Episode #135: Bay City Brewing

(NSFW)

In this show, we headed over to Bay City Brewing.  We are joined by their co-founder, co-owner Ben Dubois, M.D., and their head brewer Chris West.  Bay City has been around for around two years and is the brewery to brew 72 and Hoppy, which has become a very controversial beer and has been mislabeled as San Diego’s “official” beer by the Tourism Board.  We definitely get into that conversation later in the show.

Interview

We start off with Ben and wonder why he opened up Bay City.  We wonder if their close proximity to Modern Times is a benefit or hindrance.  We can’t do a show without asking the most asked question, how did they get into craft beer and what was their first craft beer.  We ask how they separate themselves from the other 140+ breweries around town.  That morphs into a conversation about the drinkability of beer and how they brew their beers with that in mind.

After a short break to fill up our glasses, we come back to talk about their best selling beers.  After a discussion about style guidelines for beers, we wonder what they are doing during San Diego Beer Week.  We find out they will have their first bottled beer that will be available only at the brewery on November 9th.  Brian wants to know more about the statistics of the brewhouse.  We end the interview with 72 and Hoppy and the controversy around that.

Episode #134: Seven Caves Spirits

(NSFW)

In this week’s show, we are joined by Geoff Longenecker, the founder of Seven Caves Spirits.  Since this is part 1 of our collaboration with Alt Brew Show, we are joined by Josh Hembree of Setting Sun Sake as a guest co-host.  Once you are done with this show, please head over the listen to the continuation on Alt Brew Show.

Interview

We wonder how and why he decided to start up a distillery.  We get into his brew system and how it differs from a brewery’s system.  There is a small aside on the myth that brewers and distillers drink all day long while brewing.  We have an update on the fire at SD Distillery and their current status.  Afterwards, Geoff talks about the first San Diego Distillers Guild festival.  We wonder what were the two rums we were poured and talk more about his process of making it.  During the conversation, we find out how much liquid is wasted.  Brian opens up an Oud Beersel Oude Kriek Vieille as we talk about Belgian beers.  We then delve into his future batches which then moves onto a consistency conversation.

After a break, we come back to Geoff talking about the stainless steel workshop next door and being in a bonded warehouse.  We find out more about some of the rums and scotches Geoff has in his collection.  Then we delve into the news and other segments.

Episode #133: If You’re Not Willing to Smell It, Then I’m Not Willing to Fill It!

(NSFW)

Are you ready for some of the best people in the beer industry?  You see them all the time when you visit your favorite brewery.  They make sure your experience doesn’t suck when you are there.  Of course, we are talking about the beertenders and tasting room managers!  We have a full panel of the “Front of the House” folks who serve you.  We are joined by Marta Swanson from Second Chance Beer Co., Shannon Lynnette from Burning Beard Brewing, Jacob Nikos from Small Bar and Societe Brewing, and Dylan Brown from Alpine Brewing Company.

Interview

First off, sit back and enjoy this show, there are a lot of ways this show goes.  As for the questions we actually ask, we start with the beers they all started with.  From there we wonder how they feel about the retail life and dealing with people.  We also ask what is it they do when someone comes in for the first time.  That morphs into how important it is how a bartender greets people compared to how a beertender greets people.

We take a break and come back in the middle of a joke.  We do get back on topic with a question on how can you correct someone who is talking to their friends but giving incorrect information about the industry.  We get into some of these beertenders’ special customers and how they treat them well.  What about party busses?  Does the Voice of San Diego Podcast Network know what they got when they asked us to join them?  We also get into the conversation of what is the appropriate pick-up window for online beer sales.  I wonder what do they look for when they hire a beertender.

Listener Questions

Andy Newbom – How can we move from asking “Whadda ya want!?” to more “Hi!  Have you had our X or Z before?” aka service rather than order taking.

Josh – What is a polite way to ask about clean draught lines?

ChewYourBeer

  • What’s the worst way of ordering a beer?
  • When I visit a brewery, I always pay cash, I tend to tip every time I order a pint, $1-2 bucks, is this ok, or should I tip at the end?
  • When I get an ”AWESOME” beertender, I tend to tip them personally (this is for you) & let them know they made my experience amazing, is this ok?

