Are you a beer snob or know someone who you think is a beer snob?  We go over the “How to Be a Better Beer Snob” article from Thrillist with Alex and Jake from Intergalactic Brewing and Rob from 2kids Brewing.

Interview:

After a short introduction about some current topics, we move onto Part 2 of Episode 30.  If you are wondering where Part 1 is, you can find it here:  Episode 30, Part 1.  Why was there three weeks between the shows?  There was tons of craft beer news and we did not want to wait on releasing those episodes.  Plus, come on, you like waiting!

The topics we cover on this part are:

  • Demand appropriate glassware
  • Talk frequently about your RateBeer status
  • Engage in elaborate trades
  • Keep a beer diary
  • Speak frequently about your trip to Belgium
  • Always try to make other people better

After talking about the beer snobbery, we delve into the number of breweries in Miramar (Beeramar).  If you are a new brewery, do you not open it in a place like Miramar where there is tons of competition or you do open because people can stumble between breweries.  We then delve into nano-brewing and how well Jake and Rob did compared to their first-year projections.

P.S. We are feeling pretty good at this point in the recording.  Surprisingly we are still coherent, but you can tell we are slurring our words.

Episode #32: Regents Pizzeria

I was going to release Part 2 of Episode 30 this week.  However, I will be up in Fresno this week recording with The Perfect Pour podcast so Part 2 of the beer snobbery show will fill that void next week.  Enough about that, let’s get back to our current guest, Regents Pizzeria.

Interview:

This episode is full of food and beer talk.  We start the first half of the show by talking mainly with Bill Vivian, co-owner of Regents.  We talk about the food, which not only includes pizza, but also hot wings and some really good pork belly bites.  We do start talking about their pizza, they do both Chicago- and New York-style pizzas.  I mean come on their motto is: “Eat More Pizza, Drink More Beer, Be More Happy”.  Bill talks about where they learned to make those pizzas.  Like I said, they also do hot wings.  Brian, who loves his spicy foods, takes on the for the team and does the entire lineup of Regents’ hot wings:

  • BBQ
  • Buffalo
  • Jalapeño – 8,000 Scoville units
  • Habanero – 350,000 Scoville units
  • Ghost Peppers – 1,000,000 Scoville units
  • Scorpion – 2,000,000 Scoville units

We then talk to Cary Reutter about their craft beer program.  We talk about their “Ferrari” beer system and how they keep it running to serve the best beer.  Cary talks about their “Home Tabs”.  We discuss their cask nights and their Tap That Cask nights.  Regents also have a Dr. Bill inspired bottle list.  Those bottles will be beer that is generally older and aged well.  We mention some events going on at Regents, one being Halloween costume party with Societe and events during San Diego Beer Week.

We then dive into the beers that got both Cary and Bill into craft beer.  And we almost forgot to ask Cary about whether or not they will continue to buy Saint Archer and Lagunitas beer after the buyouts.

This episode was recording during our 1st Anniversary Party at Common Theory.  We talk about one of the biggest news weeks for craft beer.  We will release part two of Episode 30 next week.  Now onto the news…

In The News:

Lagunitas sells 50% stake of the company to Heineken.  Story from The Press Democrat and the open letter from Tony Magee.

We talk about the story and how this affects their craft beer status.  We both agree with and disagree with this sale.  It’s good for the company that can now (hopefully) treat their employees with better wages and benefits.  But we dislike that now they are no longer a craft brewery by defined by the Brewers Association.  We discuss Mr. Magee’s blog post and find it very interesting that someone who would never sell out to “big beer” decided to sell out to Heineken cause “they had good laughs.”  We also give out opinions on buying Lagunitas beer in the future and its similarity of whether or not we buy Goose Island after their sale to AB-inBev.

Saint Archer sells 100% stake to Tenth and Blake, MillerCoors US craft beer division.  Story from the Union Tribune.

It’s been rumored for months, we’ve been talking about it on the show for months, are we surprised?  Short answer, NO.  We do talk about the size effect of this sale to MillerCoors and what it will do to San Diego craft beer as a brand.  We discuss how there were signs leading up to this announcement, the major one being that they switched their distribution company from Stone Distribution to Crest, a company owned by MillerCoors.

Greg Koch is stepping down as CEO of Stone Brewing to become Executive Chairman.  Story from the Union Tribune.

Wednesday the Lagunitas story came out, Thursday the Saint Archer story came out, there’s no way last week would have any more breaking news.  Well it did and it leaves Stone Brewing without a CEO (for the moment.)  Stone will be posting the requirements they are looking for and then will chose a successor to Greg.  Greg will still be around and will still be the face of Stone.  However Greg realizes that his skill set is no longer what the CEO of the 9th biggest craft brewery needs (8th is you believe Lagunitas is no longer craft) and that it would be better for Stone to find a new CEO.

We chat with Daniel Cady from Twisted Manzanita and ask him how it’s going since we last talked in Episode 11.  We come back during a conversation about good ole San Diego beers that people tend to forget about.  Then we talk about a project that Dan started that Twisted Manzanita may not know about, a sour beer.  We get Dan’s opinion on the Fat Cat “merger” with Twisted Manzanita.  We ask Dan about the new Twisted Manzanita location opening up in North Park.  Dan talks about the merger and why his opinion might differ from what you might think from a craft beer brewer.

Next we have an impromptu appearance by Brian Mitchell and he asks Brian Beagle why his Chinout Stout is so good.  They continue talking about Beagle growing his homebrewing set up.  We talk a little about the Mash Heads Homebrew Club.  Next we have on Paul McGuire from San Diego Hop Addict.  He writes a blog that reviews mainly San Diego breweries and their hops.

We thought we were done, but Steve Kozyk from Kilowatt walked in the door so we decided to interview him.  Brian Beagle had left the party so you hear my one-on-one interview with Steve.  We get an update on the brewery and talk about the collaboration beer.

Interview:

We start the conversation asking can you legally use distilled alcohol in beer.  Can really you use items soaked in distilled alcohol in your beer if you were the person soaking the items?  And you heard it here first, Bourbon bottle-aged beer!  We drink beer that tastes like Bakersfield, whatever that means?  The Sore Eye Cup awards are done for 2015 and the winner is Speedway Stout from AleSmith!  Speedway is now in the Sore Eye Cup Hall of Fame.  Then we finally go into the list of how to be a better beer snob.  In part 1 of the show we touch on nine of the fifteen topics in the article.

  • Find a local brewery that everybody loves, then shit all over it
  • Talk often and proudly about your cellar
  • Memorize every beer term possible
  • Bring good beer to every party
  • Call your bartender by name, every time
  • Instagram the shit out of your beer
  • Attend at least one beer dinner a month
  • Champion a local brewery, then turn on it unexpectedly
  • Inquire frequently about tap cleaning
