Episode #79: Maker Faire San Diego

MakerFaireSanDiego

(NSFW)

We are back on track with our normal release schedule.  We are joined this episode with Cody Nelson and Lauren Michelson from the Balboa Park Cultural Partnership and who are both part of Maker Faire San Diego.

Interview

What is Maker Faire?  Cody and Lauren start in on explaining what Maker Faire is.  We get sidetracked pretty early and talk about how the GoFundMe campaign for Magnetic Brewing was shut down.  Getting back on track, the ladies talk about Maker Faire and how they are hoping to take the success of the Maker Faire San Francisco and bring it here to San Diego.  This will be the 2nd year of Maker Faire, but this is the first time brewers and breweries were invited.  Not only are people who make beer, but also those who are making things around the brewing industry.

Oh you know…..LIKE US!  SD BeerTalk is going be there recording and showing people what we do!  Brian will be on vacation, so come see Greg and possibly a special guest while we do what we do for you.  Please go buy your tickets for either Saturday, Sunday, or both days.

Talking about tickets, what you get for the tickets is entrance into many of the museums at Balboa Park:

  • San Diego Museum of Man
  • Japanese Friendship Garden
  • Natural History Museum
  • Reuben H. Fleet Science Center
  • San Diego Automotive Museum
  • San Diego Air & Space Museum
  • San Diego Hall of Champions Sports Museum
  • Museum of Photographic Arts
  • San Diego History Center
  • San Diego Model Railroad Museum
  • Two Beer Gardens

Some of the guests they are going to have are:

We take a break and come back with some talk about sending beer back at a bar.  We get back to it and ask Lauren about her history with craft beer.  That leads us into a conversation about GABF and BJCP style guidelines and how San Diego generally does not follow them.  We get into some of the cool things you will see if you attend the faire.  Beau comes and serves us some Henry McKenna bourbon which gets us talking about Cutwater Spirits.  There will be food trucks at the event.  Since there are tons of things to do and it is all over Balboa Park, there will be different food trucks at the North section vs. the south section.

Episode #78: We review the Fizzics Draft Beer System!

fizzics_sdbeertalk

(NSFW)

This episode is a first for us.  We were asked if we wanted a review unit by the people at Fizzics.  We said yes, I mean come on we aren’t stupid, but on one condition…we had to review it our way.  This is in no way some fanboy review.  We did get the unit for free, but that did not affect our review of the unit.  Thank you Philip Petracca, David McDonald, and Courtney Baldwin for the review unit!  Now that we got that out of the way, let’s start the show.

We are joined by Geoi Bachoua from Bine & Vine Bottle Shop since he is someone with tons of beer drinking experience.  Brian starts the show off with his overall opinion of the device before even using it.  It’s a good starting point so as the show goes on you can hear the difference of opinion.  Let’s move onto the beers and the news topics!

The beers we used with the Fizzics were:

In the News

  • Stone’s new CEO Dominic Engels.  Mr. Koch gets promoted to executive chairman.  Engles is from The Wonderful Company (POM Wonderful, Wonderful Pistachios)
  • Speaking of Stone, Mitch Steele is partnering with Carey Falcone and Bob Powers and has created American Beerworks.  Brewpub in Atlanta, Georgia.
  • New brewery alert! Knotty Brewing Co. will be open (soft) by the time you hear this! Located at 842 Market St, next door to the associated Knotty Barrel Gastropub, becoming the third brewery in downtown (Half Door & Resident). They will have a 5 barrel brewhouse and will focus on English, Belgian, and German styles of beers.
  • Kilowatt announces plans to build a tasting room in OB – called Kilowatt West (1875 Cable Street, Ocean Beach) Co-owner Steve Kozyk envisions it as “black-light basement meets psychedelic art gallery.”
  • Two GoFundMe campaigns and an Indiegogo:
  • First one started by Amy June for Small Bar/Karen Barnett to help with legal fees and other costs associated with the closure of their patio due to “not being permitted.”  Previous owner was the one who did not pull permits.  Could cost Small Bar tens of thousands of dollars in fines.
  • Second one allows you to own 1% of a brewery for a mere $6,000.  Morgan McCarty, owner/brewer of Magnetic Brewing is offering up to 20 people a chance to own 1% each and get a return on your investment.  Someone (anonymous) has picked up 1% of Magnetic, they are nearing their goal!
  • Kilowatt Indiegogo campaign to help the build out of the Ocean Beach tasting room.
  • AB-InBev to (possibly) buy out the Craft Beer Alliance completely.  Currently own 31.6% stake.  Included breweries are: Red Hook, Widmer, Kona, Omission, Square Mile Cider, & Resignation Brewery (KCCO).  CBA’s distribution company to gain access to ABI’s distribution channels.  CBA also allowed to use ABI’s breweries for their own brands.  Other smaller breweries could partner with CBA to gain both these distribution and brewing incentives.