Episode #132: HopStash by Craft Beerd

(NSFW)

We are so happy to have this exclusive news on our show!  Many of you know Rudy Pollorena Jr. from Craft Beerd.  Well, he is going through a major re-brand and his line of art and merchandise will now be known as HopStash by Craft Beerd.

Interview

We start by asking Rudy how things have been going since our last official show with him back in Episode 54, even though he did join us at MVCBF in Episode 109 as well.  We talk about evolving as an artist which then leads the first announcement about HopStash becoming the brand of choice from now on.  Then we learn of the second announcement that Rudy will be doing a Kickstarter to fund this new collection.  The third announcement is that HopStash will be a monthly subscription service where every month a new shirt will arrive at your door and those pieces will be brand new artwork and will never come back afterward.  There are different levels of the subscription that you can purchase.  During the Kickstarter your options will be:

  • $20 – Exclusive, One-Time artwork T-Shirt
  • $27 – Exclusive, One-Time artwork T-Shirt, Pin, and Sticker (Rad Edition)
  • $40 – Exclusive, One-Time artwork T-Shirt for you and a friend
  • $54 – Exclusive, One-Time artwork T-Shirt, Pin, and Sticker (Rad Edition) for you and a friend
  • $55 – Exclusive, One-Time artwork T-Shirt for three months
  • $74 – Exclusive, One-Time artwork T-Shirt, Pin, and Sticker for three months (Rad Edition)
  • $220 – Exclusive, One-Time artwork T-Shirt for 13 months (one month free)
  • $350 – HopStash Membership for 13 months (Rad Edition) – The T-Shirt, Pin, and Sticker for one year.  Also, first access to “collectibles” which will be very limited before any of the other members can purchase.
  • $425 – HopStash Sponsorship for one year – Any non-brewery business can pledge at this level to be added to the monthly flyers that are put in the boxes with the subscriptions.  All business are subject to approval.
  • $775 – Rad Brewery Collaboration – Breweries will purchase this to be one of the first to have the collectibles created for them.  Due to the donation structure that Rudy has put into place, the $775 will be donated to charity by the end of the program.

During the discussion of the Kickstarter, we do talk about the BA numbers that were released about donations of breweries versus revenue.

Episode #131: The Smörgåsbord show!

(NSFW)

In this week’s show, we are all over the place due to some last minute changes.  We are joined by Rudy Pollorena Jr from Craft Beerd.  We start this Smörgåsbord show with talking about Sierra Nevada Pale Ale.  Drinking a classic beer automatically makes us talk about the current IPA culture in San Deigo and how this pale stands the test of time.  We rant a little about a new Goose Island commercial and the new “four ingredients” Budweiser commercial.  During the rant, therealmatatat texts us and we find out there may a new tap room that has opened up from a brewery in Santa Clara, Golden State Brewery.  If our listeners know anything about them, please let us know.  We then talk more about our collaboration beer with Longship Brewing.  We then get to the news.

  • NEW BREWERY ALERT!  Attitude Brewing Company will be opening in Barrio Logan on 1985 National Avenue (same building as Iron Fist.)  Kurt Bach wanted to open in Portland, but it is more saturated than San Diego per capita.  Also opening Attitude Gourmet Wraps, Burgers and Beers and plans on more locations in the future.  Hopes to open in December.
  • NEW BREWERY ALERT! Northern Pine Brewing located at 326 N Horne St in Oceanside.  From their site – NPB is a brewery built around the passion for quality craft beer, being outdoors, giving back, and sharing what you love with people. They have brewed beer and it is in tanks and stated they are mere weeks away from opening.
  • San Diego Distillery has had a fire.  News reports claim $300k damage and it seems the fire started at or near one of the stills.  We wish Trent and his family some good vibes and we hope to have more information soon.  There is a GoFundMe page here to help.
  • We have a race to see who will be the next brewery to open – Deft and Wild Barrel both have beers in the tank and are about to open – social media suggests that Wild Barrel may open September 30th. They also have a bottle club you can join – $300 gets you 20 bottles!
  • Sore Eye Sudsmas is coming up!  The goal this year will be 5,000 pounds of food.  It will be at Societe again and they will be releasing some really cool specials if the goal is met.  You can RSVP for this event on Facebook and the date is December 9th.  See you all there!
