Episode 29: The Craft Beer Attorney, Candace Moon, Esq.

CBA

(NSFW)

This episode is good for anyone who might want to open a brewery or who might already own a brewery.  We talk to Candace Moon, Esq. who is also known as The Craft Beer Attorney.  We talk about her rise in the craft beer world and why it is good to make sure you have someone who can look out for your interests as a brewery owner.

Interview:

We start with talking about Candace’s rise in craft beer and where she started.  You might have heard of the person who was her first client.  We then discuss more about how Candace built her firm and how she has built many good relationships.  I then reveal that I don’t know who Bruce Springsteen is.  Well, I know who he is, but apparently I don’t know what he looks like or many of the songs he sings.  I make Brian and Candace feel old.  Once I am embarrassed by my lack of popular music, we move on to the big topic of any brewery, TRADEMARKS!  The next big issue for breweries is actually opening your doors, we talk about the possible problems that occur even before you can start making money.  If you do open your brewery, Candace talks about how to make a brewery work when you have partners and friends and family.

Brew Law 101

Then we talk about Candace and Stacy’s new book, Brew Law 101, California Edition.  It’s a great resource for anyone who wants to open a brewery.  It’s not light reading, think of it as a textbook for opening a brewery.  We then dive into some of the laws of brewing and her role in the San Diego State’s the Business of Craft Beer.  We finalize the show by again talking about the rumor of Saint Archer being bought by Coors/Miller and the fake buyout of Arizona Wilderness by Hess Brewing.

Episode #28: Bacon Fest

baconfest

(NSFW)

We hope you like bacon.  If you do then you will love this episode!  If you are vegan, we apologize in advance.  We interview Gus Thompson and Robert Esparza from San Diego Bacon Fest.  This team is also the proud organizers of the Mission Valley Craft Beer & Food Festival.

What: San Diego Bacon Fest

Where: Liberty Station – Preble Field, 2600 Cushing Road, San Diego,CA, 92106

When: September 5th, 2015

How: Buy tickets here.

Interview:

We start the episode with the usual questions of how our guests started their craft beer journey.  Gus and Robert then went into what they are calling San Diego Bacon Week!  It’s a full week of bacon events leading up to Bacon Fest.  And Bacon Fest is a great festival highlighting bacon in not only food, but also craft beer, craft spirits, and non-alcoholic drinks.  Talking about spirits, we discuss the growing number of distilleries in San Diego and how this will most likely grow down the road.  San Diego may also be the home to a big number of award winning distilleries.

Going back to craft beer, San Diego has banned beer at most beaches, we hope that is a short term law and will be reversed.  San Diego has always been a great place to sit at the beach in the sun and crack open a few for fun.   We then talk about how Bacon Fest started slow and had issues, but this team has grown and created some of the best San Diego craft beer festivals around.  They talk about what makes a good festival.  That takes us into a conversation about The Routine and how some festivals don’t give bands the correct stage to perform on.

Moving on we open up a couple bottles of year-old Sierra Nevada Flipside Red IPA.  We also talk about the Little League World Series and how San Diego’s Sweetwater Valley Little League has made it to Williamsport, VA.  And big thanks to Sycuan Casino for helping the families of the kids get to Williamsport and for the donation of water for Bacon Fest!

And finally, you’ll learn how the term “Food from a white, kidnapper’s van” comes into discussion.  Thanks Gus and Robert.

Are you ready for Bacon Fest?!?!

In The News:

  • Mike Hess NOT merging with Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co. – There was a social media post that claimed that Mike Hess Brewing was going to buy a share of Arizona Wilderness Brewing.  This hoax was to raise awareness for the Wounded Warrior Foundation.  But has this hoax hurt the entire idea of raising this money for charity.

Episode #27: Karl’s Wet, Dirty Horse Blanket from Cellar 3

(NSFW)

We have guest Chef Karl Prohaska on Episode 27 with us to help us drink some Green Flash Cellar 3 beers.  We drink all three 2015 bottle releases from Cellar 3 and tell you our thoughts.  Some were better than others.

Interview:

In this episode, our last one as proclaimed by Karl, we drink all three of the above mentioned beers along with a few other surprise beers from Green Flash.  Not only are we drinking their beer, we decided to sarcastically also berate them with “beer geek” disappointment of their brewing ways with Alpine beer.   During our drinking of the Cellar 3 beers, we give our opinions and come up with some interesting ways to describe one of the beers.  Drinking beers is not the only thing we do on this episode, we talk some news and rumors that has happened in the last week in San Diego.

Brian and I talk to Derek about Abnormal Beer Company, but also his involvement with Abnormal Wine and The Cork and Craft, the restaurant Abnormal is part of.  We talk about his time on Kings of the Craft TV show.  We also talk about the San Diego State University certificate for the Business of Craft Beer.  We change direction and talk about the SD Beer Friends FaceBook group and how hard it is when a group gets big and the diversity of the members.  Do you trade beer?  Well Derek does, so find him online and trade your non-San Diego beers.  After the break we grab a few really nice Belgian beers and start talking about the future of Abnormal Beer Co.  Derek has a few barrels of their Imperial Stout aging that might make it for their 1st anniversary.
