Episode 164: Let Me BeerTalk About It

(NSFW)

Are you ready for another collaboration podcast?  We are joined by Jacob Nikos who is one half of Let Me Drink About It, a local beer podcast on the YEW! network.  Nikos just announced that Jake Collins is the other half of the show.  You may remember Jake from a few of our previous shows.  While Jake is not here, we were very happy we could get together and record two shows on one night, go listen to the Nikos’ show here.

Interview

After some shenanigans, we find out more about Nikos and how he started in the industry and what his first craft beer.  We wonder what got him started in the podcast game.  We drink a 2kids Brewing and Pink Boots Society collab and then ask Nikos if he wants about the current Green Flash and Alpine news.  We discuss that for a bit and then get back into some fun.  If you did not know, Societe has a burrito challenge and Nikos is happy to talk about it since he has done it a few times.  A second beer we brought was The Funk IPA from Protector Brewery.  It was a very different beer and you’ll hear our thoughts on that.  Since we recorded two shows at once, we are already running out of time, we start the rapid round:

  • When you get a chance to go outside your normal work environment, where do you go?
  • Is Small Bar like a mullet, short in the front and long in the back?
  • Have you been contacted by non-beer PR firms to do a show?
  • What is the most fun thing you have been able to do because you work at Societe?
  • What are some of your White Whale show guests?
  • You keep talking about some big plans coming up, can you say anything?
  • You usually have amazing customer stories, what was the last horrible customer?

Episode 163: 2018 Rhythm and Brews Festival

(NSFW)

This week we went up to Vista, CA to attend the Rhythm and Brews festival held by the San Diego Brewers Guild.  It is one of two main festivals run by the Guild and almost all the great San Diego breweries were there.  It is a lot of fun and if you could not make it this year, it is a great idea to look out for it next year.  We had a ton of people that wanted to be on the show, so be prepared for a long show.  Yes, we do get drunker and drunker as the day goes on.  Enjoy!

Episode 162: It’s Game Night with SD BeerTalk!

(NSFW)

We’ve been making the show a tad bit too serious lately so let’s have some fun!  We are joined this show by all four hosts, Esthela, Brian, Greg, and Travis.  That’s not all, we are also joined by returning guest Beth Demmon who you might know from Final Draught on San Diego CityBeat and the writer who wrote the article about glitter beer that went viral.

Stay until the end of the show, there’s some extra conversation about our newest thoughts on the Green Flash and Alpine situation.

The Games

  • Us Trivia – Trivia questions where only the five people on the show are the answers
  • Caskagories – The beer version of Scattergories
  • $5 Quiz – Answer questions with randomly assigned points to win $5

News

  • Brewers Association Names J. Nikol Jackson-Beckham as First Ever Diversity Ambassador. She will travel around the country to state guild and other craft brewing community events to speak on best practices for diversifying both customer bases and staff and to listen to current challenges in this area.  Read the BA’s press release for more information.
  • Coronado’s Imperial Beach location may be in jeopardy. The building is up for sale so the tasting room is on hold for now. Just like Barrel Rescue, the new owners may not accept a brewery as a tenant.
  • JuneShine is the name of the high gravity kombucha brewery next to Pariah/Eppig.
  • Stone and MillerCoors have been trading punches back and forth. It’s gonna be a while before this settles or a judgment is reached.
  • The Routine, Thunderhawk, and Amplified are brewing Hop Puddin’ to coincide with their new album Puddin’ releasing June 2nd. Hazy IPA w/ Toasted Coconut & Madagascar Vanilla.

Episode 161: Women in #SDBeer

(NSFW)

Esthela takes the reigns on this show and we have our first all-women show.  While we have had many women guests on the show before, we wanted to see what happens when the men are gone.  While Greg was there to make sure all the technical stuff was taken care of, he enjoyed just sitting back and listening to the panel for once.

Interview

The panel was comprised of:

Since Angela has to leave fairly soon after we started recording, we wanted to give her the chance to talk about what It’s All About the Kids is all about.  There is an event coming up called Champagne and Purses where the proceeds will be going to It’s All About the Kids, for tickets you can go to www.ChampagneAndPurses.com.

Esthela starts the rest of the show off by wondering where everyone got their start and how they entered the craft beer industry.  From there the conversation goes towards how they feel about the industry and how the scene has changed since they started.  Esthela moves the topic to sexism in the industry and how the panelists have dealt with it and how they think it can change going forward.

