Episode #52: Mission Valley Craft Beer & Food Festival

MVCBF6th(NSFW)

We are joined by some SD BeerTalk friends, Gus Thompson and Robert Esparza from PushPins Media which organizes the Mission Valley Craft Beer & Food Festival and Bacon Fest as well as other events.  The festival is being held at the old Chargers practice field at Qualcomm Stadium on Saturday, March 26, 2016.  VIP starts at 12PM and General Admission starts at 1:30PM.

The Interview:

Robert and Gus discuss more about the festival and why it is the one you should go to this year.  It’s simple things like including not only unlimited beers, but unlimited spirits, food, and water.  To help save the environment the water is not in bottles, but a big truck and is self serve to help save on the plastic.  Also all the plates and cutlery is recyclable as well.  This festival has two admission prices, $50 for general and $80 for VIP which gets you am extra hour and a half.  This festival is not a “bro fest” like some of the other national festivals that have popped up in town.  And to pimp out the festival even more they are going to donate “five figures” to It’s All About the Kids, a charity that helps kids get real-life skills.

After the break, we come back to a new hashtag #BeerIsTheNewBacon.  We go on to talk about situational beers and how it was growing up with mostly domestic beers.  But out of that we talk about PBR and how Karl Strauss was the person who put PBR on the map with his recipe before helping to start the Karl Strauss brewery.  When we officially come back we ask about getting feedback from festival goers and if anything has changed.  We continue to discuss how they choose the music and restaurants that participate in the festival.  We side track our conversation and talk about Derek at Abnormal Beer Co. and the Cork and Craft restaurant.

In the News!

Cosimo from Monkey Paw is doing a “Calls for Conversation”  open forum about the recent buyouts.  He posted on SD Beer Friends his experience with talking with Garrett Wales (Co-Founder/Owner 10 Barrel) and Greg Peters (Barrel Program Manager, Saint Archer).  More on this from the West Coaster.

Episode #51: What’s On Draft?

WhatsOnDraft

(NSFW)

Our next episode is a very cool one!  We interview the guys from What’s On Draft?  On the show is Tom, Aaron, and Addison.  Some of you might remember Addison from our Liberty Call episode.  All of these fellows also work at Acoustic Ales Brewing Experiment.  Oh and the entire show was recorded on video as well, check out the video above!

The Interview:

We start talking about What’s on Draft and where it came from.  The start of this was a show called Crafty.  What’s on Draft? is a web series of short videos which will vary from some funny videos and some videos about tasting beers at various breweries around town.  Some of their funny shows that are already out are:  Wet Hopped American Lager and SUDS Training: Beer Week.

After a “short break” (which was the #IndieBeer short you heard a few weeks ago) we start talking about some of the beers that Acoustic Ales make.  We then delve into some of the shows they produced.  As we talked about in the Liberty Call episode, Addison did drink around two pints of yeast.  DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!  Back to What’s on Draft we talk about their first show debuting this week where a brewer gets lost in the cold box looking for hops.  To do all of this they wanted to make sure they did not make fun of actual breweries and created Sleepaway Brewing Co., a brewery that is SO San Diego.

We then flip the show and Tom starts asking us questions about creating a show.  We delve into our experience and give some tips for creating a show and how to be honest to your listeners/followers/viewers.  We also think including your fans in the show can help boost its appeal and create a new level of passion from the fans.  We then talk about the launch event and sneak peak of their upcoming shows which will be at Culture Brewing in Ocean Beach on February 27, 2016.  You can check out more details on our meetup page.

Episode #50: Cosimo from Monkey Paw & South Park Brewing

MP_SP

Cosimo

(NSFW)

Episode 50 is out!  We can not believe that we are at 50 already, it seems like we just finished recording our show with Hess back on Episode 1.  Thank you to everyone who has listened to the show!   In this episode we have Cosimo Sorrentino, the hard brewer of Monkey Paw Brewing AND South Park Brewing.  It’s not everyday you see someone brewing beers for two breweries.

The Interview:

Like most shows, we start at the beginning and ask Cosimo where it all began.  He talks about homebrewing, meeting Scot Blair (the founder of Monkey Paw, South Park, Hamiltons, and Small Bar) and getting his job as head brewer of these two breweries.  We shortly discuss something about a monkey suit and then dive into why you might not find the beers you like overtime you visit Monkey Paw.  We move into talking about 2nd Saturday and what that is.

After a beer break Cosimo continues to talk about his process with brewing the beers you find at Monkey Paw.  Collaborations have also been a big part to Cosimo’s philosophy and success.  Every now and then Monkey Paw does a homebrew competition, so keep a lookout for that.  What about fruit beers and coffee beers?  Then the elephant in the room gets talked about, the 10 Barrel brewpub opening up nearby.  You might be surprised what Cosimo thinks of this and what his main issue with it really is.  And what the heck is #IndieGuilt?

Episode #49: Pariah Brewing & Going from Homebrew to Pro

PariahBrewing

(NSFW)

We are joined this week by our friend and new brewery owner Brian Mitchell.  Brian Mitchell will be opening Pariah Brewing this Fall and be one of the first breweries to open up at the new Brewery Ignitor building in North Park.  Since the brewery is in its early stages of opening up and many details are not available, we decided to ask for Brian’s help and do a show about homebrewing and going from homebrewing to professional brewing.

The Interview:

As we should, we start at the beginning and talk about things a person who has not homebrewed should purchase and what kind of cost they should be looking at.  While this is a fun hobby for many, with the correct attitude and proper care of their equipment, we find it can be very rewarding.  We delve into the differences between kegging your homebrew versus bottling it.  That leads us to talk about carbonation in both types of containers.  Brian opens up a bottle of this Wild Ale that he will sell at Pariah.  We move onto making sure your equipment is clean and some ways professionals and homebrewers keep their items clean and sterile.

After the break we do a small blind tasting of Green Flash’s Tangerine Soul Style IPA and Latitude 33’s Blood Orange IPA.  We ask Brian Mitchell how to go from homebrewing to “pro” and how to scale up the batches of beer.  One thing I did not realize was when you grow as a professional brewery to a certain level, the equipment you buy may come with help from the manufacturer.  We have a side conversation about that 10 Barrel brewpub and how the public can go to the February 17th meeting by Civic San Diego to oppose (or support) the opening of this brewpub.  We also start talking about the buyouts, however after that we get back into the main topic and talk about what it takes to get a job at a brewery.  Finally we ask a listener question about creating a lager at home.

If you think we missed any questions or if you have any questions for another homebrew show, please E-mail us!

SD BeerTalk Short: We talk about #IndieBeer

NSFW

This episode is one of our San Diego BeerTalk Shorts.  We recorded an episode with What’s on Draft? and decided to record a separate segment in the middle and release that now.  The What’s on Draft? episode will be out in a few weeks to coincide with the release of their new video series.  In this short we talk about the #IndieBeer hash tag we’ve been using over the last few months.  We were interviewed about this hash tag in the San Diego Reader magazine.  Around the same time we were also interviewed about the proposed 10 Barrel brew pub that could open in San Diego near Monkey Paw.

The combination of the two articles blew up in social media and we received some positive and negative feedback.  There were assumptions made on social media and we were not ready to properly respond to the criticism.  We decided to take some time and talk more about this on the show.  While we feel this explains more about what #IndieBeer means to us, we know this conversation is not over.  We welcome further conversation about this, but please leave the personal attacks out.

Moving on to some of the other news topics.

We are joined by Tom from What’s on Draft.
