Episode 144: Smells Like Burgeon!

(NSFW)

This show was recorded on August 21st, 2017 and released to our Patrons on September 15th, 2017.  Since Beagle is on vacation, we wanted to release this as our last episode of 2017 for all our listeners.  We’ll catch you all next year with new episodes!

We wanted to give some love to our Patrons and decided to start with a special episode.  We put together 11 beers, 10 hazy and one not hazy (for a palate cleanser) for a few Patrons (and Travis Hudson) to drink blindly.  We are joined by the aforementioned Travis Hudson (indiebeerluv619), Ray (craftbeeray), Brian (0bscured), and Roger (xomegagold).

We wanted to see what would happen if beer drinkers rate beers based on only taste and the look of the beer, not based on labeling or the brewery who brews it.  The participants did not know the beers until the very end, however, they were given score sheets to help them with the appearance of the beers and to write down flavor profiles.  The scores they gave the beers were based on the Untappd scoring, 1-5.

If you want to see the beers, click here.

Episode 143: 2018 Beer Predictions

(NSFW)

We recorded Episode 143 right after 142 when we were at Intergalactic.  We are joined again by Noah Scoville from Stone Brewing, Ian Cheesman, and Travis Hudson to go over our 2018 beer predictions for San Diego.

2018 Predictions

Greg: There will be consolidation in #SDBeer in 2018.  Some bigger brewery like Stone, Grene Flash, Coronado

Travis: A brewery is going to open and their name will start with either a U, X, Y, or Z.  In addition, there will be a brewery opening up with a direction in their name.  Lastly, the will be a brewery opening up with a numerical name.  Possibly a four worded named brewery.

Ian: The release of specialty cans will increase, but less of them will be hazy IPAs.

Brain: Milkshake IPAs will explode in San Diego.

Noah: The 22oz. bomber will drastically reduce in numbers as a sales vessel and/or completely be gone by the end of the year.

Noah: More collaborations between breweries and festivals like Collabapalooza.

Noah: Something about Avery, but Beagle cut him off and went on a tangent.

Brian: Someone in San Diego will have the balls and release a weed beer and (may) get busted for it.

Ian: The rise of the non-adjunct stout.  As well as the rise of the barleywine.

Travis: Continue his streak of not drink a pumpkin beer and his streak of co-host of the year.

Travis: Crowler options will be better in 2018.  Better machinery will allow for a wider range of crowlers.

Ian: San Diego will have its first sexual harassment sex scandal.  In addition, Full Body Brewing will change its logo.

Travis: Clear the air of all the horrible, sexist beer names in San Diego beer.

Ian: San Diego will win more awards in non-IPA categories in national competitions.

Brian: More flavored brown ales.

Episode 142: Noah Scoville from Stone Brewing

(NSFW)

Intro

Ready for a sour show, or at least a show that starts with sours?  We are joined again by Ian Cheesman and Travis Hudson to help drink all these sour beers, hint: Ian and Travis aren’t sour drinkers but they power through it pretty well.  The reason we have sour beers on the show is that our guest in this show is Noah Scoville from Stone Brewing.  He is the Lead Indoctrination Specialist at Stone.  One of the reasons Noah wanted to come on the show was to bring Stone’s first sour, their Mission Warehouse Sour with Apricots.

Interview

Noah talks about his job at Stone and a little history of the job.  We open up the sour and talk about it and learn more about how this sour came to be.  As we are talking we open up another beer, The Highbinder from Societe.  That beer came from the Sore Eye Sudsmas food drive where Beagle and everyone who came was able to bring in over 5600 pounds of food.  We found some a few really cool statistics about the brewery in our backyard and how much people visit it as tourists. We also learn more about Stone and the facilities they have not just here in San Diego, but Berlin and Virginia.  We crack open Toolbox’s Frosted Very Vanilla Milk Shake IPA and wonder why these beers are so popular.  We get back to Noah and ask more about the tours and then get into his start in craft beer.  We then open up North Park’s Blend of Many and praise Kelsey since he makes such great beers.  We move the conversation to beer freshness and how Stone is in a very good position to make sure the entire US and even Europe can get the freshest possible beer.  While this is a shorter show, the next episode is recorded right after this one, so you will hear Ian, Travis, and Noah in Episode 143 as well to talk about our 2018 Predictions.

Episode 140: Just the Two of Us

(NSFW)

News and Topics

We have not done a show with just Brian and Greg for a long time.  Earlier in the night, we were interviewed by the Lucha Undead podcast (Twitter) so we decided to record this show with just the two of us.  We start the show off with a beer from Bottle Logic called Titan of Tokyo and then talk about the beer a little bit.  From there we get into a few of the other beers we drank before starting the show and that leads directly into talking more about Beach Grease brewing and what we feel are the requirements of opening a brewery are in today’s market.  That leads to more discussion about other new breweries coming up in the next year or so.  We bring up SD TapRoomKairoa Brewing Company, aka Long Cloud, Gravity Heights, Fourpenny House, Depot Springs, and Julian Brewing.

We take a break and come back to the news of Avery Brewing and it’s sale of 30% to Mahou San Miguel.  Greg then talks about his Instagram post that got some negative feedback as it looked like a paid advertisement and less like a normal photo.  The last topic of the show is a tweet by ChewYourBeer about an Alpine Hoppy Birthday he found with the Best By date of May 2016.  Green Flash did respond, but we discuss what customers and breweries should do when “shelf turds” are found.
