Episode 161: Women in #SDBeer

(NSFW)

Esthela takes the reigns on this show and we have our first all-women show.  While we have had many women guests on the show before, we wanted to see what happens when the men are gone.  While Greg was there to make sure all the technical stuff was taken care of, he enjoyed just sitting back and listening to the panel for once.

Interview

The panel was comprised of:

Since Angela has to leave fairly soon after we started recording, we wanted to give her the chance to talk about what It’s All About the Kids is all about.  There is an event coming up called Champagne and Purses where the proceeds will be going to It’s All About the Kids, for tickets you can go to www.ChampagneAndPurses.com.

Esthela starts the rest of the show off by wondering where everyone got their start and how they entered the craft beer industry.  From there the conversation goes towards how they feel about the industry and how the scene has changed since they started.  Esthela moves the topic to sexism in the industry and how the panelists have dealt with it and how they think it can change going forward.

The panelists talk about some events coming up:

  • Karl Strauss – Art & Amps – Free – Starts May 19th
  • Iron Fist – Hops on the Harbor – $74.50 – April 27th
  • Machete Beer House – Pizza Port & 3 Floyds Shredd Session – Cinco de Mayo Insurgente tap takeover
  • Hoppy Beer Hoppy Life – Rhythm and Brews – $45-$65 – May 5th
  • MishMash – SD CityBeat Burger Week – $10 combo – May 4th-12th

Esthela wonders how people on the panel stay relevant.  With some brewers on the panel working in older breweries and other panelists owning their own businesses, there is a wide range of responses.  Laura asks a question about serving women patrons and how is it when there is a male bartender.  Esthela asks what beer they grab when they are not working.  That moves into a discussion of going to a place that has a nice atmosphere.  We finish up with a listener question.

Listener Question

Queso – So in the military higher ranked women are harder on the women that are just starting out, do you see that and if yes if you believe in equality why wouldn’t you be more welcoming?

Episode #160: 2018 Mission Valley Craft Beer and Food Festival

(NSFW)

We are back at the Mission Valley Craft Beer and Food Festival, an annual podcasting tradition.  Like most of the festivals run by PushPins Media, it was really laid back and flowed really well.  As with previous festivals, we were given the VIP time to go around and try the beers, spirits, and food that was being served.  Once General Admission came in, it was time to get to work!  We do want to warn you, at times this show is drunk and pointless.  Enjoy the show!

In the News

Tyson Blake – Chef and General Manager of O’Brien’s Pub

Just as we were getting into the news, Tyson from O’Brien’s Pub pops in.  We decided to drop the rest of the news (which we talked about in Episode 159 anyway) and get to the guest.  We wonder what dish he brought to hopefully go back-to-back with the best plate at the festival.  There is a beer dinner on May 20th with Second Chance Beer Co.  Tickets can be bought at the pub only.  Hint: There is a beer dinner with Eppig Brewing too on April 22nd, we are not sure if there are tickets left though.

Tyler Tucker – Head Brewer of Bitter Brothers Brewing

Tyler joins us to talk about how it was to be hired right before their second anniversary.  We wonder if Bitter Brothers is really a family atmosphere.  How did they treat him with their current lineup if beers?  We then delve into the Green Flash news, from a few weeks ago, but what is interesting is we start wondering who will take over the Cellar 3 location.  We finish it up with some future events for Bitter Brothers.

Alex Van Horne – Owner and Head Brewer of Intergalactic Brewing & Larry Monasakanian – Sales Guru of Fall Brewing & Aaron Mayer of What’s on Draft

The next guests on the show are Alex from Intergalactic and Larry from Fall.  We ask Alex how his Grand Reopening was and how he was able to stay afloat instead of selling the brewery.  After drinking some beers from our own coolers, Aaron Mayer from What’s on Draft joins us.  Most of this segment is talking about the beers we open up.

Abraham and Jesus – Creative Creature Brewing & Zach – Pariah Brewing

I swear we have a schedule of people that are supposed to come on the show during festivals like this.  We jump right in with the guys from Creative Creature Brewing and talk about where they are opening and when.  We get our scheduled guest on to talk about Pariah Brewing and their latest release, Mamba Mode.  We wonder how they clean the draft lines.  We get into some future events for Pariah.  Immediately we switch over to our next guest.

Dylan Brown – Alpine Beer Co. & Rudy – Craft Beerd

We try to interview Dylan, but hilarity ensues.  Eventually, we do finally talk to Dylan and since this was before the foreclosure, we talk about it as a good thing for San Diego.  We ask Dylan about what else is going on at Alpine.  It seems to be a trend of this show, we are joined out of the blue by Rudy Pollorena Jr. of Craft Beerd.

Karen Barnett – Owner of Small Bar

We come back with a first-time guest of the show.  Brian is a frequent customer of Small Bar and has a lot of questions for Karen.  Most of the questions are about her food options, including Steak Night.  Esthela asks how the beer list is chosen.  We can’t have Karen on the show without having her talk about her stance on the number of tasting rooms and bars around town.  Specifically, she talks mostly about Normal Heights and North Park, but it isn’t the only spot in San Diego that is packed with beer spots.

