Episode #120: Mapping the Hop Genome

(NSFW)

This episode is very different from any other show we have done.  We were lucky enough to be invited to a presentation about mapping the genome of hops.  This presentation was held in collaboration between Pacific Biosciences of California, the USDA, Oregon State University, and Sierra Nevada Brewing.  The presentations you will hear are from John Henning (USDA) and Dr. David Hendrix (Oregon State University.)

Episode #119: Super Mega Pod Part 1 with Three B Zine

(NSFW)

Are ou ready for the Super Mega Pod?  We are joined by the guys from Three B Zine so we can start this collaboration podcast on our show and then move over to their show on Part 2.  We are joined by Cody Thompson and Tom Prichard from 3B as well as Travis Hudson, who has been on both shows many times as a guest or co-host.  Our part of the show is very similar to a normal show, but this time Beagle creates a game for us to play.  The games continue on Part 2 of this collab show, check it out over at Three B Zine!

Interview

Since we did not want to change the show too much, we ask the standard podcast question when it comes to beer podcasts, what beer got you started in the craft.  We then want to know how Three B Zine started.  We also wonder how Tom got onto the show and how he started his blog.  We then ask what advice would give someone wanting to start a new blog, podcast, or video series on independent beer.  We open a few beers and we get into what is the best burger in San Diego.  We end with a game!

Before, In-Between, or After

Three B Zine posted their first show on July 11th, 2013 and SD BeerTalk posted ours on August 5th, 2014.  Did these following breweries open up before, in-between, or after the postings our first shows?

Episode #118: Longship Brewery’s 1st Anniversary

(NSFW)

We have another anniversary show, that’s two in a row!  Last week we got the opportunity to celebrate with Societe and this week we were invited to help celebrate a newer brewery, Longship Brewery.  We are joined by their owner and head brewer Dan Jachimowicz, the tasting room manager and event coordinator Ryan Celeste, and assistant brewer Chuck Nation.  Due to the nature of the party, where all three of these guys had to make sure their patrons were being served, we started with the first news topic and then interviewed Dan.  We ended up doing the rest of the news in between the other interviews.

In the News!

  • Ebullition Brew Works is now open.  It is located at 2449 Cades Way Suite D, Vista, CA 92081.
  • The BA launched a new seal to support independent breweries.
    • Logo (and idea) was a year in development
    • As of the recording, there are 883 breweries signed up (approx. 17%)
    • Nominal fee is not enforced right now, could be in the future
    • “Six viewpoints” video and op-ed in Chicago Tribune
      • Brands featured in the video: Elysian, Wicked Weed, 10 Barrel, Four Peaks, The High End, Devils Backbone
  • From the UT – The Lemon Grove City Council has hopped on board with other cities across the county, unanimously agreeing to change its zoning laws to allow alcoholic beverage manufacturing in certain areas of the city. A zone change would mean Lemon Grove will allow breweries, wineries, distilleries, brewpubs and wine bars in certain industrial and commercial zones. A final vote will be on July 18th.
  • Ironfire is opening up two tasting rooms, one in Temecula’s “Old Town” and one in SD, most likely Imperial Beach. No address for the San Diego location yet.  Story from the West Coaster.

Interview

Dan joins us and talks about his start in craft beer.  We ask him why he chose to theme the brewery around Vikings.  Dan then delves into some of his most popular beers.  That conversation goes directly into how craft beer drinkers like everything new and shiny and Dan talk about how they try to please every type of drinker.  Dan ends the conversation with a very heartfelt, emotional statement about his patrons and what they mean to him.

After a break and some more news, we are joined by Ryan.  Ryan talks about the tasting room and if dogs and kids are allowed.  Beagle runs down the beer list and asks Ryan to explain the beers and explain what each one is.  Since Ryan is also the events coordinator, Ryan goes into some future event and goals they want to do now that the first year is in the past.  I wonder what is something Ryan thought he was comfortable with before working for Longship but then realized he knew nothing about.

After another break, we come back to finish up the news segment.  Just as we are closing down the show, our last guest Chuck shows up.  We ask Chuck how he got started with Longship and what he does for Longship.  We ask him about some of the beers he’s brewed at Longship as well.  Beagle wants to know what Chuck drinks when he’s had a long day and what he will drink for this hot summer.  We also wonder what differences he has found brewing on a professional system.  We end the show with what Chuck would tell a non-craft beer drinker to get them into craft beer.

