Episode #117: Societe’s 5th Anniversary

(NSFW)

Societe Brewing celebrated its quinquennial anniversary on June 24th and we were there!  The folks at Societe were nice enough to invite us for the festival.  While last year Societe hosted The First Quadrennial Brewers’ Games, where different breweries competed in different events to win awards, this year’s festival was more traditional with unlimited beer and an added benefit of some really nice food and beer pairings.  After the festival, those who bought a ticket for the feast got themselves a five-course dinner which was an exclusive rare beer and food pairing.  The group tasked with the food pairings for both the Fest and the Feast was The Five Chef Societe, headed by Karl Prohaska and includes many of the top chefs in San Diego.

In the News!

  • Intergalactic Brewing is unsure of its future.  Alex knows the current business plan is not working well enough to give his family when they need to live.  Ideally, he would like to find investors to keep the doors open.  However, he is not opposed to selling the equipment or the company in full.  This change may happen in a few weeks or may happen in a few months, he is not sure.
  • AleSmith Brewing’s collab with Sublime, Sublime Mexican Lager (40oz. to Freedom,) will be pre-sold in Eventbrite for $9.99 for the 40oz. bottle on July 8th and picked up at the brewery on or after July 15th.  12oz. cans will be sold at the brewery and in stores on or after July 15th.
  • Coronado Brewing is building a 1,000 square foot kitchen at their Bay Ho location.  They want to offer a higher standard of food and make sure it is more consistent.  The kitchen will have countertop equipment and a double level pizza oven for items like paninis, pizza, and other bar-like foods.

Interview

We come back from the break with Karl Prohaska, the head chef at Kitchens for Good and The Five Chef Societe.  Karl gives the listeners a rundown of what The Five Chef Societe is and what the anniversary party “Feast” entails.  Karl goes over the food that was at the festival and feast.  We then get into what Karl is up to now, which is helping people who are having a rough time in life learn life skills like cooking, financial needs, and a lot more.

After another break, we are back with Doug from Societe.  After a visit from Bobby Mathews, Doug talks about the new beers they released for the anniversary party.  During the explanation of the beers, we have our first sacrifice of the day, at least one we saw.  Doug explains how they made their newest Farrel beer, The Thief, and he talks about flavors and what he thinks separates their Farrel beers from “sour” beers.  Finally, we ask Doug about the South African hop controversy and he gives the craft beer drinkers some very good advice.

During this break, we left the mics alone and Jeff from Burning Beard and Bobby Mathews who is infamous in the San Diego beer scene, get on the mics for some karaoke.  Eventually, Brian gets on the mic to transition the show to our final segments as the festival comes to a close.

Episode #116: What’s the verdict on aging Council bottles?

(NSFW)

This episode is all about Council Brewing!  Just not what you think it is, it’s all about their beers.  Mainly, the beers that Beagle and myself have been saving since 2014.  Some of the beers are new and some are years old, how do they fair?  We are joined by Jeffrey Crane from Council who gives us a ton of insight on the beers we drink during the show, he had a hand in making all of these beers.  We are also joined by Hansen Hunt, who like us, is a craft beer evangelist that is not in the industry but knows everyone in it.

Side Topic

Recently there were social media reports of a brewpub (not in San Diego) that had a keg from an SD brewery on tap that may have had Diacetyl. What do you do in that situation?

  • As a brewery, do you take back the keg?
  • As the brewpub, do you sell the beer, claim ignorance?
  • As a consumer, what are our expectations?  Do you send it back?

Beers we drank on the show!

  • Starter beers – Hop Chunks from Benchmark Brewing and Sharks with Blazers from Home Brewing Co. and 32 North Brewing.
  • 2014 Nicene – Belgian Farmhouse Style Saison aged in Gewurztraminer wine barrels
  • 2015 Nicene – Belgian Farmhouse Style Saison aged in Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay wine barrels

  • 1st Anniversary House White – Imperial Sour White Ale aged in oak barrels
  • 1st Anniversary House Red – Imperial Sour Red Ale aged in oak barrels
  • 2015 Vienne – Biere de Mars aged in oak barrels
  • Staircase of Everlasting Peaches – Golden Sour base with stone fruits age in oak barrels – To be released in July
  • During the break and to reset our palates – Resident Tempered Ego – NE style IPA with Motueka, Galaxy and Citra hops.

Episode #115: Sanctum Ale House, Chula Vista Brewery, & Thr3e Punk Ales

(NSFW)

We travel down to Chula Vista and are joined by a trifecta of craft beer.  We originally booked this show to focus on Sanctum Ale House and their owners Dino Ortiz and Mando Medina.  Mando wanted to pump up the show and was able to get Russell Clements from Chula Vista Brewery and Steve Garcia from Thr3e Punk Ales Brewing Co.

Interview

While we start where we normally do on the show, we quickly move onto the SDSU Business of Craft Beer program that both Mando and Beagle have completed.  One of the classes is off flavors and Mando explains how he can take that knowledge and run his craft beer bar the proper way.  The conversation flows into talking about Chula Vista and how the area is growing.  Then I wonder how the two breweries on this show will be distributing their beers.  After some talk about growing up in South Bay, we wonder if Chula Vista helped the breweries and Sanctum start their businesses easier to help grow the industry.

After a short break to get some food, we come back and ask when will Sanctum be opening its kitchen.  We wanted to know what everyone is seeing as the trends in craft beer in South Bay, the answer may surprise you.  We open a few beers and talk about if the places are dogs and/or kids friendly.  We then move onto the news.

In The News!

  • Little Miss Brewing opens Normal Heights tasting room! 3514 Adams Avenue
  • Lightning Brewery has sold its assets to Cismontane Brewing, Cismontane is selling some of the equipment to whoever wants it.  Lightning will continue at the tasting room location as a 3-4 barrel facility brewing the most popular beers.
  • ZX Ventures (AB-InBev) has bought a minority stake of RateBeer.com
    • Dogfish Head, Mother Earth, Karl Strauss, Six Point, Harpoon, Black Project Ale, Prison City, and Cantillon all asked to be removed from Rate Beer.
    • Noble Ale Works changed their name and all their beer descriptions on the site as well.

Episode #114: It’s Bottle Share Time!

(NSFW)

We decided to have another bottle share at The Brew Project.  This show is shorter than most as we wanted to hang out with the fans of the show a little more than usual.  We drink beers that we brought, beers from fans, and beers brought to the bottle share.  Enjoy!
