Episode 151: Esthela Likes to Drink

(NSFW)

We are excited to finally officially introduce our new co-host, Esthela Davila.  She’s been on the show since the beginning of the year, but since we already had scheduled the shows we never got a chance to really find out more about her.  We start with the usual question of what was her first craft beer.  From there we do a follow-up to the Thorn Brewing conversation from Episode 136.5.  We take a small break and come back wondering why Esthela said yes to join the show.  During the discussion, we pivot to her love of drinking #SDBeer and how it has changed since joining the show.  We then delve into a few questions from Matthew Garcia.

Listener Questions

Matthew Garcia – therealmatatat

  • The demographics of consumers in beer are mainly Caucasian. Which indie breweries located in San Diego would you say are the most welcoming to minorities in the community and why?
  • What could other indie breweries do to be more inviting to minorities?
  • What beer style or ingredient in beer can she not stand?
  • Opinion on TVs in breweries/bars.

Episode 149: Gravity Heights

(NSFW)

You all know that we love to be one of the first people to try new beers or new breweries.  Well, how about 10-11 months before they open?  We are interviewing Gravity Heights which is a brewpub planning to open up around October/November timeframe.  You’ll hear a bet being made at the end of the show, mark your calendars.

Interview

We are joined by the three men who want to open a brewery in these crazy times, but we have a feeling with the experience these guys have, it should be just fine.  The first person we introduce is someone any craft beer fan should know about, Skip Virgilio, who was the original founder of Alesmith before it was sold to Peter Zien.  We are also joined by Arturo Kassel, he is the managing partner of Whisknladle Hospitality which has opened up a number of restaurants in San Diego.  Our third guest is Ryan Trim, a member of QUAFF and how Skip and Arturo met.  After the introductions, we dive straight into the statistics of the brewhouse.  During the talk, we drink a few beers that Skip has brewed so far.  We end this part of the show with wondering how Ryan introduced Arturo to Skip.

After the break, we come back with more beer and talk about the 10th-anniversary beer for Whisknladle made by Skip and Rip Current.  We get back on track with the future brewpub and wonder what the food part will entail.  Afterwards, we ask Skip the most podcast question of them all.  There is some construction talk, but then we open up a very special beer that Skip was nice enough to bring to the show.  We can’t believe our eyes and our taste buds.  The conversation goes into if the beers at the brewpub will only be Gravity Heights or not.  Then Brian wagers whether or not Gravity Heights will make their opening date, the pressure is on!  We finalize our interview with the guys and then move into the news.  After the news and three voicemails, we have one last beer, a collaboration from Creative Creature Brewing and Electric Brewing.

Episode 148: Wild Barrel Brewing with Dr. Bill Sysak

(NSFW)

We have a returning guest, now at a new brewery. We welcome Dr. Bill Sysak back on the show.  The last time we had Dr. Bill on the show, he was with Stone Brewing and he was on to talk about the SDSU Business of Craft Beer program.  Since then Bill has left Stone and started up Wild Barrel Brewing along with his head brewer Bill Sobieski, business partner Chis White, and another silent business partner.

Interview

We will be drinking through the entire lineup of beers, so get out your notepads if you haven’t made it up to Wild Barrel yet.  While we are drinking his beers, we do talk a little about what the beers at Wild Barrel are meant to be and what purpose they serve to consumers.  We then get into the Nitro beer talk, is it something good or bad for the beer?  Even though Dr. Bill has been on the show before, we still wanted to hear what his history was with craft beer.  When we get to their hazy IPA, of course, we have to talk about the haze craze.  We continue the conversation with their other IPAs and find the different styles they do for all the different palate out there.

After a break, we come back with more beers.  We are drinking their San Diego Vice series of beers.  We talk a lot about the base beer vs. the fruited varients.  At some point, there is a break in the beers getting to the table, so we move into the equipment that Wild Barrel purchased.  We get more beer and then Brian wonders how Dr. Bill “started the bottle share.”  We continue with the Vice beers and get into a conversation about how well or poorly breweries add adjuncts into their beers.  We get into the homestretch and drink their stouts.  Before the news, we get into their statistics of the brewhouse.  We also open up some listener beers.