Episode #117: Societe’s 5th Anniversary

(NSFW)

Societe Brewing celebrated its quinquennial anniversary on June 24th and we were there!  The folks at Societe were nice enough to invite us for the festival.  While last year Societe hosted The First Quadrennial Brewers’ Games, where different breweries competed in different events to win awards, this year’s festival was more traditional with unlimited beer and an added benefit of some really nice food and beer pairings.  After the festival, those who bought a ticket for the feast got themselves a five-course dinner which was an exclusive rare beer and food pairing.  The group tasked with the food pairings for both the Fest and the Feast was The Five Chef Societe, headed by Karl Prohaska and includes many of the top chefs in San Diego.

In the News!

  • Intergalactic Brewing is unsure of its future.  Alex knows the current business plan is not working well enough to give his family when they need to live.  Ideally, he would like to find investors to keep the doors open.  However, he is not opposed to selling the equipment or the company in full.  This change may happen in a few weeks or may happen in a few months, he is not sure.
  • AleSmith Brewing’s collab with Sublime, Sublime Mexican Lager (40oz. to Freedom,) will be pre-sold in Eventbrite for $9.99 for the 40oz. bottle on July 8th and picked up at the brewery on or after July 15th.  12oz. cans will be sold at the brewery and in stores on or after July 15th.
  • Coronado Brewing is building a 1,000 square foot kitchen at their Bay Ho location.  They want to offer a higher standard of food and make sure it is more consistent.  The kitchen will have countertop equipment and a double level pizza oven for items like paninis, pizza, and other bar-like foods.

Interview

We come back from the break with Karl Prohaska, the head chef at Kitchens for Good and The Five Chef Societe.  Karl gives the listeners a rundown of what The Five Chef Societe is and what the anniversary party “Feast” entails.  Karl goes over the food that was at the festival and feast.  We then get into what Karl is up to now, which is helping people who are having a rough time in life learn life skills like cooking, financial needs, and a lot more.

After another break, we are back with Doug from Societe.  After a visit from Bobby Mathews, Doug talks about the new beers they released for the anniversary party.  During the explanation of the beers, we have our first sacrifice of the day, at least one we saw.  Doug explains how they made their newest Farrel beer, The Thief, and he talks about flavors and what he thinks separates their Farrel beers from “sour” beers.  Finally, we ask Doug about the South African hop controversy and he gives the craft beer drinkers some very good advice.

During this break, we left the mics alone and Jeff from Burning Beard and Bobby Mathews who is infamous in the San Diego beer scene, get on the mics for some karaoke.  Eventually, Brian gets on the mic to transition the show to our final segments as the festival comes to a close.

Episode #116: What’s the verdict on aging Council bottles?

(NSFW)

This episode is all about Council Brewing!  Just not what you think it is, it’s all about their beers.  Mainly, the beers that Beagle and myself have been saving since 2014.  Some of the beers are new and some are years old, how do they fair?  We are joined by Jeffrey Crane from Council who gives us a ton of insight on the beers we drink during the show, he had a hand in making all of these beers.  We are also joined by Hansen Hunt, who like us, is a craft beer evangelist that is not in the industry but knows everyone in it.

Side Topic

Recently there were social media reports of a brewpub (not in San Diego) that had a keg from an SD brewery on tap that may have had Diacetyl. What do you do in that situation?

  • As a brewery, do you take back the keg?
  • As the brewpub, do you sell the beer, claim ignorance?
  • As a consumer, what are our expectations?  Do you send it back?

Beers we drank on the show!

  • Starter beers – Hop Chunks from Benchmark Brewing and Sharks with Blazers from Home Brewing Co. and 32 North Brewing.
  • 2014 Nicene – Belgian Farmhouse Style Saison aged in Gewurztraminer wine barrels

  • 1st Anniversary House White – Imperial Sour White Ale aged in oak barrels
  • 1st Anniversary House Red – Imperial Sour Red Ale aged in oak barrels

  • During the break and to reset our palates – Resident Tempered Ego – NE style IPA with Motueka, Galaxy and Citra hops.
