One of the newest breweries in San Diego is Bitter Brothers Brewing and we are glad to interview them. We are joined in this show by Bill Warnke, co-founder and President, and the Head Brewer John Hunter (not Josh as was said a few times.)
We get the history of the name of the brewery from Bill. The term Bitter has a duel meaning which you will hear about. We then dive into the technical specs of the brewery and found out how they built out the brewery. Opening a brewery today requires to make sure you can brew as much beer as possible to keep up with demand and grow at the same time. The talk about the brewing system of Bitter Brothers moved into talking about John’s history. He started homebrewing at 14 and started his professional career at 21 (or 22). John has worked for Karl Strauss, White Labs, 32 North, and has consulted in the industry as well. John is the brewer who created such beers as Peanut Butter Cup Porter from Karl Strauss and Landfall from 32 North.
We talk to Bill about his culinary background and how his time spent at Lightning Brewery helped him find beers that pair well with food. Lightning is not the only influence for Bitter Brothers, the “big brother” brewery for Bitter Brothers is Societe Brewing. We delve more into the location of the brewery and why they chose Morena Blvd and Bay Ho.
