Episode #14: Craft Beerd

CraftBeerd

(NSFW)

Episode 14 is all about artwork and more specifically craft beer artwork.  Rudy Pollorena Jr. is the creator of Craft Beerd and he is one of the the biggest and best artists in the San Diego craft beer scene.  We talk about his two years as Craft Beerd and where he came from and how he got into the craft beer scene.

Interview:

It’s Rudy’s 2nd Anniversary and we discuss his start in the industry and how he became Craft Beerd.  Not only did he celebrate his 2nd anniversary of Craft Beerd but he also got married to his lovely finance Amy in the same week.  We talk about his competition in San Diego and whether they will stick around or not.  And does competition matter when your brand is not a clothing company, but a craft beer art company.  We find out if the booths at festivals work or if online is the way to go.  Does taking a San Diego brand to other cities work?  Is the trademark dispute with Bells and Innovation Brewing something to worry about?  Is growing a beard a trend and is it going away?  And some tips and tricks about growing a beard and how to keep it looking good.

Thanks Rudy, I learned a few things about my beard!

Episode #13: West Coaster Magazine, Part 2

West Coaster Magazine

(NSFW)

San Diego craft beer is not just about the breweries.  I interview Mike Shess from the West Coaster Magazine, who with his partner Ryan Lamb, single-handedly created the first magazine focusing solely on the craft beer scene in San Diego.  This 3-hour interview has been split into two parts so save your sanity.

Interview:

Even though we talked for 3 hours, we could have kept going for another two.  Lucky for you we decided to stop.  In part 2 we talk about some of the South Bay and Tijuana breweries.  We discuss the fact there is now over $600 million of economic impact to San Diego from the brewing industry.  This brings up the common question of will the “bubble” burst?  We talk about our best new breweries and I try to get Mike to tell me his worst breweries, but I end up calling out a certain brewery with no current home.  Is San Diego the best beer city?  Some Top 10 list says Yes and some say No.  Who the fuck cares???  I review the Reader On Tap festival and talk about the upcoming beer fests, Mission Valley Craft Beer & Food Festival and CityBeat Festival of Beers.  For some reason we talk about the artwork in the room where we record.  And finally, yes finally, we talk about what excites Mike and what get’s him out of bed.  Thank you so much for listening and please take Mike up on his offer, email him and mention the show, he will give you a treat.

Interview:

Even though we talked for 3 hours, we could have kept going for another two.  Mike loves to talk beer and with the help of a few members from the San Diego Craft Brew Society, we talked about many interesting things.  We talk about the beginnings of the West Coaster and the beginnings of a few new breweries in San Diego.  The West Coaster has a list of breweries and we discuss about the 100th brewery in San Diego and why some don’t like the answer.  Mike talks about beer in media and how San Diego needs to do a better job of covering the craft.  Would the West Coaster sell out to a big magazine corporation like Conde Nast?  Best taco shop in San Diego?  And what the heck is “Dude, Where’s My Phone?”  Find out in part one of Episode 13.
