Episode #71: Urge Gastropub

urge6th

UrgeFood

(NSFW)

Super crazy hot wings and giant size burgers!  Those are two things you’ll see if you go to the Urge RB 6th Anniversary Party July 29th-31st.  We are over at Urge Gastropub to talk about their restaurant and how they may have started the craft beer scene in Rancho Bernardo.  We interview Zak Higson, the co-owner, and Pat Cusick, the General Manager of Urge RB.  We also get to talk to Chef Chuy about the food being served at the anniversary party.

Interview

We jump around a little at the beginning since Beagle ate both the wings and burger we start the conversation with the hot wings.  They may not look like much, but the sauce they are covered in is very hot (hotter than the ones we featured at Regents Pizzeria.)  We get back to it and ask them about their tap and bottle list.  That leads into some of the beers that they collaborated on for the party and their other anniversary beers.  We move on from the anniversary talk and wonder how it is working with family.  Brian asks the question if Urge has any dedicated taps and we were surprised and humbled by the answer.  The conversation moves onto food and then if Urge is pet friendly.  That leads back into their anniversary party and where the money from their raffle is going to.  BTW, in that raffle you can win these prizes:

  • AleSmith/Urge Velvet Speedway Bottle No. 1
  • The Bruery Black Tuesday 2012 Release
  • Firestone Walker Parabola 2016
  • The Bruery BBA 5 Golden Rings

  • Cigar City Brewing Puppy’s Breath Porter
  • Two Urge Gastropub Gift Card – $100 (Pulled Separately)

To buy tickets either go to the anniversary party or buy them online!

After the break, we come back and talk about Urge Oceanside Gastropub and Whiskey Bar.  If that wasn’t a mouthful, Oceanside also houses Mason Ale Works, their brewery.  Being that they have a brewery, they are able to make beers they want to have on tap.  Zak is cool enough to release some new information about their San Marcos restaurant, bowling alley, and all around fun place.  If that is not enough, there’s a place in Carmel Valley that will have a barrel room, a second Brothers Provisions, and Mason Coffee Works.

Anniversary Details:

  • 6 Exclusive Anniversary Collaboration Beers:

Episode #70: When Horse Blanket Goes Bad, Sweaty Mouse…

Alex_Sam_Rob

(NSFW)

This week we talk with Alex Van Horne from Intergalactic Brewing and Sam and Rob Dufau from 2Kids Brewing about Sour Mashing.  We get into the differences with kettle souring versus mixed fermentation.  We ask Alex how it was working with Home Brewing Co. and Kilowatt Brewing on the 1st Anniversary beer for SD BeerTalk.  If you want to try it, Kilowatt is still producing it under the name S3.  We delve into Alex’s history with brewing sour beers and then go into the beers Sam and Rob have brewed recently.  That turns into a talk about procedure and some of the main sour beers on the market.  With any talk about sour beers there’s always a talk about the smells.  Somehow “Sweaty Mouse” comes into the conversation, thanks Brian for the title of this episode.  Brian asks about the most common strains of Lactobacillus, which are Buchneri, Brevis, Delbrueckii, & Plantarum to name a few of them.

We take an impromptu change of conversation while Alex goes and gets a beer so we talk about how Brian is doing in the SDSU Craft Beer Program.  I have a case of Foot-in-Mouth syndrome and ask if Abnormal is nano, that tangents the talk to who is nano (or pico) in San Diego.  We talk about cultivating strains of Lacto which brings up my second Foot-in-Mouth statement where I confuse culturing Lacto and propagating wild yeast.  Luckily a little bit of humor comes in when Brian tells a story about a friend drinking compost juice.  After a short break (pizza arrived) we come back and open up an Anderson Valley Briney Melon Gose that has a “Moose-Bear” on it.  Oh but wait, I’m wrong again, it’s really a “Bear-Deer” aka Beer.  The brewers talk a little about the possible lack of depth with some sours.  And we finish with giving props to the Milk the Funk Wiki and Website.

