Episode #130: Circle Nine Brewing & TapCraft

(NSFW)

We have a double dose of interviews for you in this episode.  To give you a little behind the scenes on this show, we wanted to interview TapCraft but we wanted a really cool place to do the interview.  When we asked owner Michael Peacock about where to do that show, he suggested one of the breweries where he installed their tap system, Circle Nine Brewing.  We thought it was a great idea, now we can feature not only TapCraft but also the newest brewery in the Kearney Mesa area, Circle Nine.

Interview

We start the interview with Circle Nine.  We are joined by Darren Baker and Andrew Campbell who are both co-owners and brewers.  We wonder where their love of craft beer came and then go into how they plan on differentiating themselves from the rest of the industry.  This leads into a discussion about lagers and how they visited Japan and joined in on a 400-year old festival where they gained some of their notoriety.  Two of Beagle’s loves are construction and the program at SDSU, of course, we ask them how it was building the brewery and how the SDSU program helped them.  From there we ask them what trends they like and do not like, and of course the biggest trend today is the “haze craze.”  We take a short break and come back with Circle Nine to talk about some of their beers.  We end with some side conversations and then come back with TapCraft.

Now with TapCraft, we come back with Michael Peacock and Travis Hudson.  After the break, we are trying to remember who has graduated the SDSU craft beer program and where they are.  Once we are officially back, we wonder where Peacock got his love for craft beer and how he ended up teaching the draft systems class at SDSU.  During this, we find out all the different things that can be put through a draft system, one of them you might not believe it unless you heard it on here.  We get Peacock’s train of thought when he goes to a bar or brewery and then orders a beer.  That turns into a discussion of beer finance and a question for breweries and bars that asks the question of if they know how many pints of beer they are losing to incorrect pouring and too much foam.  Since there was some real world news with a lawsuit pertaining to cleaning a draft system, we do talk about that with Peacock.  You can read about this lawsuit here and here.

SD BeerTalk Short: In the News #2!

In the News:

  • Helm’s for sale, looking for $500k which buys everything, including the OB tasting room.
  • We’re doing a collaboration beer with Longship for SD Beer Week!  Once the beer is brewed, we will let you know when to come to Longship and vote for our beer!
  • Little Miss is indeed trying to lease their OB tasting room. It was found that during the permit process that the ABC, SDPD, a State Assembly member, and additional OB residents held private meetings without Little Miss representatives and made the decision that crime had risen (not true) and the cause was an increase of alcohol licenses and decided not to approve LM’s permit.  Sounds like no future tasting will be allowed as well.
    • Joe Lisica left Little Miss. Possibly for not coming on board with the current brewing strategy of LM.
  • Stone Brewing is now a fully national brand, they just entered West Virginia, marking availability in all 50 states.

Episode #129: Saturation of Craft Beer in San Diego, Part 2

(NSFW)

The Show

We are so happy to have recorded another panel of industry people to talk about the current saturation (or lack thereof) of craft beer in San Diego.  We are joined by:

Questions asked on the show

  • What are your thoughts on the current saturation of craft beer in San Diego?
  • Do you feel the overall current environment of the industry is a bubble that’s about to burst or a mature industry having a few struggles with its identity?
  • What do you think were the biggest factors to your success or failure?
  • What do you think about the recent boom in tasting rooms?
    • Do you think that is good for the industry in general?
  • Have you been encouraged by “The Rising Tide” of independence being important to consumers?
  • How much impact has “Big Beer” had in securing SKU and shelf space in retail establishments with their last five years of purchasing craft breweries?
    • Why are we not talking about the fact that ABInbev bought five percent of craft beer in the last three years?

Episode #128: Thr3e Punk Ales

(NSFW)

Even though our guest this show has been on the show twice before, this is the first time we’ve interviewed them at their brewery.  That’s right, Thr3e Punk Ales is finally open!  After a few years of contract brewing with Finest Made Ales (formerly Butcher’s Brewing) and delays from the city and other organizations like ABC and TTB, you can finally buy a pint.  Go find them down on Third Ave. in Downtown Chula Vista.

Interview

We are joined by Steve Garcia, Kevin Lewis, and Ivan Moldanado.  Since our friends over at Three B Zine did an interview with them already, we wanted to go another route.  We do ask a few questions just to break the ice.  After the questions, we get into a few games we have and the news.  We start the show with wondering how they are punk.  Since that seemed to not go anywhere, the actual first question is how they got into brewing and craft beer.  Brian ordered us some pizza from La Bella Pizza, so we take a quick break to eat.  After the break, we ask if they thought about any other location than Chula Vista.

Games!

Brian’s game:  Answer in Rhyme, answer the question by using rhymes.

