Ready for controversy? Well okay, it’s not really controversy as it is a lot of misinformation. We delve right into the misinformation and get the “tough questions” out of the way early. We ate joined by Mauricio Lima, the general manager and assistant brewer, and Gustavo Alvarado, the sales director, event director, and jack of all trades.
NOVO Brazil, at the very beginning, had a connection to Brazil originally with Cervejaria Wäls. That was before the buyout from AmBev (now owned by AB InBev) and Wäls is now run by AmBev’s premium division headed by Cervejaria Bohemia. Miguel Carneiro who was a partner of Wäls until the sell out and then decided to continue with the Chula Vista project by himself. There is no connection between NOVO Brazil and AB InBev today. Okay, enough of that, we move on and ask more about the Brazilian flavors that NOVO uses in their beers. That prompts us to wonder why we aren’t drinking said beer.
After a short break we get some of the Maracuja Passion Fruit IPA and find out that it is a tasty fruited IPA. We ask more about how the recipes come about at NOVO. They explain that Miguel does everything at the brewery and on top of that he can jot down a recipe on a napkin and tell his assistant brewers to brew it. There is a short interruption while their CFO goes up and grabs us some bombers of beer and almost kills himself. We change the discussion over to their brewing capacity and how they really are not in many areas of San Diego. That leads to them saying they have reorganized the business and really have started over about 3-4 months ago. Part of that is that Miguel is not in San Diego all the time due to family obligations and a few lingering obligations with Wäls. Going back to why they are in Chula Vista (Eastlake) we start talking about if they are members of the South Bay Craft Beer Business Guild and if they use #southbayuprising.
Another break and we come back to talk about their accolades and awards. One of those was Corvo Negro and Cookie Muncher which Mauricio is nice enough to get us a bottle of Cookie. While he is gone we talk more about another beer, Chula Pils, their hoppy pilsner. We don’t want to be too fan boy so we get back to some more questions going back to some negative reviews and how they have changed or not changed because if it. Gustavo then lets us know some exclusive news that they are going to be doing the “Boys are Back in Town” collab where they find people who grew up in South Bay and left and bring them back to do a collaboration with.
After the news and voicemail Gustavo gives us another exclusive that NOVO will have two new tasting rooms and a public market concept in National City. No dates just yet but sometime in the near future. They are keeping all of these expansions in South Bay. They could not exactly say where they will be, but the rumor is the first tasting room will be some Punks and a certain Alehouse on an Avenue in Chula Vista.
During the next episode recorded at Maker Faire we had Travis Hudson on as a co-host. He wanted us to makes sure we added a conversation new had about Third Avenue Alehouse‘s First Anniversary. Listen to the end of the show for the info.
