Episode #136: Stone Farking Wheaton w00tstout Vertical

(NSFW)

It’s that time of the year, it’s San Diego Beer Week!  We wanted to start off the week with something sessionable and low-key….Ya right!  We have all the Stone Farking Wheaton w00tstout beers starting with 1.0 also known as the 2013 version and ending with the w00tstout brewed in Stone’s Berlin brewery.  If you are unaware of w00tstout, it is a yearly released beer during Comic-con that is a collaboration between Drew Curtis, the founder of fark.com, Wil Wheaton, actor, geek, and homebrewer, and Greg Koch, the co-founder of Stone.  The 2.0 version did not have Greg Koch’s help but did include Aisha Tyler in his place.

We start off the show right away with the 2013 version.  Once we talk a little about it, we delve into 2.0 also known as the 2014 version which included a slightly different recipe.  During the drinking of 2.0, we get into the topic of trends we noticed in 2017.  While we drink 3.0 and 4.0, we get into the heaviest topic of the night, sexism in craft beer.  After a long conversation about sexism, we talk a little about 4.0 and then immediately open up 5.0.  The next topic is if we think beer geeks are still interested in verticals or are they only into the new, shiny can releases.  We open up the German version of w00tstout and get into the news and one last topic about places you don’t tell people because you want it to remain a secret.

All the w00tstout beers

  • 1.0 – 13% – 07/15/2013 – Rye, wheat malt and pecans and partially aged in bourbon whiskey barrels.
  • 2.0 – 13.5% – 07/14/2014 – Rye, wheat malt and pecans and partially aged in bourbon whiskey barrels. Added stone-ground chocolate from Aisha Tyler.
  • 3.0 – 13% – 07/13/2015 – Rye, wheat malt and pecans and partially aged in bourbon whiskey barrels. Blended with one-year BA 2.0.
  • 4.0 – 13% – 07/11/2016 – Rye, wheat malt and pecans and partially aged in bourbon whiskey barrels.
  • 5.0 – 13% – 07/10/2017 – Rye, wheat malt and pecans and partially aged in bourbon whiskey barrels.
  • ZÜPER MAGIK W00TSTOUT – 10% – 09/21/2017 – Rye, wheat malt, pecans, and almonds and partially aged in bourbon whiskey barrels.

In the News

  • Derek Gallanosa has announced the brewery project he is a part of in NorCal.  Based in Rocklin (north of Sacramento) Moksa Brewing Co. will be Derek’s new home.  Cory Meyer and Derek will be the brewers there.  December-January opening, around 1,000 barrels next year, topping out at 2,500 at max.
  • As mentioned in the last episode, Second Chance has opened up their tasting room in North Park.

Episode #136.5: The W00t Stout (Before) Aftershow

(NSFW)

When we finished Episode 136, our w00tstout vertical show, no one wanted to leave yet.  There was plenty of things our friends wanted to talk about so we kept rolling.  Please enjoy this little wacky but still informative (before) aftershow!

After some back and forth about the beers we are drinking, we do eventually get to some topics.  Hansen wants to know what San Diego Beer Week events are people excited for.  After a little more joking around, the conversation does turn serious when we talk about Barrio Logan’s gentrification and if the companies entering are helping or hurting the local community.

Episode #135: Bay City Brewing

(NSFW)

In this show, we headed over to Bay City Brewing.  We are joined by their co-founder, co-owner Ben Dubois, M.D., and their head brewer Chris West.  Bay City has been around for around two years and is the brewery to brew 72 and Hoppy, which has become a very controversial beer and has been mislabeled as San Diego’s “official” beer by the Tourism Board.  We definitely get into that conversation later in the show.

Interview

We start off with Ben and wonder why he opened up Bay City.  We wonder if their close proximity to Modern Times is a benefit or hindrance.  We can’t do a show without asking the most asked question, how did they get into craft beer and what was their first craft beer.  We ask how they separate themselves from the other 140+ breweries around town.  That morphs into a conversation about the drinkability of beer and how they brew their beers with that in mind.

