Episode 168.5: After Hours with Indieversity, What’s on Draft?, & SD Beer Dudes

(NSFW)

Are you ready to get random?!?  Well, that’s exactly what you get with this After Hours show.  While Beagle has left for the night, Greg, Esthela, and Travis stuck around.  Pariah let us stay an extra hour so we decided to record more.  We are joined by Aaron Mayer from Indieversity, What’s On Draft?, and you may catch him pouring beer at Intergalactic.  In addition, we are also joined by half of SD Beer Dudes, Adam Alonso.

The show starts off like you’d expect, all over the place.  We open up a few coconut beers, Space Oasis, a coconut porter from Intergalactic, and Hop Puddin’, a hazy DIPA with coconut and vanilla from Thunderhawk Alements, Amplified Ale Works, and The Routine.  We delve into the party that was at Thunderhawk for the album release of Puddin’ from The Routine and some of the fun during the event.  We do finally get serious and talk about Indieversity and what Aaron’s plan is for it.  Aaron wants any independent brewery to join him and create a beer called Indieversity in hopes of growing the education of #IndieBeer.  We switch over to Adam who talks about what SD Beer Dudes is up to at the San Diego International Beer Festival.

Finally, we are joined by Zana Martorana who works for 2kids, Intergalactic, and Deft, and joined by Craig Nelson who brews at Resident Brewing.  We really don’t talk to them too long before we wrap up.  It was time for the lovely beertenders at Pariah to close the place down.

Episode 168: My Cat From Helles Charity Event

(NSFW)

We are back at one of our home bases, Pariah Brewing.  Pariah invited us to do a live show at their release of My Cat From Helles where the some of the proceeds and all of the tips that night went to charity.  Last year when Pariah did a charity event, they chose only one charity, this year they wanted to increase that.  This year the charities involved were the YWCA and Sweet Souls Foundation.  We are joined first by Christa Mitchell, the co-founder, and wife of Brian Mitchell.  Christa explains the history of the beer and what this night is all about.

We take a break and come back with all four co-hosts and open up a few listener beers.  and then get into a topic where The Brew Project has changed their name to Project Bar and Grill and changed their business model a little to focus more on mixed cocktails and CBD products.  We move onto the news next are have a surprise guest, Tanya Schroeder who used to work for Second Chance and now works for Duck Foot.  Tanya gives some perspective on the beer scene and beertending.

  • Amplified Ale Works opening a new brewpub/cocktail bar/coffee roaster in the East Village area.  They are also expanding the Miramar Ignitor brewery and have built a new tasting room in the PB location. The new spot will be at 1429 Island Ave.

Episode 167: Council Brewing Santee

(NSFW)

We have a few three-time guests on the show this week!  We headed over to Council’s new tasting room and brewhouse in Santee, CA.  It is about 11 miles East of their Kearny Mesa tasting room and brewhouse.  The Santee location used to be Finest Made Ales (aka Butchers) and Manzanita Brewing.  We are joined again by Liz and Curtis Chism (and baby Olivia.)

There’s some pre-show banter but then we get into it and Liz breaks down how this spot became Council’s new Santee location.  From there we find out that Council has a really cool item they bought to help with buying beers to go and their strategy with their future of bottle and can sizes.  We take a small break to get more beer.

We come back with kombucha talk.  Council is producing their own kombucha that generally stays under 1% ABV.  We ask more about their last year and what trends have they seen in their fourth year.  Esthela wonders what beers will be brewed at Santee versus beers at Kearny Mesa.  That transitions to the amount of beer they may produce with the new system.  After mentioning one of their really amazing tasting room managers, Liz talks more about hiring people from the area and how it helps build confidence from patrons.  We then go over the details of the grand opening of the Santee location which will be three days, June 8-10, 2018.

In the News

  • Brian Kelly joins Cervecería Transpeninsular. He was at Burning Beard prior and did a 3-year stint at Coronado Brewing before that.
  • #Societe6 coming up.
    • Starting at Noon on Wednesday, June 6th, patrons can buy a 6th Anniversary glass for $10 which includes the first fill and every fill after that is $1 until June 30th!
    • This year’s new beer is a Hoppy Pilsner called The Mistress. Includes Saphir, Sterling and Hallertau Blanc hops.
    • And big news, Societe will start filling 32oz. Crowlers!

Special Guest!

We are joined by Joel Geier from Brewery Travels and Sommbeer.  The last time he was on the show, he had just been in San Diego for a few weeks on vacation.  Now he’s been in San Diego for just about three months and has his report card on his experience in the Capital of Craft.

(NSFW)

It’s just the hosts today!  We didn’t have any special planned so we decided to have only the hosts on, it’s been awhile when we’ve done this.  We start off the show with San Diego Magazine’s Best Restaurants of 2018.  We drink a few beers as well, an unreleased Belgian IPA from Longship Brewery and an NE style IPA from Ola Brew.  Of course, we give our opinions on both.  After a break, we finish up the Best Restaurants segment and open up beers from Burning Beard, Modern Times, and Toolbox.  We move into other topics like:

  • The San Diego Brewers Guild’s new SD Beer app.
  • Whether or not you should drink from the can or always pour into a glass?
  • What factors to do you look at when going into a new brewery?
  • When do you Stout?

Episode 165: You Gotta Get Drunk to Make Some Music w/ The Routine, Thunderhawk, & Amplified Ales

(NSFW)

We finally got them on the show!  The Routine, who does all our music on the show, joins us along with folks from Thunderhawk Alements and Amplified Ale Works.  A new album from The Routine is coming out June 2nd called Puddin’.  Along with that album, The Routine collaborated with Thunderhawk and Amplified to make a new beer also called Puddin’.  That beer will be released in cans starting May 25th at both breweries.  There will a big party on June 2nd at Thunderhawk for the album release and The Routine along with IMAGINARY MACHINE and Jonny Tarr.

Interview

From the start of the show, you can tell this one will be really fun.  We are joined by Bryan Barbarin (Vocals), Russell Ramo (Guitar), Nick Hein (Bass), and Dave Butterfield (Drums) from The Routine as well as Jonathan Barbarin from Thunderhawk and Demetra Hamill from Amplified.  After the introductions, we start with the music section of this collaboration and ask the guys how the album came to be.  We then move on to the collaboration beer and talk to both brewers about their involvement in the beer.  We go in and out of many topics, not all are relevant.  After a break where we play a new, unreleased song from The Routine called Goldilocks.  When we come back we try to get more information on the beer and when it will be released.
