This week are at San Diego’s newest brewery, Burgeon Beer Company. At least they will be the newest for about a week or two, this is San Diego after all. This brewery has only been in soft opening for over a week as you listen to this. The build-out and the tasting room looks amazing, the guys did a great job. Oh speaking of those guys, we interview the entire crew, the Head Brewer & Co-Founder Anthony Tallman, the President & Co-Founder Matthew Zirpolo, and the Director of Operations & Co-Founder Derek van Leeuwen.
First thing is that we are very surprised to see how the tasting room came out. To be honest, we thought we were walking into yet another “hole in the wall” industrial garage type brewery. This is not anywhere near that, but it did them three years to open up. We learn some of the troubles they had opening up their brewery which seems to be a lot of many breweries face. Landlords that don’t want you to change their offices, business plans that span 400 pages, many meetings with investors which don’t always go your way, but eventually it all works out. We do get more into their brewery history, Anthony talks about his homebrewing history with Derek and how they went from QUAFF to professional. Anthony did start his professional experience with a few well-known places in San Diego, Rough Draft, and Backstreet Brewery.
After a break, we get back and it was time to get to know Matt a little more. How did he go from copy machine salesperson to president of a brewery? That leads into what Derek is there for and how he is the guy they do everything. Brian then goes into the six beers they have on tap during their opening week. Those are:
- Common Cream Ale
- Sapling Rye Amber Ale
- Burl Brown Ale
- Lot 19 Pale Ale
- Thuja IPA
- Moo Moo Farm Stout (also on Nitro)
After another break, we get into our topics and voicemails!
Kristen Mendes (mrs_itsthejor): What is their specialty? How many beers do they plan to have on tap? Favorite hops to use?
Johnny V (cookiethree): Does the head brewer still homebrew?