Cool Fizzics news!

The Fizzics Group will be on Shark Tank on September 23rd when all six sharks will be on the show at the same time.  Watch the show on ABC at 9PM Eastern, 8PM Central.

The reason you are hearing this on Tuesday and not Monday is the Fizzics Group will be releasing version 2.0 on Kickstarter today!  Version 2 will be smaller, it will not support growlers, and it will be made out of metal instead of plastic.  Named the Fizzics Waytap, check it out now!  Check out the Kickstarter too!

Mike Maas – Burning Beard Brewing & Robert Esparza – PushPins Media

We continue our Bacon Fest interviews on Part 2 and start with Mike Maass.  We start by talking about how Burning Beard is doing only seven months in.  We are then joined by Robert Esparza from PushPins Media, the creator of Mission Valley Craft Beer & Food Festival, San Diego Bacon Fest, and New Kids, a festival with only young breweries and distilleries.  Robert talks a little about the beer and food at the festival.  Back to Mike, he talks about the beer he brought to the festival.  Since you might have missed it, many of the beers at the festival are served at Burning Beard.  Moving onto Oktoberfest and San Diego Beer Week.

Jake Collins – Intergalactic Brewing Company & Kevin Rhodes – Groundswell Brewing Co.

Next up is Jake from Intergalactic.  Jake has been on the show before, a few times.  We start the conversation talking about their Indiegogo campaign and that they now have a crawler machine.  Jake talks about their new tasting room and what has happened to the old place.  We get right into Oktoberfest and San Diego Beer Week.  Moving on to Jake talking about other breweries in San diego like New English Brewing who happened to sell them their current cold box.  “What are you drinking?” comes up again and we discuss how friendship can be made by one simple question.  We ask Jake about his favorite places so Jake talks about working up in San Marcos and that leads into a conversation about the new Urge complex that will have food, drinks, and bowling in San Marcos.

Next up we ask Jake what his favorite beers and Jake starts talking about that when Kate joined us.  We talk with Jake and Kate for a little bit about beers.  And then another surprise guest, Kevin Rhodes from Groundswell Brewing Co.  Kevin talks more about what Groundswell is up to for San Diego Beer Week.  Once Kevin leaves we are joined by yet another surprise guest,  “Kendall Bear” a.k.a. Some Random Jerk.  Brian is really good on the fly, so we ask this dude what his favorite beer bars are, he decides to give us breweries.  Trying to move the conversation forward we ask this guy if he could only have on beer, what would it be.  Now back to Jake, we let him wrap up the show with how to find Intergalactic.

Austin Copeland & Shaver (Clinton Shaver) – Hillcrest Brewing Company

We are joined by Austin and Shaver and this interview goes a little better than the one we did at the North Park Craft Beer Block. We talk about what’s been going on at Hillcrest Brewing and what’s coming up for Oktoberfest and San Diego Beer Week.  We get two guest appearances by Grillfellas BBQ.  During the show a guy cuts in line for the booth next to us so Brian calls him out.  Apparently the guy didn’t like that so much and came by to give us some girts.  Let’s just say doing a show live from a beer festival is quite unpredictable.

Carli Smith – Rock Bottom La Jolla

Next up we are joined by Carli Smith from Rock Bottom La Jolla.  Carli talks a little about their new crawler machine and how it’s not really like having a can of beer.  Moving onto her plans for Oktoberfest and her story about brewing her Imperial Oatmeal Stout.  Her assistant brewery was probably not happy with her after this batch.  We continue the talk about her putting that into barrels.  We are interrupted with a hangover cure called Magic Bullet.  Yes, it has a sex toy theme to it.  Also Derek from Abnormal stops by and serves us some of his New Money IPA.  We are then joined by George Thornton from The Homebrewer and Brian Mitchell from Pariah Brewing Company.  After some random topics we get back to Carli and her plans for Oktoberfest and SD Beer Week.  That moves onto SD Beer Week for The Homebrewer which leaves George with no ideas until Brian thinks a single malt beer might be a good idea.  A Single Malt, Only One Single Hop (SMOOSH) beer.  We then get into a little bit about Pariah Brewing and how good the homebrewing community in San Diego.
