Episode #68: North Park Craft Beer Block, Part 1

SDBT_WC_June2016_cropped

You’ll hear Mike Beebe on Part 2.

(NSFW)

Just over a month ago Greg and Tom (from What’s on Draft) went to the Craft Beer Block inside the SDCCU Festival of Arts in North Park.  The festival promotes the arts while raising money for North Park Main Street, the non-profit organization committed to the revitalization of the North Park Business Improvement District.  Festivals are also so great because we have a ton of brewing talent to choose from and we some great interviews.  In total there was around three hours of interviews so we broke it all up into two shows.  Enjoy Part 1!

The Interviews:

Carli Smith – Rock Bottom La Jolla (website)

Carli is always great to talk to.  We get an update on what’s going on in the brewery since we talked at the Mission Valley Craft Beer & Food Festival.  We give Ben some crap for taking a vacation and leaving Carli all alone at the brewery.  Don’t worry, she’s got a plan to get him back.  We also ask Carli about the $20 beer challenge.  We are joined by Marty Rockwell from Rock 105.3/iHeartRadio for a quick minute.  He chooses to talk about Bud changing its name to America, so we spend a little bit of time on that subject.  We end the conversation with Tom talking about Sleepaway Brew Co.  Can you get a brewhouse on a surfboard?

Aleks Kostka – Culture Brewing (website) & Tom’s Roommate Jeff

Tom starts the conversation with asking Aleks about the barrels they have down at Culture in Ocean Beach.  We sidetrack off to a conversation about karaoke.  And then back to barrels and a conversation about Gluten-reduced beers and using Clarity Ferm/Brewer’s Clarex.  After a quick tease about a third location, Culture is also selling some wine barrels.  This was a month ago, so call them and see if any are still available.  Finally we give Aleks the $20 challenge.

Austin Copeland & Shaver (Clinton Shaver) – Hillcrest Brewing Company  (website)

Seeing how Tom forced them to come on the show, this interview is quite a crazy one.  It’s a couple minutes before we really get to a valid question.  Austin starts talking about some collaboration beers with various breweries around town.  That turns into a conversation on distribution on their beers and how the Hillcrest community has come to love craft beer.  As I said this interview is crazy so we go off on a security guard and hipster tangent.  I try to reel it back and ask Shaver how he got his name.  We start talking about weird yeast beers and this then goes off onto a strange tangent.  Kelsey from North Park Brewing makes an appearance and then it’s more tangents.  Eventually we do ask them about their $20 challenge.  That seems to have broken the tangent train and the brewers on the panel start talking about the Brewers Guild and wet hopping.

In The News!

North Park Beer Co. is open!  Check them out at 3038 University Avenue on the corner of Ohio Street.  Congrats Kelsey!

Episode #67: #SDBeer Writers, Part Deux!

Episode67

(NSFW)

We didn’t get to all the topics we wanted to last time so we invited Beth Demmon and Andrew Dyer back from San Diego CityBeat.  But wait, there’s more!  We are also joined by Ian Cheesman from the West Coaster (also used to work at CityBeat.)  Ian writes the monthly “Beer in the Headlights” section in the magazine.

The Interview:

Since we had Beth and Andrew on before, we start with Ian and Beth asks more about what he does at West Coaster.  Ian talks a little bit about his article about La Mesa breweries.  That leads into Ian talking about how different it is writing for West Coaster versus CityBeat.  After some more various discussions we get back on track and we ask the writers about what is the biggest challenge for the San Diego brewing community.  Somehow we go into a conversation about Bine & Vine and how they moved from South Bay to Normal Heights.  We get back to the troll conversation with Ian since he was not on last week’s show.  After some other troll talk, we move onto Ian talking about his most favorite article, “Adam Carolla’s New Craft Beer Is Basically a ‘Beer-Flavored’ IPA”.  Ian also talks about his most popular article.  After the break, we come in on the conversation about how people can become a beer writer in San Diego.  Then we get into the news… Oh wait, there’s a surprise guest!  Derek Gallanosa from Abnormal Beer Company happens to stop by the Brew Project.

In the News!

“Brewery start-ups: A real conversation about costs, wages, and growth.”  That panel did a very good job of explaining some of the business aspects of owning or working at a brewery.  You should see the video or hear the audio soon from the SDSU: Professional Certificate in the Business of Craft Beer or you can read the article in this week’s City Beat magazine.

Mitch Steele is leaving Stone on June 30th.  Article from the West Coaster.

Episode #66: #SDBeer CityBeat Writers

SDBeer_Writers

(NSFW)

We have a few opinionated guests on this week’s show.  To tell you the truth, opinion is their job, so that’s a good thing.  We have Beth Demmon and Andrew Dyer from San Diego CityBeat.

The Interview:

We start the conversation with the usual question on how they got into craft beer.  From there we ask what was their first article published.  For Andrew it was, “Novo Brazil: South Bay rising” and for Beth it was, “Go coconuts over new Monsters’ Park.”  Since you can’t be a published writer without being employed by a publication (not including bloggers), we wonder what it took to get hired by CityBeat.  We ask the BIG question, “What is your most popular (or most hated) article?”  Beth goes first and not surprising it is her, “Nix the over-hyped cult releases” article, aka “Fuck Pliny!”  Andrew’s is a little less controversial but still very popular, “A beer backwater no longer.”  As the conversation moves on, we ask ourselves, “Are we journalists?”  Somehow that turns into talking about the Modern Time pricing screwup.

We take a break and come back with a common beer problem, the gushing bottle.  That allows Beth and Andrew to take the show over for a little bit and talk about Internet trolls.  That leads us to talk more about Alpine and Green Flash.  That naturally leads into talks about buyout beer and the #IndieBeer hashtag.  We have to stop the conversation and get to our other segments.  More of these conversations will be coming up in another show.