Episode #69: Beerfish

Beerfish

(NSFW)

We took a few weeks off while we posted the Craft Beer Block episodes for you.  Greg and Brian are back with a new restaurant called Beerfish and we’ll give you three guesses on what they sell.  We are joined by the owner of Beerfish, Abel Kaase.  It was nice to be back behind the mics, enjoy the show!

The Interview:

Abel starts talking about how he got into the craft beer business.  He started Sessions Public in 2010 after becoming friends with Jack White.  That turns into how he hires his employees and five questions he asks every person before they start the interview.  Talking about Ocean Beach, we talk about how big it is getting and go into having multiple tasting rooms versus brews pubs.  We move the conversation into why Abel decided to build Beerfish.  It then leads into where the fish comes from.  From there Brian delves into asking Abel more about the construction of Beerfish and how long it took to build.  Getting back to beer we find out that Beerfish has eight mainstay beer taps and 22 taps that rotate.

After the news we get back into it and move onto the fish part of Beerfish.  From the fish we talk about the ambiance of the restaurant.  We finish up the conversation with where people can find Beerfish and have a side conversation about beer lists and how to display them.  One thing we forgot to talk about in the news was that What’s on Draft successfully funded their KickStarter.  Also Intergalactic got around 70% of their goal from Indiegogo.  Oh and one last thing, go vote for the Sore Eye Cup!  Voting ends on July 17th.

Episode #68: North Park Craft Beer Block, Part 2

SDBT_WC_June2016_cropped

(NSFW)

Just over a month ago Greg and Tom (from What’s on Draft) went to the Craft Beer Block inside the SDCCU Festival of Arts in North Park.  The festival promotes the arts while raising money for North Park Main Street, the non-profit organization committed to the revitalization of the North Park Business Improvement District.  Festivals are also so great because we have a ton of brewing talent to choose from and we some great interviews.  In total there was around three hours of interviews so we broke it all up into two shows.  Enjoy Part 2!

The Interviews:

Winslow Sawyer – Pure Project Brewing  (website)

We get an update about Pure Project and the Brewery Ignitor program which now includes Amplified Ale Works in Miramar.  We talk a little bit about bottle releases and how Pure’s release was done al little different than normal.  This goes into a conversation about can and bottles and putting dates on them and Winslow’s fear of shelf turds.  We finish off the interview with the $20 Challenge from Perfect Pour.

Marc Truex and Brian Hutchins – Belching Beaver Brewery (website)

After a little bit of joking around (see Old Gregg & Old Gregg Part 2) we ask the guys what’s gong on at “The Beav.”  They have been busy as a beaver, a new restaurant in Vista and a new production facility in Oceanside.  But even more they are opening a tasting room in Ocean Beach.  We talk a little but about the OB beer scene and the North Park beer scene before “The Beav” showed up.  Finally we ended with the $20 Challenge.

Mike Beebe – Mike Hess Brewing  (website) and Greg Hoover – Fall Brewing (website)

We talk about their gold and getting to their Millionth can to come off the canning line.  We are also joined by Greg from Fall Brewing.  We get updates about both breweries.  We delve into the Solis “one off” West Coast IPA from Mike Hess and how it’s a great idea to number them and change up the ingredients.  Then we go off on talking about North Park.

Kelsey (Ball) Eck – Council Brewing Co.  (website)

Kelsey comes on and talks little about what’s going on with Council since Liz and Curtis came on.  We talk a little about their anniversary parry and anniversary beer (which has now past.)  Kelsey moves on to talk about some collaboration beers and the many different spaces they use around their Kearny Mesa location, like their “Magic Factory” where their Beatitude series is made.  Tom asks Kelsey about her favorite brewery in San Diego.  Kelsey moves onto talking more about their “Magic Factory” and some of their sour and barrel-aged beers.  Continuing the beer talk, Kelsey talks about what makes a great selling beer and how they let their employees brew a batch.  We finalize the interview with the $20 Challenge.