After a short break to fill up our glasses, we come back to talk about their best selling beers.  After a discussion about style guidelines for beers, we wonder what they are doing during San Diego Beer Week.  We find out they will have their first bottled beer that will be available only at the brewery on November 9th.  Brian wants to know more about the statistics of the brewhouse.  We end the interview with 72 and Hoppy and the controversy around that.

In the News

    • Eppig Brewing constructing waterfront tasting room in Point Loma.  2817 Dickens Street – total 1,200 square feet. 20 taps, a wrap-around patio that comes in between 2,400 and 3,000 square feet.  Small food items that will not clash with local seafood places. Hopefully November/December.
    • Northern Pine Brewing opened last Friday, soft opening. 326 North Horne St., Oceanside
    • Ebullition Brew Works had their grand opening over two weekends.  Congrats!  Maybe a show soon!
    • Brewers Association started the Take Craft Back campaign to buy AB-InBev for $213 Billion.  Currently over 9400 pledges for $3 million.  Pledge any amount and you then you may get a choice of free stuff.  Seems like it’s down to stickers & Koozies.
    • Second Chance Beer will be opening soon in North Park.  Actually, they are OPEN NOW!  4045 30th Street.

Episode #134: Seven Caves Spirits

(NSFW)

In this week’s show, we are joined by Geoff Longenecker, the founder of Seven Caves Spirits.  Since this is part 1 of our collaboration with Alt Brew Show, we are joined by Josh Hembree of Setting Sun Sake as a guest co-host.  Once you are done with this show, please head over the listen to the continuation on Alt Brew Show.

Interview

We wonder how and why he decided to start up a distillery.  We get into his brew system and how it differs from a brewery’s system.  There is a small aside on the myth that brewers and distillers drink all day long while brewing.  We have an update on the fire at SD Distillery and their current status.  Afterwards, Geoff talks about the first San Diego Distillers Guild festival.  We wonder what were the two rums we were poured and talk more about his process of making it.  During the conversation, we find out how much liquid is wasted.  Brian opens up an Oud Beersel Oude Kriek Vieille as we talk about Belgian beers.  We then delve into his future batches which then moves onto a consistency conversation.

After a break, we come back to Geoff talking about the stainless steel workshop next door and being in a bonded warehouse.  We find out more about some of the rums and scotches Geoff has in his collection.  Then we delve into the news and other segments.

In the News

Episode #133: If You’re Not Willing to Smell It, Then I’m Not Willing to Fill It!

(NSFW)

Are you ready for some of the best people in the beer industry?  You see them all the time when you visit your favorite brewery.  They make sure your experience doesn’t suck when you are there.  Of course, we are talking about the beertenders and tasting room managers!  We have a full panel of the “Front of the House” folks who serve you.  We are joined by Marta Swanson from Second Chance Beer Co., Shannon Lynnette from Burning Beard Brewing, Jacob Nikos from Small Bar and Societe Brewing, and Dylan Brown from Alpine Brewing Company.

Interview

First off, sit back and enjoy this show, there are a lot of ways this show goes.  As for the questions we actually ask, we start with the beers they all started with.  From there we wonder how they feel about the retail life and dealing with people.  We also ask what is it they do when someone comes in for the first time.  That morphs into how important it is how a bartender greets people compared to how a beertender greets people.

We take a break and come back in the middle of a joke.  We do get back on topic with a question on how can you correct someone who is talking to their friends but giving incorrect information about the industry.  We get into some of these beertenders’ special customers and how they treat them well.  What about party busses?  Does the Voice of San Diego Podcast Network know what they got when they asked us to join them?  We also get into the conversation of what is the appropriate pick-up window for online beer sales.  I wonder what do they look for when they hire a beertender.

Listener Questions

Andy Newbom – How can we move from asking “Whadda ya want!?” to more “Hi!  Have you had our X or Z before?” aka service rather than order taking.

Josh – What is a polite way to ask about clean draught lines?

ChewYourBeer

  • What’s the worst way of ordering a beer?
  • When I visit a brewery, I always pay cash, I tend to tip every time I order a pint, $1-2 bucks, is this ok, or should I tip at the end?
  • When I get an ”AWESOME” beertender, I tend to tip them personally (this is for you) & let them know they made my experience amazing, is this ok?