Michela Potenza – Brewer of Hoppy People

A special bonus interview is Michela who is a brewer from Hoppy People in Switzerland.  She happened to be in town attending the festival.  We ask her how much she brews and how the culture is out in Switzerland.  We were very happy to have her on the show to get a perspective on another region of the world.

Episode 159: The Green Flash and Alpine Beer Saga

(NSFW)

Oh boy!  The plan was to take this week off since we had a show in the tank ready to go.  Well, the San Diego craft beer world had a different idea for us.  By now most of you should have heard about the foreclosure of GFBC Inc. which includes all of Green Flash Brewing Co.‘s assets along with all of Alpine Beer Co.‘s assets.  Normally, Green Flash and Alpine would be no more and those assets would be auctioned off or sold to another entity.  Well, they were sold very quickly, almost immediately to a new entity, WC IPA LLC, which bought them from Camerica bank that gave GFBC Inc. it’s $20M loan for the Virginia facility.  WC IPA LLC now owns the brands Green Flash Brewing and Alpine Beer Co.

Getting back to the show, we start the show with a surprise guest, Pat McIlhenney, the founder of Alpine Beer Co. and make sure to go through the fact as we know them.  After confirming the details, we then ask Pat his experience during this transition.  We end the interview with one very important question that should make craft beer geeks very happy.

We take a break and come back to the opinion and speculation portion of the show.  You’ll hear Brian’s thoughts on the situation as well as all four hosts of the show, Greg, Esthela, and Travis.  After we go through how we really feel about the handling of the transitions, we get into the news topics and close out the show.

BUT WAIT!  That’s not all, we recorded an after-hours portion of the show since there was still a lot of opinions to be had.  We are joined by Noah Scoville from Stone Brewing, Carlos Lee of Craft Beer Me SD, and Adam Alonso & Mike Dion from SD Beer Dudes.  These guys came down to check out the main show, so we figured we would get them on the mic for this important news topic and see what they think of it all.

In the News

  • Duck Foot opening restaurant.  550 Park Boulevard, few blocks East of Half Door.  Food will be gluten-free. Opens in May.
  • OAW closes (again)  The new owners decided not to hassle with the lawsuits and possible legal action against them.  **We had said Papa Marce’s Cerveceria took over OAW, they did not, they took over the old Wiseguy location.  Papi Chulo Brew Works was the brewery that opened as OAW for a short while.  We apologize for the confusion.**
  • Fallbrook Brewing is closing Sunday, April 15th.
  • Update on Tom’s mother.  She did not make it, but the bills still need to be paid.  We did make our donation from the April Patreon pledges, but we know it’s small in comparison to the loss.
  • Lightning Brewery is rebranding and holding a re-grand opening between April 19th and 22nd.

Episode 158: White Labs

(NSFW)

It’s education time!  Mainly all about yeast and what it can do for your beer.  We are joined this week by Erik Fowler from White Labs.  Erik is the Education and Engagement Curator which entails a lot of jobs.  We hope even the non-brewer listener will enjoy this show.

Interview

We find a little bit out about what White Labs is and why they have a tasting room in San Diego attached to their business.  We also delve into Erik’s passion for craft beer and find out what his role is at White Labs.  What is a yeast bank, does it look like Jurrasic Park?  After talking about some of the beers we were drinking we take a break.

After the break, we wonder if the yeast is the most important component of beer.  We also ask if brewers should build out their own labs for yeast propagation.  After talking more about how White Labs makes beer and what it is used for, the conversation moves into their newest product called PurePitch®.  Brian wonders if FrankenStout is going to come back.  Then we end the show as we normally do, with the news.

In the News

  • Latchkey Brewing looks like they want to open on April 13th (Friday!!!) and will have Anthony Beach (Faultline, GF, BP) as head brewer.  Also in the mix will be Julia Mallon, who managed tasting rooms for BP and Cutwater, and Co-founder Gerald Dollente also was in charge of brewery production at BP.
  • The Brigantine and Hodad’s getting into brewing.  Ketch Brewing will be in a vacant warehouse space at its corporate headquarters at 7889 Ostrow Street in Kearny Mesa.  The West coaster has more info here.
  • More on the Green Flash closure of Virginia Beach.  We did not talk about Cellar 3 as we did not know it was closing when we recorded this show.
  • Brewers Association released overall industry numbers today. We now have 6,372 craft breweries in the USA, up 16% over 2016. Although the closing rate is only 2.6%, that is significantly higher than ‘16. Great quote from Bart Watson, chief economist from the BA – “Beer lovers want to support businesses that align with their values and are having a positive impact on their local communities and our larger society,” added Watson. “That’s what small and independent craft brewers are all about. The ability to seek beers from small and independent producers matters.”
