Episode #138: Rouleur Brewing Company

(NSFW)

Back during San Diego Beer Week, we did a live interview with Rawley Macias from Rouleur Brewing Company.  If you are not aware, Rouleur is one of the breweries that is leasing out the Brewery Igniter program at their Carlsbad location.  Their neighbor was Wiseguy brewing, who unfortunately closed five months into their lease.  We will talk about that eventually in the show.  Meanwhile, we start the show off with how Rawley got into craft beer and started up the brewery.  Then we get into the big elephant in the room, how is the process of applying for, building, and taking possession of a Brewery Igniter space.

After the long discussion about his location, we take a short break to get new beers and come back with Beagle talking about Sweepeur.  That segues into what Rouleur’s style is, what beers they started with, and how they have changed since opening.  We go through the specifications of the system they have and talk about how much he is producing currently.  Greg sent a few Rouleur beers to listeners of the show and received some feedback.

Listener Questions

Olaf Is Berserker – Ask them why Puncheur isn’t in cans yet. Such a good beer!

Padres Jagoff – Is it exciting for them that a majority of recent gwynntelligence.com posts have been written at Rouleur?

Episode #137: #SDBeer All-stars Collaboration with Longship

(NSFW)

We were very honored to be asked to collaborate on a beer with Longship Brewery.  This was dubbed the #SDBeer All-star flight and we were not the only ones included.  Longship asked Craft Beer Me, Hoppy Beer Hoppy Life, and Craftbeeray to all make a beer and then the public would vote for the winner.  The beers served were:

  • Noble Savage – Hoppy Table Beer from Hoppy Beer Hoppy Life
  • SMaSH Fund – SMaSH IPA with Vienna and Chinook from San Diego BeerTalk Radio
  • Persephone’s Fate – Belgian Saison with Palmagrante, Ginger, and Orange from Craft Beer Me
  • Cucumber Gose from Craftbeeray

During the show, we interview Carlos from Craft Beer Me, Fede from Hoppy Beer Hoppy Life, and Dan from Longship.

In the News

  • The City of San Diego invited local brewers to take part in a ceremony honoring them and their organizational backbone, the San Diego Brewers Guild, when District 6 Councilmember Chris Cate officially declared November 7, 2017, as “20th Anniversary of the Brewers Guild Day” in San Diego. Receiving a City of San Diego proclamation is a celebratory event; a moment where the City pauses to recognize the positive work of influential organizations like the San Diego Brewers Guild.  It means that the Brewers Guild is part of San Diego’s history.
  • Latchkey Brewing taking over Acoustic Ales’ Mission Brewery Plaza facility.  Acoustic is looking at Carlsbad for a new location.  Take over in Spring of 2018.  Overhaul of the entire brewery to match Latchkey’s branding.  They will also construct a full-scale kitchen so Latchkey can offer light breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack options as added enticements. Private event space will be offered as well.
  • Stone Mission Warehouse Sour – Apricot – 4-pack of 11.2oz bottles – $32. Max four 4-packs each.  500 pounds of apricots squeezed into just four barrels of beer throughout different stages in the 18-month process.

Episode #136: Stone Farking Wheaton w00tstout Vertical

(NSFW)

It’s that time of the year, it’s San Diego Beer Week!  We wanted to start off the week with something sessionable and low-key….Ya right!  We have all the Stone Farking Wheaton w00tstout beers starting with 1.0 also known as the 2013 version and ending with the w00tstout brewed in Stone’s Berlin brewery.  If you are unaware of w00tstout, it is a yearly released beer during Comic-con that is a collaboration between Drew Curtis, the founder of fark.com, Wil Wheaton, actor, geek, and homebrewer, and Greg Koch, the co-founder of Stone.  The 2.0 version did not have Greg Koch’s help but did include Aisha Tyler in his place.

We start off the show right away with the 2013 version.  Once we talk a little about it, we delve into 2.0 also known as the 2014 version which included a slightly different recipe.  During the drinking of 2.0, we get into the topic of trends we noticed in 2017.  While we drink 3.0 and 4.0, we get into the heaviest topic of the night, sexism in craft beer.  After a long conversation about sexism, we talk a little about 4.0 and then immediately open up 5.0.  The next topic is if we think beer geeks are still interested in verticals or are they only into the new, shiny can releases.  We open up the German version of w00tstout and get into the news and one last topic about places you don’t tell people because you want it to remain a secret.

All the w00tstout beers

  • 1.0 – 13% – 07/15/2013 – Rye, wheat malt and pecans and partially aged in bourbon whiskey barrels.
  • 2.0 – 13.5% – 07/14/2014 – Rye, wheat malt and pecans and partially aged in bourbon whiskey barrels. Added stone-ground chocolate from Aisha Tyler.
  • 3.0 – 13% – 07/13/2015 – Rye, wheat malt and pecans and partially aged in bourbon whiskey barrels. Blended with one-year BA 2.0.
  • 4.0 – 13% – 07/11/2016 – Rye, wheat malt and pecans and partially aged in bourbon whiskey barrels.
  • 5.0 – 13% – 07/10/2017 – Rye, wheat malt and pecans and partially aged in bourbon whiskey barrels.
  • ZÜPER MAGIK W00TSTOUT – 10% – 09/21/2017 – Rye, wheat malt, pecans, and almonds and partially aged in bourbon whiskey barrels.

In the News

  • Derek Gallanosa has announced the brewery project he is a part of in NorCal.  Based in Rocklin (north of Sacramento) Moksa Brewing Co. will be Derek’s new home.  Cory Meyer and Derek will be the brewers there.  December-January opening, around 1,000 barrels next year, topping out at 2,500 at max.
  • As mentioned in the last episode, Second Chance has opened up their tasting room in North Park.

Episode #136.5: The W00t Stout (Before) Aftershow

(NSFW)

When we finished Episode 136, our w00tstout vertical show, no one wanted to leave yet.  There was plenty of things our friends wanted to talk about so we kept rolling.  Please enjoy this little wacky but still informative (before) aftershow!

After some back and forth about the beers we are drinking, we do eventually get to some topics.  Hansen wants to know what San Diego Beer Week events are people excited for.  After a little more joking around, the conversation does turn serious when we talk about Barrio Logan’s gentrification and if the companies entering are helping or hurting the local community.
