flavors and using fresh ingredients.  We talk about Fremont Street and its history and how a craft brewery can fit into an alcohol-soaked, costume-wearing, mass market area like Fremont Street.  It’s very interesting to see the perspective of a brewery that is not in San Diego.

Bonus Content:

I have included nine “man on the street” interviews from the EC Craft Beer Invitational.  This is a festival we went to on March 15th that took place in El Cajon.  We have been struggling on whether or not to release these interviews.  The audio is listenable, however the wind was blowing very strong that day and in some of the interviews it is hard to hear the people.  We have decided to release the interviews on the back end of this episode so that you can turn off the podcast if you do not want to listen to it.

The nine people I interviewed are:

Robert Esparza, Mission Valley Craft Beer & Food Festival and San Diego Bacon Fest

Dave Gostenhofer, Shirts on Tap

Cosimo Sorrentino, Monkey Paw Brewing and South Park Brewing

Hollaine Hopkins, The Lupus Foundation of Southern California

David Crane, Doggie Beer Bones

Tyler Carter, San Diego Brewing Co (Tyler is now with Council Brewing)

Steve Farguson, Absolution Brewing Co  (Also have some help in this interview from some festival fans!)

Amanda Mitchell, Craft beer fan and festival goer

Bill Newton, SanTan Brewing

Episode #15: Intergalactic Brewing

IntergalacticBrewing

(NSFW)

We are back to interviewing some brewers.  We talk to Alex Van Horne and Jake Collins from Intergalactic Brewing.  We talk about where they came from, how it was opening a brewery with very little money, and about their 2nd Anniversary party.

NOTE:  The first four minutes of the podcast had some audio issues.  That was fixed during the podcast, I apologize to your ears.

Interview:

We talk to Alex and Jake about how they got to where they are today.  Alex talks about finding a place for the brewery and going through all the permits and paperwork that is involved in opening the brewery.  Starting the brewery with only $25,000 is possible, if maybe highly unlikely.  Jake talks about his roots and how he fell into this band of geeky brewers.  Alex might be young, but we get into many topics that many seasoned business owners have a hard time explaining.  We talk about growing as brewery, making sure your customers are happy, and increasing your production and the downsides of trying to grow too fast.  We talk about trademarks and how Intergalactic actually does not have the trademark for their name.  That also moved into the conversation about Samuel Adams v. Fezziwig’s (Arcana Brewing) and  Bells v. Innovation Brewing.  Alex and Jake talk about the the Brewers Association and the rankings of our breweries in San Diego.  Is being in San Diego a bad thing for your taste buds, do IPAs from other states taste bad or is it just that we are used to super-hopped beers?  Also talk abut Rye beers and some crazy dry-hopping.  And of course we talk about brewing beers and different flavors and procedures.  Alex and Jake are not only geeks and nerds about Sci-Fi, but also brewing.  If you are a beer geek, you will love this episode.