Episode 147: Thunderhawk Alements

(NSFW)

In Episode 147, we are joined by Bill Lindsay & Jonathan Barbarin from Thunderhawk Alements.  This fairly unknown brewery is inside the Miralani Makers District which includes three other breweries, two wineries, sake, mead, cider, food, coffee, and possibly spirits soon.  Also called Beeralani, this stretch of Miramar has a lot for craft enthusiasts to try.

Interview

We first wonder what is Thunderhawk’s ethos as a brewery.  That easily leads to Bill and Jon’s background in homebrewing.  We sidetrack a little bit into if you should use bad beer in cooking, save it by aging it, or just toss it.  Then realize our glasses are empty.

After a short break, we come back to Beagle talking about how many breweries there are and Jon discusses how that number led them to open how they did.  We eventually ask another question and wonder what the statistics are of the brewhouse.  We find out that one of the versions they have of their Saison is one that includes pine needles.  We talk more about their other beers and find out which ones are popular and which style of beer they did not have on tap when they opened.  Greg wonders if the market segment they had in their business plan is what came true.  The conversation morphs into talking about crowlers.

We take another break and come back with a challenge from Jon.  He will serve us a Smoked Coconut Porter that both Greg and Beagle are skeptical about.  In the meantime, we have a social media question and then get into the news.

Social Media Question

  • jsaunders44 – Which bars or parts of town will I start seeing their beers on tap? Or they going the retail/cans distribution route first? This beer is so muy Bueno! Especially #electricyouth & #nightpiercer

In the News

  • Green Flash laying off more employees and restructuring their distribution. 15% of the workforce will be let go. Distribution will drop from some states too.  More information here at West Coaster.
  • Embarcadero Brewing National City’s first brewery?  No ordinances yet so they are having to create them.  Once they get the licenses, they plan is to contract brew at Bay Bridge Brewing, initially packaging exclusively in kegs with a plan to start bottling soon after.
  • The Bell Marker will open in the old San Diego Beer Co. location downtown.  Estimating January 22 and their brewer is Noah Regnery from Pizza Port San Clemente.  Artisanal Brewers Collective owns it as well as other LA spots. Tony Yanow is part of ABC, he is from Golden Road.

Episode 146: Alpine Beer Co. Tasting Room Live Show

(NSFW)

We are back with our second live show in two weeks.  This time we make the trek over to the Alpine Beer Co. tasting room and are joined by Shawn McIlhenney and Dylan Brown.  We are very appreciative of the fans that came out during a day and night where San Diego actually had weather.  The drive to Alpine is not one that is easily made when rain is pouring down on you.

Interview

Since we have been out to Alpine before, we skip all the introductory questions and get straight to what beers are currently flowing and which one are being brewed.   Beagle has a nagging question about a rumor he’s bee hearing about from the industry.  Assuming they are not pulling our leg, this rumor confirmation should make a lot of people happy.  We wonder if much has changed in the last year since our last show.  That leads to a talk about the history of the tasting room and the brewery as there is a lot of history inside those walls.  Beagle then asks about how they came to be a brewery that utilizes the number of hops they do, but not one that focuses on IBUs and bitterness.  We delve into the Green Flash purchase and how that looks like from the inside another year later.  Beagle wants to get into a few of the special releases but we decide to take a break in between.

After the break, where we enjoyed some Duet cupcakes from Esthela and continue the talk about the rare beers Alpine produces.  We find that not all the special release come out well, depending on how long the beer is aged.  Esthela asks if Alpine has any collaborations coming up.  The conversation moves into the current state of the industry and they feel Alpine is safe from any major changes.  Somehow we find out that Helm’s was purchased by someone, but that someone is mainly going to be producing weed soda.  We wrap the show up with some future events at Alpine and the news, including a very important message about the creation of CANCER FIGHTER.
