Episode #108: Barrel Harbor Brew Co.

(NSFW)

We travel up to Vista and through some pretty heavy traffic to head up to Barrel Harbor Brew Co.  We are joined by the owners Tim St. Martin, the brewmaster Lance McCoy, and beertender and social media coordinator Kelsee.

Interview

As usual, we start with everyone’s intro to craft beers.  From there we get into how Barrel Harbor got its name.  That leads into talking about the statistics of the brewhouse and how hard it is when one of their best selling beers is a lager-style beer.  We take an early break and come back and talk more about some of their other beers, including a Dunkelweizen that came out a few days ago.  We do enter a topic that Lance is very opposed to, hazy IPAs.  After a good discussion, we talk about their new location in Miramar.  The tasting is partnered with At Ease Games which has turned out to be a good pairing.

After another break, we come back and talk about how Brown Ales should come back and how placed like Rip Current make killer beers, like “Triple IPA.”  Then we get into listener comments and questions.

  • Mike’s Craft Beer (Instagram: mikescraftbeer) – That is an epic logo.
  • Keith Wilson (Instagram: kwilphoto) – Such a great place!

Episode #107: Half Door Brewing Co.

(NSFW)

We head to Downtown San Diego just before the Padres have their opening weekend to visit Half Door Brewing.  In this episode, we are joined by guest co-host Derek Gillespie, from Mash Heads, Andy Newbom, coffee entrepreneur and guest of Alt Brew Show Episode 4, and our guest Dan Drayne, the Brewmaster of Half Door.  Get ready for a very drunk, and fast-talking conversation with Dan.

P.S.  If you happen to like skateboarding then make sure to stay until the end.

Interview

Dan started his roots with cider surprisingly enough.  From there and after more homebrewing he got a job at Coronado.  From there he got a job canning and eventually got into brewing.  We talk a little bit about where the name came from for Half Door which goes into a small talk about trademarks.  We then get into the size of his brewhouse and what kind of beers he generally brews.  Dan starts to get into places that have core beers and we take an unexpected early break.

After coming back from the break, we are in the middle of Dan talking about the BJCP with Andy and how it could be seen as outdated.  Not surprisingly that leads us into a talk about water and how San Diego does not have the best water, Dan is actually “Passionately hate the water..”  Next up, the newest trend in beer, hazy IPAs and how Dan makes some of the best ones in the city. After the haze talk, Dan talks more about what sells well.  That leads into a discussion of distribution.  We switch topics over to Downtown San Diego and how it is when the Padres games are going on.  We get back to the beer and Brian is curious how things like hop oil, lupulin powder, and other items from hops.

  • Travis Hudson (Instagram: craftbeerluv619) – Ask Dan who his favorite distributor driver is.
  • Chance Shay (Instagram: chanceshay) – How did Dan learn the NE IPA style?  CommentchanceshayAlso, why is he still out throwing around kegs? Haha I see him loading kegs all the time.
  • Raul Meza (Instagram: raulmeza83) – Any bourbon barrel aged beers?

Episode #106: North Park Beer Co.

(NSFW)

We are back in North Park this week, to be exact we are at North Park Beer Co.  Kelsey McNair joins us to talk all about his brewery and how it was going straight from homebrewer to professional brewer and owner.  Who needs to start at the bottom?

Interview

While we do start with the usual question, we do get into the meat of the interview fairly quickly.  After talking about the really cool tasting room and his rise from homebrewer to pro, we get into a few beers that are drinking that night.  We then go into the North Park staff and how is it that he has had very little turnover since opening.   We get into the specifications of the brewhouse and some of the issues he had opening up.  After drinking another beer we take a break.

After the break, we get into a listener question that delves even more added onto it about how Kelsey figures out his recipes and if he just brews recipes he comes up with without testing them.  We then continue on with the rest of the listener questions.

  • Chancelor Shay (Instagram: chanceshay) – What factors into deciding what style beers to brew and how to brew them?
  • 2 Pints Marketing (Instagram: 2pintsmarketing) – How did your early memories of beer influence your brewing style?
  • Joaquin Basauri (Instagram: joaqbrews) – When are peracetic punch recording their debut album?
  • Jake Collins (Instagram: jakewilliamcollinsthefirst) – I’ve always found the service in the tasting room to be pretty solid. What are Kelsey thoughts on the service side of running a brewpub?
  • Nick Napoletano (Instagram: thenick80) – When is he coming to Fresno?

In The News!

