Episode #11: Twisted Manzanita Ales & Spirits, Part 2

TwistedManzanitapodcast2

(NSFW)

Part two of our wonderful episode with Twisted Manzanita Ales & Spirits.  Greg interviews Nina Izadi, Daniel Cady, and Jake Pitman.  Daniel is the head brewer of Twisted Manzanita Ales, Jake is the head distiller of Twisted Manzanita Spirits, and Nina is in charge of marketing and well, she knows a lot about beer.

Interview:

Part two we talk about the collaboration of Alesmith and Mikkeller.  Alesmith is moving out of their current location into a bigger one and decided to sell the current location to Mikkeller.  But not only are they transferring the lease over, they “might” be helping Mikkellar brew beer at that location.  We also chat about how Twisted Manzanita uses barrels and regenerates them for new projects.

Bonus content!  We have a drink-off between Ballast Point’s Sculpin and Big Eye IPA.  Our friends at The Perfect Pour podcast made an very strong statement that no one likes Big Eye and that Ballast Point should just stop producing it.  So we decided to drink them side-by-side and see who the real winner is.  Some of us were surprised by the outcome.

Episode #11: Twisted Manzanita Ales & Spirits, Part 1

Beer and Spirits!

Beer and Spirits!

We did it again, a very long (but informative) podcast.  After editing the show as one file, my audio program told me there is no way it could process the files properly.  Well, the answer was simple, let’s do a two-part show again.

Interview:

In part one we talk about how Twisted Manzanita got to this point and how Jake and Daniel became a part of Manzanita / Twisted Manzanita.  Of course we drink some current and new beers from Twisted Manzanita’s portfolio as well as a Rye Whiskey from Twisted Manzanita Spirits.  We get a few exclusives like the release dates of new beer and their plans for their fifth anniversary party.  We keep talking, so please stay tuned to part 2.

Episode #10: Lightning Brewery, Part 2

Lightning Brewery

(NSFW)

Part two of our interview with Jim Crute from Lightning Brewery.  To help with the interview, I am joined by Hooker and Brian Beagle from Sore Eye Sports.  We get into a good discussion about a certain Macro brewery and their Super Bowl commercial.

Interview:

Jim has been in the biochemistry field for a while and decided one day to give all that up and start a brewery.  His passion is clean, solid beers usually German in style.  His background gives him a different perspective on brewing beer.  Jim is very knowledgable in brewing and very knowledgeable about the business of beer.  You can hear that when we talk about different styles of beer and how what Lightning does is different from other breweries.  We talk not only about that Super Bowl commercial, but also about safety while brewing.  We mention that Home Brewing Co. is now open.  Also please check out Lightning Brewing in Poway.

Episode #10: Lightning Brewery, Part 1

Lightning Brewery

(NSFW)

This episode we talk with Jim Crute from Lightning Brewery.  We talk about how Lightning started and topics like the Lagunitas v. Sierra Nevada lawsuit over the IPA logo.  To help with the interview, I am joined by Hooker and Brian Beagle from Sore Eye Sports.  Since the interview went fairly long, the episode has been split into two parts.  The second part will be released later this week.

We also have a very good discussion about the lawsuit between Lagunitas and Sierra Nevada.  You might be surprised what conclusion a few of us come to.  More topics to come in part two.

Episode #9: Council Brewing

Council Brewing

(NSFW)

We are back in 2015 and have some great guests!  Liz and Curtis Chism from Council Brewing Co. join us.  While not as crazy as some shows in 2014, Greg and Melinda ask the questions we hope you want to know.  We hope this helps educate yourself about what it takes to open and run a brewery in today’s crowded marketplace.

Interview:

Liz and Curtis give us a behind-the-scenes look at not just opening a brewery, but what it takes to distribute their beer.  We chat about brewing sours and barrel-aging beers.  We also talk about what to do if your beer is bad (or really) what to do if your customers think your beer is bad.  We respond to our first iTunes review which talks about a certain female co-host.
