Episode 111 is quite a different show than what you are used to.  In this episode, we have a panel of people in the industry and the subject for the show is if there is saturation of the craft beer industry in San Diego.  We are joined by:

In The News!

  • Mother Earth Brewing Co. to open Mother’s Provisions – they will serve beer, wine, cold brewed coffee, small plate food items, cheese, and charcuterie. Will be located at 204 Main St. in Vista.  Some hubbub about the name, yes, they have a relationship Brothers Provisions.
  • Wicked Weed cancels The Funkatorium Invitational after more than 50 breweries pull out due to ABInBev purchase – a reimagined festival will happen in August.
  • ABInBev decides they will keep all South African hops to themselves and not allow any to go to market. Modern Times hardest hit by this news in SD.
  • After a 9 month hiatus, Small Bar wins the battle with city and will open the patio!
  • Buy tickets to the 10th Anniversary of Pink Boots Society Festival. It happens on June 3rd at Liberty Station.
  • Stumblefoot Brewing has new owners! Bill Randolph sold the brewery outright to Cameron Rentch and Cory Schmelzer.  While they redesigned the brand’s logo and website, they decided to keep the Stumblefoot name.

Episode #110: Barrel Republic

Barrel Republic is a very different experience when it comes to a craft beer restaurant.  Their draft lines are set up as a pour-it-yourself system where you pour your own beer, wine, cider, kombucha, and coffee.  You walk in, get yourself a bracelet that is personalized to you, and then grab a glass and pour whatever you want.  We are joined by Sean Hale, the general manager, and Mike Brown, the executive chef.

Interview

The standard podcast question is asked, what got them into craft beer.  From there we get a tease of what Barrel Republic is known for, their digital draft system.  Then our food comes out so we ask Mike about their food.  After explaining a few dishes on their menu, Brian wants to know what they top selling dishes are.  Brian then wants to know what their most original dishes are.

After a break, we come back and start to ask them about how their draft system but we get interrupted by a train and then I have to ask about blended beers.  Then more food comes to the table, but we do get back to the process of walking into Barrel Republic and how the entire process works.  We get into the draft system, their glassware, how to clean the glasses, when to get new glasses, and more about what limits there are.

Episode #109: Mission Valley Craft Beer & Food Festival, Part 2

We come back and finish up our interviews at the Mission Valley Craft Beer & Food Festival.  Before the show starts, we recorded from a future podcast the news from last week.  Even though we try and get all the news, we did miss a “New Brewery Alert” in the news, Smoking Cannon Brewery in Ramona.  Also after recording the results of the Los Angeles International Beer Competition came out.  22 San Diego #IndieBeer breweries won 58 medals! 21 Gold, 19 Silver, 18 Bronze.

In The News

  • Benchmark to open a tasting room in Bay Park later this year. Located at 4112 Napier Street, the future sampling space will provide indoor and outdoor options for patrons. There will be roughly 1,000 square feet of interior space, outfitted with roll-up windows giving way to the street. An additional 1,500 square feet of space will be provided via an outdoor backyard patio of sorts.
  • Home Brewing Co. expanding the tasting room and adding a patio.  Probably with Brian building it.
  • New Brewery Alert! Chula Vista Brewery will have its grand opening on Cinco De Mayo. Located at 294 3rd Ave in Chula Vista. They may soft open at any time.

Alex Van Horne and Jake Collins – Intergalactic Brewing Company

We are joined by podcasting veterans Alex and Jake.  We first tangent our way to how cans and bottles should be dated.  Finally, we do catch up with what Intergalactic is up to and their anniversary party.  Since by the time you hear this the party is over, we do talk about the “May The Fourth” event also happening at their tasting room.  We talk Star Wars and hazy beers as well.

Episode #109: Mission Valley Craft Beer & Food Festival, Part 1

We are back at the Mission Valley Craft Beer and Food Festival, an annual tradition.  Like most of the festivals run by PushPins Media, it was really laid back and flowed really well.  As with previous festivals, we were given the VIP time to go around and try the beers, spirits, and food that was being served.  Once General Admission came in, it was time to get to work!  Enjoy the show

John was supposed to be our first guest of the day but turned out to be our third.  We start right off with an upcoming beer called Flesh and Blood, a Golden Sour beer aged in Blaufränkisch barrels with added cherries and raspberries.  John talks a little bit about the beer dinners they are doing.  Then a big announcement that they are going to start to can!  To begin it will be Little Brother, Golden Child, Prodigal Son, and Family Tart.  We talk a little bit about hazy beers and saturation in San Diego.

Episode #108: Barrel Harbor Brew Co.

We travel up to Vista and through some pretty heavy traffic to head up to Barrel Harbor Brew Co.  We are joined by the owners Tim St. Martin, the brewmaster Lance McCoy, and beertender and social media coordinator Kelsee.

Interview

As usual, we start with everyone’s intro to craft beers.  From there we get into how Barrel Harbor got its name.  That leads into talking about the statistics of the brewhouse and how hard it is when one of their best selling beers is a lager-style beer.  We take an early break and come back and talk more about some of their other beers, including a Dunkelweizen that came out a few days ago.  We do enter a topic that Lance is very opposed to, hazy IPAs.  After a good discussion, we talk about their new location in Miramar.  The tasting is partnered with At Ease Games which has turned out to be a good pairing.

After another break, we come back and talk about how Brown Ales should come back and how placed like Rip Current make killer beers, like “Triple IPA.”  Then we get into listener comments and questions.