  • This brewer ended his employment with 32 North.
  • How many punks are there?
  • This magical beer ingredient eats sugar and farts alcohol.
  • Who is the biggest, by production, independent brewery in San Diego County?
  • This type of beer souring is super fast, sometimes overnight.
  • This brewery just dropped “Street” from their name.
  • This device helps transfer beer from tank to tank.
  • In beer, this ingredient is used for bittering and antiseptic qualities.
  • The brewer used to work at Alesmith and Mikkeller and recently helped you MF’ers.
  • I (Brian) built the tasting room for this North Park brewery.
  • This guy is famous for wearing monkey shirts when he decides to wear a shirt.
  • It’s a season, it’s what happens when you trip, it’s the cheers of the San Diego brewing industry, and that MF’er used to work there (points to Ivan.)
  • This brewery makes Mongo.
  • This is the fastest craft brewery packaging.
  • This is the brewery that purchased Alpine.
  • This brewery is on Morena Blvd., near Costco, and features a giant, lighted, bright orange sign.
  • We did a lot more with the money than just flying an airplane about this brewery.
  • The brewery recently released the official beer of San Diego.
  • This brewery is in El Cajon and features one of the best tasting room managers in the biz.
  • Bonus question:  This Brewer has been with Karl Strauss for 18 years.

Greg’s game:  OR Game from Dorktown Podcast and The Perfect Pour

  • Sample:  Double IPA OR Triple IPA
  • Keg Party OR Bottle Share
  • Pumpkin Beers OR Christmas Beers
  • Carne Asada Chips OR Carne Asada Fries
    • Favorite Mexican spot?
  • If forced to go to a mall, Chula Vista Mall OR Plaza Bonita

In the News!

  • NEW BREWERY ALERT! Kairoa Brewing Company (was Long Cloud) will be opening up in Mid-2018.  4601 Park Blvd, corner of Park & Madison.  Owners from New Zealand and Red House Pizza from next door will handle kitchen in Kairoa.  More info here.
  • Oeuvre Artisan Ales will be contract brewing inside Intergalactic.  Ted & Franchesca Apollo will be brewing line of beers fermented with Brettanomyces.  More info here.
  • Green Flash is going to Lincoln, Nebraska.  Bought the brewery from Ploughshare Brewing Co. who closed in July.
  • What’s on Draft will be syndicated on “DrnkTV” a LA-based station.
  • AB-InBev “The High End” eliminates around 400 jobs from around the US.  Being chalked up to redundancy; regional managers/sales/distribution let go.  Read more here and here.

Before we unplugged everything, I was talking with Steve and we realized there were a few things we didn’t talk about during the show.  I asked a listener question that then moved into Steve letting us know he does open for soccer and football games.  Also, we find out that crowlers are not available.

Episode #127: Birthday Princess (San Diego Bacon Fest 2017)

(NSFW)

It’s that time of the year again, San Diego Bacon Fest is upon us!  We are back at the festival, recording LIVE!  You get all the usual live shenanigans during this recording, high fives, surprise people on the mic, and random segues.  Luckily though, we have some great interviews with a few breweries and drink some really cool beers.  We start the show with the news.

After the news, we come back with a random interview.  Jeff from Brass Shots comes on and shows us his products.  While not made from actually used ammo, these shot glasses are machined to look like the casings for .45 ACP rounds.  After another break, we get into our brewery interviews.  We are joined by Dylan Brown and Dan Hacker from Alpine Beer Co., Brian Mitchell from Pariah Brewing, and super fan Matthew Garcia, aka therealmatatat in social media.  We ask about what’s up with Alpine and their Brewpub, ask what’s new at Pariah, and wonder why Matt is always in San Diego.

The next interview is Corey Esoldi from Bitter Brothers Brewery.  We wonder how their relationship is with Stone Distributing Co. as well as what events are coming up.  Bitter Brothers just started canning their beers, so we ask what is currently being canned.  During the interview, a few lively women showed up to give their opinion of Bacon Fest.  We are also joined by the Birthday Princess, it’s a guy.  We let him on to talk about Bacon Fest too.  Eventually, we are also joined by Travis Hudson who shows up a little late to the festival.  Travis breaks some new news that we did not know about.  Ballast Point is changing their packaging.  We do finally end the interview with Corey while we talk about the price of hops, the price of pints, and why we don’t see hop experimental numbers anymore.  We have one last break and close out the show.

In the News!

  • Modern Times is opening a brewery and tasting room in Portland, Oregon.  While it is exciting for MT to open this new location a few years earlier than expected, it is because The Commons Brewery will be leaving this location and may (or may not) remain brewing.  More information can be found in this article.
  • Derek Gallanosa, currently at Abnormal Beer Co. will be leaving Abnormal and starting a new brewery in Northern California.  We hate to lose him and his creativity, but he will be training his replacement.  More information can be found here and here.
  • Nick Ceniceros is no longer with 32 North Brewing.  We do not know what is next for him, but we are sure he will do good things.  No news article about it, just social media.
