We are joined by Sheldon Kaplan and Kevin Tostado from SUDS County 2, The Boil Over. Sheldon is the Creator, Producer, and Director of both SUDS County 2 and the first film they did, SUDS County, USA. Kevin is also a Producer of SUDS County 2 and SUDS County. Oh ya, we have a drink off with three version of Xocoveza and our friend ChewYourBeer’s homebrew of Chocotaso.
We ask about the first film, SUDS County, USA, created in 2012, and why Sheldon decided to create an independent film about San Diego’s beer scene. Sheldon saw what was on the horizon when Ballast Point won Small Brewery Award in 2010. This easily moves into a conversation about how San Diego’s beer culture is influencing what brewers around the world are brewing. We talk about the Reinheitsgebot and if it still relevant 500 years later. That moves the conversation into fruited beers and scaling a fruited beer to mass production. We mention the homebrew club QUAFF and the number of breweries opened by members of QUAFF.
We come back from a break and talk about Rock Bottom and Gordon Biersch and how they are not Indie Beer. We open up the second version of Xocoveza and Sheldon talks about pairing beers. We get back into the documentaries and how the financial structure is different going from SUDS County 1 and The Boil Over. For The Boil Over they are doing a Kickstarter for it. There are plenty of really cool rewards you can obtain. Sheldon explains more about what The Boil Over is going to be about.
