Episode 157: Longship’s first can release collaboration with Global Conservation Force

(NSFW)

We have a special extra episode for you this week!  We were invited to go to Longship Brewery’s first can release.  It is a Kölsch that was a collaboration brew with Global Conservation Force.  The goal of the collaboration was to brew something the workers of GCF could drink while they are saving animals from poachers in Africa.  The name of the beer is Wildlife Guardian and the beer on draft at the brewery and go-to cans should still be available as of the release of this show.

Interview

We start the show off with Dan Jachimowicz from Longship and Mike Veale from Global Conservation Force.  We learn a little bit about what GCF stands for and their role in helping keep endangered animals away from extinction.  We get into how the two companies came to do this collaboration and what its purpose is.  Finally, we let you know how you can get some of the beer.

We take a break and come back with Joel Geier from Brewery Travels and Sommbeer.  He has been able to travel the US and chronicle his beer travels on Twitter and via the Sommbeer website.  During the interview, we ask about places he wants to go in the US for beer as well as places he has already gone to in San Diego.  We finish it up with his thoughts on “big beer” like Ballast Point and Saint Archer.

After another break, we are joined by Mike Dion of SD Beer Dudes.  He is part of the group who does photography, social media, and finds ways to help breweries while also helping non-profits.  We discuss some brewery faux pas with labeling.  Then we get into the heartbreaking news of Green Flash.

In the News

  • Green Flash is closing down and auctioning off the Virginia brewery.  You can read more about this here and here.

Episode 156: Troy Johnson and David Martin from San Diego Magazine

(NSFW)

Troy and David are back on the show!  Wait a minute, they haven’t been on the show before!  It all depends on who you ask, we recorded with them a few weeks back but the show did not come out to the satisfaction of all of us.  We decided to give them another chance and we are very happy we did, the show turned out amazing.  Troy and David are from San Diego Magazine and both of them are on the Happy Half Hour Podcast along with Erin Chambers Smith, and Archana Ram.

Interview

Since we know Troy has no problem filling a show with his words, we start off by asking David what he does for the magazine.  Up next is Troy’s history, not only with the magazine but with Food Network, Fox Rox, and the Padres.  We wonder what Troy’s favorite food moments have been for him so far.  After getting more into Troy’s Food Network story, we open up a few beers from listeners.  Esthela wonders which two breweries David has as his best.  We end this part of the show with Troy talking about Bobby Flav and Iron Chef.

After the break, we come back to a new listener beer and we are joined by Travis Hudson.  We talk about what’s going on with Tap Craft (sort of) and go into sour beers and yeast propagation.  To get back on track we ask Troy what his three favorite restaurants are right now.  We give David a similar question and ask him what are his three favorite beers right now.  Then onto our closing segments.

Episode 155: Run with a Machete and you’ll Fall on Gordon!

(NSFW)

What happens when a scheduled show falls through the cracks?  You call on friends to come over and make it all better.  We are so happy to be joined on this show by Larry Monasakanian of Fall Brewing, Doug Hasker of Gordon Biersch, and Eddie Trejo of Machete Beer House.  We are also joined for a short time by a fan of the show, Michael Scott from La Buena Cheve podcast.

We start off with Michael and Larry on the show and we delve into Larry’s beer past.  We don’t get too deep when Eddie shows up and we spot Doug in the crowd and convince him to come on the show for a bit.  Doug is one of the brewers that really knows how to brew a lager, so it is very apropos that he is there while we drink Fall’s Rise Above.  We wonder what breweries in San Diego are making good lagers.  We then move the conversation back over to Eddie.  Esthela wonders how Eddie started his beer drinking and how Machete got started.

After a break, we come back with a new beer and talk about sales.  Since we have a salesperson and a bar owner on the same show, we are able to see the sales process from both experiences.  That moves into a conversation about tap handles and grocery store space.  Eddie talks about how things are different now after being open for three years from when he first opened.  Eddie and Esthela talk about a beer pairing dinner on March 26 where all the chefs are women.  Tickets can be purchased here.  We crack open a few beers and some ice cream too.  While talking about coffee and beer, we open up what would be classified as a pastry stout, Burgeon’s Glazed Imperial Stout.

In the News

  • Longship Brewery has partnered with Global Conservation Force (GCF) to brew a collaboration beer designed to support Anti-Poaching Units (APUs) around the world.  Collaboration beer, Wildlife Guardian, will be launched on March 24 3-9PM. It’s citrusy kölsch, light in body but rich in flavor, qualities are specifically chosen to honor rangers overseas working all day in the heat. Greg and Esthela will be there recording for part of the release.

Episode 154: 2018 SD Homebrew Festival and Competition

(NSFW)

It may seem like déjà vu, however, Episode 154 is from the 2018 San Diego Homebrew Festival and Competition.  Last week you heard from the 2017 festival and this week we are very happy to give you more homebrewers.  We start the show off with a voicemail and the news so that, after a short break, we come back with the exciting stuff.

We are first joined by Jose Alcantar and Paul Silva from their homebrew team called Battle Brewing.  They discuss their homebrewing history and then we get into their brewing equipment and process.  As usual, we ask them what beers got them into craft beer.  That question turns into a surprising homebrew clone of the beer they mention.

After another break, we come back with Michael Lettieri from his homebrew company Fallback Option.  We learn more about the name of his brewery and the names of the beers.  We ask Michael what his entrance into craft beer, but we mainly get into what he drinks while he brews.  Brian wonders what the process of brewing his Softcore Cinematographer, a tart sour ale with raspberries.

Another break, another homebrew team.  We are joined by Brandon Holt and Kevin Holt, a father/son duo.  While we loved their hazy IPA, it was not one of the winners.  We found out the first duo we interviewed ended up winning most of the awards.  Back to these two, we ask how their hazy IPA was made and find out some of the different variations they have made.  We find out they are members of QUAFF.  We wonder if they are going pro or not and then find out what they drink during brewing.

After the final break, we come back with Darrel Brown who was “Best in Show” in 2017.  He is the owner of Savagewood Brewing.  We ask how he opened as compared to what we talked about the last time we talked with him.  We wonder what has been the biggest surprise opening up as he did, taking over an existing brewery.

Episode 153: 2017 SD Homebrew Fest & In The News

(NSFW)

Since the show we recorded did not come out to our standards, we reached into the vault and pulled out an unreleased show.  This episode is from the 2017 San Diego Homebrew Festival and Competition.  We first talked to Sean Thompson and Doug Brown.  Sean talks about his cider that was entered and Doug talks about what beers he likes to brew.  Of course, we ask what their intro in craft was, but since we have a cider maker on the show, it’s not just beer.  We finish out with some QUAFF news and events.

After the break, we come back with Darrel Brown who was “Best in Show.”  If that name sounds familiar, he is the owner of Savagewood Brewing.  We talk about how he was doing at the time.  Since we have recorded this show, Savagewood ended up taking over the old O’Sullivan Bros. spot in Scripps Ranch.

After another break, we throw you to the end of the show we recorded at Pariah Brewing with Troy Johnson and David Martin of San Diego Magazine.  For this part, we talk about a few beers we had, get into the news, and then end the show.
