Episode #25: Thanks Dustin, you got us drunk, Part 2

The friendly banter continues on Part 2 of Episode 25.  We start off with talking about a previous drinking experience Brian M and myself embarked on.  It was very similar to what happened the day before our recording.  And what is up with Belgium?  Why aren’t all the breweries in one easy location?  We chat abut the Padres and Petco Park and how San Diego has the best beer in any sports stadium.  There are many non sequiturs in this part as well.  In one of those we mention how you can get a free Sore Eye Cup glass from Brian Beagle.  Listen all the way through the episode.

And finally a HUGE shout out to Dustin Hassenstab from Omaha, Nebraska for sending us some beer!  Thanks to you, we got a little drunk and because of this, the episode is split into two parts.

Episode #25: Thanks Dustin, you got us drunk, Part 1

Inception

(NSFW)

We do not have an interview this episode so we got together a friend of ours, Brian Mitchell.  In this episode we talk about a few of the news topics have come across the newswire lately.  We talk about the Fat Cat & Twisted Manzanita merger and the Duvel & Firestone Walker merger.  Then we talk about whatever comes up in our drunk minds.  We talk about how one Subway restaurant in La Jolla has been a significant place in two of our three hosts’ history.  Part of that story is a “haunted” construction site that Beagle’s company still have not been completely paid for.  We do talk about some brewing topics including San Diego’s growing sour breweries and brewing with yogurt, or at least using yogurt in some form in brewing.

And finally a HUGE shout out to Dustin Hassenstab from Omaha, Nebraska for sending us some beer!  Thanks to you, we got a little drunk and because of this, the episode is split into two parts.

Episode #24: Rock Bottom La Jolla

RockBottom

(NSFW)

In this episode we go corporate and talk to Carli Smith and Ben Webb from Rock Bottom La Jolla.  While Rock Bottom is as corporate as you can get as far as restaurants go, Carli and Ben are still very much San Diego craft brewers.

Interview:

Carli talks about what it is like working for a corporate restaurant chain and not an independent brewery.  There are benefits as well as a few small quirks, but you might be amazed how much freedom Carli gets.  Carli just took over the head brewer job from Marty Mendiola who is now opening up Second Chance Beer Company.  We chat about going to other cities and drinking their beer and how having a San Diego palate can easily skew your perception of their beer.  Talking about rating beers, we talk about Untappd and how I got blocked from posting new beers.  We talk about Pink Boots Society and about the women in brewing.  While some people only focus on the brewer being a woman, there re ways to take advantage of that and make it about the beer and not the gender.  Carli and Ben are very awesome people, we had so much fun in this episode!

Episode #23: Duck Foot Brewing Co.

DuckFootBrewingCo

(NSFW)

Quack!  Quack!  Just a bunch of drunk birds in this episode. Okay, we’re not dunk, just a little tipsy.  We interview Duck Foot Brewing Co. in episode 23.

Interview:

While Duck Foot is starting to be known as the San Diego “gluten-free” brewery, that is not exactly true.  We interview owner Matt DelVecchio, owner Brett Goldstock, and head brewer Derek Wasak.  The team explains what “gluten-reduced” beers are and why the are being brewed at Duck Foot.  We talk a little about how two guys from New York and one guy from Boston can somehow work in the same business and not kill each other.  My opinion is that now they are all living in San Diego and this city is rubbing off on them.  We ask why did they open a brewery in the crowded Beeramar area of San Diego.  Derek talks about brewing in a time where you may not be able to get hops and grains that you want as a new brewery.  And we were surprised how fast Duck Foot went from opening to distribution in such a short time.

Episode #22: QUAFF, North Park Beer Co., & NHC

QUAFFNPBC
NHC2015

(NSFW)

This episode was a fun one!  Fresh off our interview with Brian Beagle of Sore Eye Sports, our new co-host helps with this big interview.  Brian and Greg interview one of San Diego’s (and possibly the worlds) biggest and most successful homebrew clubs, QUAFF.

Interview:

We interview the current President of QUAFF, Larry Stein.  Larry is not only in charge of QUAFF but also owns two restaurants in San Diego, The Ugly Dog Pub near San Diego State and Steins Neighborhood Pub in Tierrasanta.  We talk to Larry about the history of QUAFF and some of the success the club and its Alumni have had.  You might be surprised which professional brewers in San Diego and outside San Diego were/are QUAFF members.  We also have the pleasure of talking with Kelsey McNair of QUAFF and the future North Park Beer Co.  Kelsey is an award-winning homebrewer and will soon open up NP Beer Co in 2016.  But we are not done there, we also have Loren Miraglia of QUAFF and the National Homebrewers Conference.

Events Coming Up:

This episode was recorded at The Ugly Dog Pub.
