SD BeerTalk Short: In the News!

Map-of-AB-InBev-Acquisitions

In the News:

AB-InBev buys more breweries.  In the last week AB-InBev has purchased: (Each link to a story)

Four Peaks Brewing (Tempe, AZ)

Camden Town Brewery (London, England)

Breckenridge Brewing (Littleton, CO)

But here is where this gets even more interesting.  AB-InBev reportedly is giving incentives and bonuses to distribution partners for carrying 98% AB-InBev products in their portfolio.  The Wall Street Journal (article for paid subscribers) has reported this information about the possible program that could pay out $150 million to distributors for mainly carrying their products.  This has pushed one #IndieBeer brand, Deschutes from Grey Eagle Distributing out of St. Louis, MO.  Free tail Brewing out of San Antonio, TX has a good article about the overall picture.

Another big brand, Constellation Brands was featured on Jim Cramer’s money show.  The CEO Rob Sands was interviewed by Cramer.  Sands can’t even name the IPA that sitting on the shelf behind him. I made a mistake, Sands did mention the name Sculpin.  Thanks William for the correction.  Plus Cramer is basically throwing him softball questions the entire time.  If you want to see the video, here you go.

In good news plenty of breweries are opening and/or expanding.

Episode #44: The 15 in ’15, Best of SD Beer 2015

AbnormalBeerCo

West Coaster Magazine

(NSFW)

We are joined this week with some SD BeerTalk alumni and beer friends.  Mike Shess from West Coaster and Derek Gallanosa from Abnormal Beer Co. and The Cork & Craft.

The Show:

We have our first show recorded from The Brew Project in Hillcrest.  Our main topic for this show is the West Coaster’s 15 in ’15, Best of SD Beer 2015.  We start though with talking about Derek and Abnormal Beer Co.  We just learned of their $1 Million expansion plans a few weeks ago, Derek delves into it a little more.  We also talk about Mike’s role in West Coaster and then eventually start talking about the Best 15 in ’15.  It helps that Abnormal was one of the winners.  Both guys are super knowledgable about #SDBeer and we just let them take the reins and talk while we power through this list.

West Coaster’s 15 in ‘15!

Brian and Sore Eye Suds is doing their annual Sore Eye Sudsmas at Societe Brewing.  It’s main purpose is to get donations of canned products to the food bank.  The more cans you bring, the more raffle tickets you get and the price list is AMAZING!  It will be on December 19th at 5PM.  RSVP using the FaceBook link above.

Episode #43: Liberty Call Distilling Co.

LibertyCall

(NSFW)

San Diego SpiritsTalk Radio is back!  This week we are interviewing Liberty Call Distilling Co.  We talk with the owner Bill Rogers, the distiller Steve Grella, and the brewer Addison Poth.

Interview:

Liberty Call is a fairly new distillery so we delve into their history.  The idea of the company was thought of years earlier and after going to a Boubon festival in Kentucky, the idea grew.  We delve into why a distillery needs both a distiller and a brewer.  This leads into talking about how they make their own base spirits.  Talking a little bit about distilling, we ask the question of how someone goes blind or kills themselves while distilling.  We ask how they make their Gin and talk about things like Heads, Tails, Ethanol, and Dunder.

We get into the new law that will go into effect on January 1, 2016.  It’s called the CA Craft Distillers Act of 2015 or AB 1295.  We talk about the limits a distillery has right now in California and how it will change after January 1st.  However it does mean they need another permit.  It’s quite amazing how limited they are right now and how hard it is to make money.

After the break and talk about their Spiced Rum and how home-made caramel is involved.  Their spiced rum is so much better than the mass-produced stuff that is out there.  We then move into their Whiskey.  They talk about how they take wort, just like the normal brewers wort, and then make it into whiskey.

Finally we talk about What’s On Draft TV where Addison and Acoustic Ales are involved with.  What’s On Draft has done two short videos, Wet Hopped American Lager and SUDS Training: Beer Week.  They are slightly campy, but funny videos about what goes on behind the scenes of breweries.  Something happens to Addison in WHAL you might not believe.

Stone for re-releasing Xocoveza!  A little different from last year’s version, but not by much.  Congrats to Chris Banker!

Stop posting on social media about Goose Island’s Bourbon County Brand Stout.  Drink what you want, but if you are taking a stance on not drinking Ballast Point or Saint Archer, but give Goose Island a pass for BCBS, you are a hypocrite.

Episode #42: Toolbox Brewing Co.

toolbox1

(NSFW)

We have back-to-back episodes with sour programs.  We talk with Spencer Peters and Ehren Schmidt from Toolbox Brewing Co.  We talk all about their wild ales and sour beers.

toolbox6

Interview:

We start talking with Spencer about Toolbox and how it came to be.  He explains a little about being a brewery in San Diego that focuses on sour beers.  Ehren talks about his history in brewing and his progression coming to San Diego.  It seems that somehow these two came together by some luck and perfect timing.  Ehren talks a little bit about brewing in a sour brewery and how “standard” beers are not going to be produced at Toolbox.  One of the really cool things is Toolbox banks all their own yeast and Ehren grows all of it in-house.

Ehren explains the process of making their Cirtus Gose with Key Lime and Meyer Lemon.  We then start discussing their new foeder customer built for them.

toolbox3

toolbox4

We then delve into how this type of brewing and barrel aging is “a labor of love” and how it takes longer to produce the beers that Toolbox brews.  We find out what Spencer is willing to do for $1 Billion.  Which of course turns on the conversation into the Ballast Point $1 Billion purchase.

We get into the question from one of our fans which turns into a possibility of a Toolbox expansion.  We drink up an unreleased beer called Mackinaw, a Sour Wild Ale with California White Peaches.  We finish up and talk about what’s coming up with Toolbox for their tasting room and bottles.