The panelists talk about some events coming up:

  • Karl Strauss – Art & Amps – Free – Starts May 19th
  • Iron Fist – Hops on the Harbor – $74.50 – April 27th
  • Machete Beer House – Pizza Port & 3 Floyds Shredd Session – Cinco de Mayo Insurgente tap takeover
  • Hoppy Beer Hoppy Life – Rhythm and Brews – $45-$65 – May 5th
  • MishMash – SD CityBeat Burger Week – $10 combo – May 4th-12th

Esthela wonders how people on the panel stay relevant.  With some brewers on the panel working in older breweries and other panelists owning their own businesses, there is a wide range of responses.  Laura asks a question about serving women patrons and how is it when there is a male bartender.  Esthela asks what beer they grab when they are not working.  That moves into a discussion of going to a place that has a nice atmosphere.  We finish up with a listener question.

Listener Question

Queso – So in the military higher ranked women are harder on the women that are just starting out, do you see that and if yes if you believe in equality why wouldn’t you be more welcoming?

Episode #160: 2018 Mission Valley Craft Beer and Food Festival

(NSFW)

We are back at the Mission Valley Craft Beer and Food Festival, an annual podcasting tradition.  Like most of the festivals run by PushPins Media, it was really laid back and flowed really well.  As with previous festivals, we were given the VIP time to go around and try the beers, spirits, and food that was being served.  Once General Admission came in, it was time to get to work!  We do want to warn you, at times this show is drunk and pointless.  Enjoy the show!

In the News

Tyson Blake – Chef and General Manager of O’Brien’s Pub

Just as we were getting into the news, Tyson from O’Brien’s Pub pops in.  We decided to drop the rest of the news (which we talked about in Episode 159 anyway) and get to the guest.  We wonder what dish he brought to hopefully go back-to-back with the best plate at the festival.  There is a beer dinner on May 20th with Second Chance Beer Co.  Tickets can be bought at the pub only.  Hint: There is a beer dinner with Eppig Brewing too on April 22nd, we are not sure if there are tickets left though.

Tyler Tucker – Head Brewer of Bitter Brothers Brewing

Tyler joins us to talk about how it was to be hired right before their second anniversary.  We wonder if Bitter Brothers is really a family atmosphere.  How did they treat him with their current lineup if beers?  We then delve into the Green Flash news, from a few weeks ago, but what is interesting is we start wondering who will take over the Cellar 3 location.  We finish it up with some future events for Bitter Brothers.

Alex Van Horne – Owner and Head Brewer of Intergalactic Brewing & Larry Monasakanian – Sales Guru of Fall Brewing & Aaron Mayer of What’s on Draft

The next guests on the show are Alex from Intergalactic and Larry from Fall.  We ask Alex how his Grand Reopening was and how he was able to stay afloat instead of selling the brewery.  After drinking some beers from our own coolers, Aaron Mayer from What’s on Draft joins us.  Most of this segment is talking about the beers we open up.

Abraham and Jesus – Creative Creature Brewing & Zach – Pariah Brewing

I swear we have a schedule of people that are supposed to come on the show during festivals like this.  We jump right in with the guys from Creative Creature Brewing and talk about where they are opening and when.  We get our scheduled guest on to talk about Pariah Brewing and their latest release, Mamba Mode.  We wonder how they clean the draft lines.  We get into some future events for Pariah.  Immediately we switch over to our next guest.

Dylan Brown – Alpine Beer Co. & Rudy – Craft Beerd

We try to interview Dylan, but hilarity ensues.  Eventually, we do finally talk to Dylan and since this was before the foreclosure, we talk about it as a good thing for San Diego.  We ask Dylan about what else is going on at Alpine.  It seems to be a trend of this show, we are joined out of the blue by Rudy Pollorena Jr. of Craft Beerd.

Karen Barnett – Owner of Small Bar

We come back with a first-time guest of the show.  Brian is a frequent customer of Small Bar and has a lot of questions for Karen.  Most of the questions are about her food options, including Steak Night.  Esthela asks how the beer list is chosen.  We can’t have Karen on the show without having her talk about her stance on the number of tasting rooms and bars around town.  Specifically, she talks mostly about Normal Heights and North Park, but it isn’t the only spot in San Diego that is packed with beer spots.

Michela Potenza – Brewer of Hoppy People

A special bonus interview is Michela who is a brewer from Hoppy People in Switzerland.  She happened to be in town attending the festival.  We ask her how much she brews and how the culture is out in Switzerland.  We were very happy to have her on the show to get a perspective on another region of the world.
