Episode 173: Protector Brewery

(NSFW)

“Come join the Navy SEALs, have you tried the Hef?”  We talk to a few former Navy SEALs that decided to open up a brewery.  We record this show at Protector Brewery, part of the Miralani Makers District, and an all organic brewery, the only one in San Diego.  On the show, Sean Haggerty and Ryan Sangster join us to get into the history of the brewery and we drink all the beers.

Interview

Normally we find out more about the owners and brewers, but the history of their journey is so closely tied to the creation of this brewery.  We find out how Protector got its branding as well as where the first “homebrewed” beer was made.  We wonder why they chose to open up the spot in the Miralani Makers District where there is a lot of competition.  Since Beagle was one of the people who bid for the construction job, we do have some construction talk.  We talk about the first beer of the eight that happened to be on tap that night.  Esthela wonders why they decided to go all organic.  That leads us to try the next three beers in the flight.

After a short break, we come back with the nitro version of one of the beers get into the statistics of the brewhouse.  We drink more of the second flight and move onto future beers and collaborations.  A ghost from the past comes along when we discuss the first Protector beer we ever had on the show, The Sour IPA.  After some more flight beers, Esthela brings up a topic that is hot right now in craft beer, being overly masculine as a brand, she wonders how Protector responds to the criticism.  We then get into the news.

Episode 172: Over-The-Line Lager with OMBAC & Second Chance

(NSFW)

This week’s show might focus on one beer release, but the story behind it is a lot more than the beer in the can.  The Over-The-Line Lager is a collaboration between the Old Mission Bay Athletic Club (OMBAC) and Second Chance Beer Co.  We are joined by Marty Mendiola from Second Chance and Tom Doyle & Patrick Vaughan from OMBAC.  If you are not familiar with the Over-The-Line (OTL) tournament, it is a sport similar to baseball however, there is no running necessary.  This is perfect for the crowd it was created by and made for, beach people show want to drink and have fun.  Enjoy the show and some of the hilarity that comes with the tournament.  If you want to participate by either playing OTL or just watching you have some different options.

  • Become a team participating in the tournament.  $120 per team, sign up here.
  • Watch the tournament for free happening July 14th-15th and 21st-22nd.

Interview

The show starts off with some talk of the Sore Eye Cup award-winning beer, Tabula Rasa, and some of the new awards Second Chance has won recently.  We then switch gears to find out how this beer came to be.  We ask the folks at OMBAC about the OTL tournament and how it started.  We also find out what roles Tom and Patrick have with OMBAC.  We also find out there is a beer festival, with actual craft beer!  After some talk about some of the members that have been very successful in winning the tournament, we take a break.

After the break, we come back and ask more about the two weekends of the tournament.  We hear about a few very interesting names of teams, BTW these are not PC at all.  We also learn about some bad injuries while playing.  The conversation switches to their Miss Emerson beauty pageant.  Tamara Vaughan joins us to talk about that part of the club and what it means, it’s not just about good looks.  We get back to the OTL beer and learn more about it.  We open up a beer from Cerveza Fauna for the anniversary of the city of Mexicali, Mexico, as well as another beer from ChewYourBeer, Lunar Kitten from Los Angeles Ale Works.  Finally, do not forget to vote for your favorite beer for the annual Sore Eye Cup award!

Episode 171: It’s Bottle Share Time w/ Brett Stampf from Alta Brewing!

(NSFW)

It’s another bottle share show!  While our listeners might not have as much fun as the people who came to the show, we promise fun times overall.  We are at the newly renamed Project Bar and Grill which used to be The Brew Project.  However, we start the show off with a little bit of sad news.  We are joined by the former head brewer (still partial owner) of Alta Brewing, Brett Stampf.

Interview

We start the show with a short, but informative interview with Brett.  We learn a little bit about what happened with Brett and what will happen to Alta Brewing.  This isn’t the first time a brewer and his or her financial partners have had different ideas on how to run and grow a brewery.  In this case, it became a relationship that could no longer last.  Find out more about our thoughts on the “temporary” closing of Alta Brewing.  Read more about it at the West Coaster.

The Rest of the Show

We come back after some bottle sharing with even more beer and give our review of the new Silva Stout.  We talk more about Back to the Filter since, you know, Beagle.  Then we discuss how Esthela was featured in the West Coaster!  She is one of the two ladies interviewed by Beth Demmon in her “Angels of Airwaves,” the other being Danielle Stuht from 91X’s Beer for Breakfast.  We decided to delve into the topic of how does everyone on the panel decide what goes on their beer calendar for 2018 and 2019.  What makes any of us decide to go to festivals, anniversary parties, can releases, beer pairing brunches/dinners, and tap takeovers?  Then we get into the news and after the show is over, Travis Hudson finally gets to speak his peace on can and bottle artwork.

Episode 170: Karl Strauss

(NSFW)

We are extremely excited to be at one of the oldest breweries in San Diego, Karl Strauss.  We had a fun time doing a live show at their tasting room and beer garden on Santa Fe Street, where the production facility is as well.  We are joined by R&D brewer Paul Segura.  While he holds that title right now, you’ll hear his history with Karl Strauss and how he got to where he is today.  Enjoy the look back in San Diego beer history.

Interview

While the interview starts off talking about a mistake he made while being an R&D brewer, we quickly switch the conversation to find out what the history of Karl Strauss is.  We are joined by Amy Spackman and cupcakes!  Amy talks about her role with Karl Strauss.  We get back to Paul and ask him the most asked podcast question ever.  After a short break, we come back and keep learning more about Paul’s history and his brewing background.  Afterward, we get into the statistics of the brewhouse and other brewery numbers.  After another break, we come back with the hard-hitting question of whether or not they will be brewing Aurora Brutialis or not.  After going over some of the new beers coming out, including their 30th Anniversary beer (a very big beer,) we talk about Arts & Amps.  Finally, we try to close out the show and get to the news topics.
