Episode #88: Border X Brewing

Going back to our roots as a podcast, we head over to Border X Brewing in Barrio Logan for an interview.  This brewery, like many in San Diego, has had a past full of excitement, “meh” reviews, moving around, and learning.  We talk to Martin Favela, the co-owner and one of the original brewers.  Today he handles more of the owning and less of the brewing, more on that in a little bit.

Interview

Both Brian and I are quite surprised with the tasting room we walk into.  You can tell it was built keeping the culture of South Bay and Barrio Logan in mind.  Starting out with the interview we talk about how the business has changed since Day 1 for Martin and the business.  Part of that was that the original location was down in San Ysidro (Otay Mesa) and now they are in Barrio Logan.  We go into why they moved and how they ended up with a brewery and two tasting rooms for a short time period.  While talking about brewing their beers, we go off on a tangent about blending beers and if blending is used for the good of the beer or to hide problems.  We do get back to Martin and ask him more about the bars they brew at Border X.  That goes into a little bit about their most popular her and their distribution methods.

After a short break we come back and have a little unofficial talk about Brian possibly brewing beers with George Thornton from the Homebrewer, all would be single malt variants.  We make fun of the fact that San Diego doesn’t follow the brewing rules when it comes to recipes and how this is directly affecting competitions like GABF.  After officially coming back on air we get back to some questions about the brewery and where they get their hops.  We then go into our other segments.
