Episode #43: Liberty Call Distilling Co.



San Diego SpiritsTalk Radio is back!  This week we are interviewing Liberty Call Distilling Co.  We talk with the owner Bill Rogers, the distiller Steve Grella, and the brewer Addison Poth.


Liberty Call is a fairly new distillery so we delve into their history.  The idea of the company was thought of years earlier and after going to a Boubon festival in Kentucky, the idea grew.  We delve into why a distillery needs both a distiller and a brewer.  This leads into talking about how they make their own base spirits.  Talking a little bit about distilling, we ask the question of how someone goes blind or kills themselves while distilling.  We ask how they make their Gin and talk about things like Heads, Tails, Ethanol, and Dunder.

We get into the new law that will go into effect on January 1, 2016.  It’s called the CA Craft Distillers Act of 2015 or AB 1295.  We talk about the limits a distillery has right now in California and how it will change after January 1st.  However it does mean they need another permit.  It’s quite amazing how limited they are right now and how hard it is to make money.

After the break and talk about their Spiced Rum and how home-made caramel is involved.  Their spiced rum is so much better than the mass-produced stuff that is out there.  We then move into their Whiskey.  They talk about how they take wort, just like the normal brewers wort, and then make it into whiskey.

Finally we talk about What’s On Draft TV where Addison and Acoustic Ales are involved with.  What’s On Draft has done two short videos, Wet Hopped American Lager and SUDS Training: Beer Week.  They are slightly campy, but funny videos about what goes on behind the scenes of breweries.  Something happens to Addison in WHAL you might not believe.