In 2016, craft brewers produced 24.6 million barrels, adding 1.4 million barrels, craft brewer growth outpaced the 1.2 million barrels lost from the craft segment, based on purchases.
  • L.A. Brewers Guild Withdraw from May 6 Galaxy Event – Cheers & Beers event which was to take place at the StubHub Center on May 6th. New requirements to include brands that do not meet the Guild’s definition of “craft beer” have unfortunately caused them to pull the event which would have featured over 15 small and independently-owned L.A. Brewers. (Thanks to Cody for the heads up)

Episode #105: Fall Brewing Co.

(NSFW)

Definitely one of the funnest episodes we’ve done!  You’ll hear the craziness right away.  We are joined by owner and head brewer Ray Astamendi and sales guru Larry Monasakanian from Fall Brewing Co.  For the most part the show stays on track, but don’t be surprised if there’s a few times you are very confused on what is going on.

Interview

Yes we sounds like a record player, but we start off with the guests’ entrance into craft beer.  From there we get the history of Fall and why Ray started it.  That quickly turns into some of the specifics of the brewhouse.  There’s something about “Unicorn Hot Dogs” and then we move onto Ray’s job with Premier Stainless.  Then we take an early break.

After the break we open up a few beers from one of our listeners, Vance from South Carolina.  We do circle back to the beers that are on tap at Fall.  The guys talk about their most popular beers, but also there’s a longer conversation about the beers that aren’t selling.  From there were get into listener questions and the news.  But don’t worry, there’s still plenty of hilarity during all of this.

  • Matthew Garcia (Instagram: therealmatatat) – Why won’t they just keep original Jinxremover on tap or at least make it again?
  • Hillary Jones (Instagram: _hillarymae) – Felix the cat?!
  • Mike (Instagram: socalbrewcrew) – There was a rumor of a satellite tasting room in Chula Vista, is this true or false? Please, PLEASE say true!
  • Markus (Instagram: jynxbaby1508) – Why is greenhat so good?

In The News!

  • Fourpenny House coming to La Mesa – Downtown La Mesa, 8325 La Mesa Boulevard.  Brewpub started by Peter Soutowood (brewmaster) and Khalid Kyler (head brewer), two-and-a-half-barrel brewing system and five-tank cellar.

Episode #104: New English Brewing Co.

(NSFW)

We are very happy to be invited to do a show at “San Diego’s Most Underrated Brewery” New English Brewing Co.  We are joined by the husband and wife team of Simon Lacey and Nina O’Hara-Lacey.  Will this be “The Most Underrated Episode” ever?  Hope you enjoy!

Interview

We get some insight on how Simon got started in the industry and how Nina has been very accepting of his carer change.  From there we get into how the New English brewing system started and how it has grown.  After a few of the technical specs of the brewhouse, we mention we are in their packaging room.  That led into a discussion about distribution and how New English is one of the breweries that is heavy distributed in bottles and bars.  While other breweries have found it tough when the market switched from strong bottled beer sales to now mainly tasting room sales, New English has found a way to to be successful in both areas.  We get back into some of the technical parts of the brewery and ask Simon what his favorite beer is to brew and his best selling beers.  Simon even gives us a glimpse into the recipes of a few of those beers.

After a break we come back with some Chocotaso!  Yes, it is back, ChewYourBeer sent us the regular Chocotaso and the coffee variant.  You’ll hear all of our opinions of each beer.  Brian wants to know what is the best part of being a brewer is for Simon.  Then we delve into the title of “San Diego’s Most Underrated Brewery.”  Throughout the show we also had a few listeners questions.

  • Josh B (Twitter: sandieGOlakers) – Why did he pick Sorrento Valley to start a brewery?
  • Derek Gillespie (Twitter: derekgillespie) – how do his bottles retain such a low price point in grocery stores? And the beer is delicious!
  • Thad Hart (Twitter: theonemanzone) – Ask Simon how his taste in beer and what he likes to brew has changed since opening his brewery.

In The News!

  • Quantum Brewing’s grand RE-opening started on March 15th.  Martin Beaulieu acquired the business. If listening to this on Monday, the rest of the events are:

In addition to our production brewery, we will have a restaurant, as well as both a rooftop bar and an outdoor beer garden.
  • Speakeasy Ales & Lagers Ceases Operations – Started 1997 in San Francisco. forced to immediately cease brewing, packaging, and tap room operations at their San Francisco brewery for an indefinite period of time. Difficulty securing capital investment and outstanding debt obligations led to this difficult and painful decision. The company’s primary creditor will determine the future of the brewery and brand, and no decision or further information is available at this time.
